In formal contemporary Arabic, قام بـ + verbal noun presents an agent as undertaking or carrying out an event: قام الفريق بتحليل البيانات “the team analyzed the data.” The construction is productive in news, academic, and administrative prose, but it is not a general translation of English do. Its fixed pieces are finite قام, an agentive subject, and بـ before a compatible event noun.
The verb retains a trace of its lexical idea “rise, stand, undertake.” That makes agency central. The finite verb identifies who undertakes the action, while the verbal noun packages what action is performed. This is why قام بـ contrasts sharply with agent-suppressing تمّ + verbal noun.
For the broader system that includes أجرى and تمّ, see Light and Support Verbs.
The grammatical frame
قَامَ — يَقُومُ — قِيَامًا is a Form I hollow verb from ق-و-م. In its support-verb use, tense, mood, and subject agreement appear on قام, while بـ governs a genitive verbal noun. Any participant selected by that verbal noun remains inside its noun phrase.
قام الفريق بتحليل البيانات قبل نشر التقرير
qāma l-farīqu bitaḥlīli l-bayānāti qabla nashri t-taqrīr
The team analyzed the data before publishing the report. (formal)
Here تحليل is genitive after بـ, and البيانات is genitive as the second term of an iḍāfa. Semantically, however, the data are what the team analyzed. Nominalization changes the surface syntax without erasing the event's participants.
قامت الوحدة بتحديث السجلات وإرسال النسخ الجديدة
qāmati l-waḥdatu bitaḥdīthi s-sijillāti wa-ʾirsāli n-nusakhi l-jadīda(h)
The unit updated the records and sent the new copies. (formal/administrative)
The feminine subject الوحدة triggers قامت. One بـ can have scope over coordinated verbal nouns: بتحديث ... وإرسال .... Repeating بـ is possible when the writer wants to separate the actions, but it is not required in this close coordination.
Productive substitutions and lexical partnerships
The frame accepts many event nouns, especially when a writer wants to modify the procedure or present it as institutional work. That productivity has limits. An attested verbal noun must fit the intended action, and it keeps its own complement pattern.
| Head and event noun | Further complement | Natural meaning | Register note |
|---|---|---|---|
| قام بتحليل | تحليل البيانات | analyze the data | formal; حلّل is more direct |
| قام بمراجعة | مراجعة الطلبات | review the applications | administrative and academic |
| قام بتنفيذ | تنفيذ الخطة | implement the plan | common institutional pairing |
| قام بتوزيع | توزيع المساعدات على الأسر | distribute aid to families | the maṣdar itself selects على |
| قام بدور | دور الوسيط بين الطرفين | act as mediator between the parties | lexicalized nonliteral partnership |
قام المتطوعون بتوزيع المساعدات على الأسر المتضررة
qāma l-mutaṭawwiʿūna bitawzīʿi l-musāʿadāti ʿalā l-ʾusari l-mutaḍarrira(h)
The volunteers distributed aid to the affected families. (formal/news)
Because the verb precedes an overt plural subject, neutral verb-first order uses singular قام. Subject-first order carries full plural agreement:
المتطوعون قاموا بتوزيع الوجبات بعد وصول الشاحنة
al-mutaṭawwiʿūna qāmū bitawzīʿi l-wajabāti baʿda wuṣūli sh-shāḥina(h)
The volunteers distributed the meals after the truck arrived. (subject-first full agreement)
The fixed expression قام بدور is not simply “did a role.” Its idiomatic English equivalent is played a role or acted as.
قام المبعوث بدور الوسيط بين الطرفين طوال المفاوضات
qāma l-mabʿūthu bidawri l-wasīṭi bayna ṭ-ṭarafayni ṭawāla l-mufāwaḍāt
The envoy acted as mediator between the two sides throughout the negotiations. (formal; nonliteral English equivalent)
Agency, tense, and mood stay on قام
Unlike an invariant formula, قام inflects. The future is سيقوم, feminine past is قامت, and the hollow jussive after لم is يقم. The verbal noun itself has no tense.
لن تقوم الشركة بإغلاق الفرع قبل إيجاد موقع بديل
lan taqūma sh-sharikatu bi-ʾighlāqi l-farʿi qabla ʾījādi mawqiʿin badīl
The company will not close the branch before finding an alternative location. (formal; لن governs subjunctive تقوم)
لم يقم المختبر بإعادة الفحص لأن العينة كانت تالفة
lam yaqumi l-mukhtabaru bi-ʾiʿādati l-faḥṣi liʾanna l-ʿayyinata kānat tālifa(h)
The laboratory did not repeat the test because the sample was damaged. (لم + jussive يقم)
The connected vowel in يقم المختبر prevents an impossible consonant cluster in pronunciation; the written jussive remains يقم. Negation and mood thus belong to the support verb, not to the nominal event.
Support قام is not lexical قام
The same verb can mean “rise,” “stand,” “take place,” or “be based,” depending on its complements. These are separate lexical frames, not variants of قام بـ + event noun.
قام المدير من مقعده لاستقبال الضيف
qāma l-mudīru min maqʿadihi li-stiqbāli ḍ-ḍayf
The director rose from his seat to welcome the guest. (lexical قام + من)
يقوم المشروع على تعاون الجامعات الثلاث
yaqūmu l-mashrūʿu ʿalā taʿāwuni l-jāmiʿāti th-thalāth
The project is based on cooperation among the three universities. (lexical يقوم على)
Changing the preposition changes the construction. قام من describes rising from a place, قام على can mean “rest on/be based on,” and support قام بـ packages an agent's action.
When the direct verb is better
قام بـ is legitimate formal MSA. It is useful when the event noun needs an adjective—قام بمراجعة شاملة ومستقلة—or when an institutional text treats an action as a named procedure. It becomes heavy when it merely wraps a simple verb.
| Support-verb wording | Direct alternative | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| قام الفريق بمراجعة التقرير | راجع الفريق التقرير | same basic event; the direct verb is leaner |
| قام الفني بإصلاح الجهاز | أصلح الفني الجهاز | the active verb makes the action immediate |
| قام الباحث بإجراء تحليل شامل | حلل الباحث البيانات تحليلا شاملا | the noun packaging can support detailed modification |
راجع المحرر المقال وحذف الفقرة المكررة
rājaʿa l-muḥarriru l-maqāla waḥadhafa l-faqrata l-mukarrara(h)
The editor reviewed the article and deleted the repeated paragraph. (clear direct wording)
قامت اللجنة بمراجعة شاملة للسياسة قبل إصدار توصياتها
qāmati l-lajnatu bimurājaʿatin shāmilatin lis-siyāsati qabla ʾiṣdāri tawṣiyātihā
The committee conducted a comprehensive review of the policy before issuing its recommendations. (formal; the modified process is foregrounded)
A news exchange
سأل المراسل: من قام بفحص الجسر؟ أجاب الوزير: قام فريق مستقل بفحصه صباح اليوم
saʾala l-murāsilu: man qāma bifaḥṣi l-jisr? ʾajāba l-wazīru: qāma farīqun mustaqillun bifaḥṣihi ṣabāḥa l-yawm
The reporter asked, ‘Who inspected the bridge?’ The minister replied, ‘An independent team inspected it this morning.’ (formal/news)
The exchange shows why agency is the construction's strength: the question and answer both keep the investigator visible. An agentless completion formula would not answer من “who?”
Common Mistakes
Omitting بـ before the verbal noun
❌ قام الفريق تحليل النتائج
Incorrect valency—support قام requires بـ before the verbal noun.
✅ قام الفريق بتحليل النتائج خلال يومين
qāma l-farīqu bitaḥlīli n-natāʾiji khilāla yawmayn
The team analyzed the results within two days. (formal)
Translating English make a decision with قام
❌ قام المجلس بقرار جديد
Broken collocation—Arabic normally uses اتخذ قرارا, not قام بقرار.
✅ اتخذ المجلس قرارا جديدا بعد التصويت
ittakhadha l-majlisu qarāran jadīdan baʿda t-taṣwīt
The council made a new decision after the vote.
Giving lexical قام the support verb's preposition
❌ قام المدير بالمقعد عند دخول الضيفة
Incorrect frame for ‘rose from the chair’—lexical قام takes من here.
✅ قام المدير من المقعد عند دخول الضيفة
qāma l-mudīru mina l-maqʿadi ʿinda dukhūli ḍ-ḍayfa(h)
The director rose from the chair when the guest entered.
Using full plural agreement in neutral verb-first order
❌ قاموا المهندسون بإصلاح العطل
Incorrect for neutral VSO—before an overt plural subject, the verb is singular.
✅ قام المهندسون بإصلاح العطل قبل الظهر
qāma l-muhandisūna bi-ʾiṣlāḥi l-ʿuṭli qabla ẓ-ẓuhr
The engineers repaired the fault before noon.
Stacking formal shells around one event
تم القيام بتنفيذ عملية مراجعة التقرير
tamma l-qiyāmu bitanfīdhi ʿamaliyyati murājaʿati t-taqrīr
The process of reviewing the report was carried out. (grammatical but needlessly dense administrative wording)
✅ راجعت اللجنة التقرير قبل الاجتماع
rājaʿati l-lajnatu t-taqrīra qabla l-ijtimāʿ
The committee reviewed the report before the meeting. (clear formal MSA)
Key Takeaways
- Support قام بـ has an explicit agent and a بـ + verbal noun complement.
- The verbal noun retains its own objects and governed prepositions inside the noun phrase.
- Tense, mood, and agreement appear on قام; the event noun remains tenseless.
- Distinguish support قام بـ from lexical قام من “rise from” and قام على “be based on.”
- Use the construction for a named or modified procedure, and prefer a direct active verb when no extra packaging serves the message.
