Light and Support Verbs

Formal Modern Standard Arabic often packages an event as a verbal noun and supplies tense, aspect, and agreement through a supporting verb: قام الفريق بتحليل البيانات “the team conducted an analysis of the data,” أجرى الطبيب فحصًا “the doctor performed an examination,” and تمَّ توقيع العقد “the signing of the contract was completed.” These combinations are especially common in reports, administration, news, and academic prose.

They are not empty equivalents of English do or make. Each support verb has a specific complement frame and leaves traces of its lexical meaning. قام بـ presents an agent undertaking an event, أجرى conventionally collocates with procedures and organized activities, and تمّ presents an event noun as reaching completion—often while suppressing the agent.

The three core patterns

Support verbRoot, Form, principal partsComplement frameTypical register
قامق-و-م, Form I hollow: قَامَ — يَقُومُ — قِيَامًاقام بـ + verbal nounformal, administrative
أجرىج-ر-ي, Form IV final-weak: أَجْرَى — يُجْرِي — إِجْرَاءًأجرى + direct event nounneutral-formal with established collocations
تمّت-م-م, Form I geminate: تَمَّ — يَتِمُّ — تَمَامًاتمّ + event noun as grammatical subjectformal, bureaucratic; often agentless

Calling these verbs “light” does not mean they are meaningless. It means that much of the event's lexical content lies in the noun—تحليل “analysis,” فحص “examination,” توقيع “signing”—while the finite verb contributes viewpoint, tense, agreement, and a particular construal of agency or completion.

قام بـ: an agent undertakes an event

Support قام بـ requires بـ before its verbal-noun complement. The agent is the grammatical subject of قام, and the verbal noun carries its own semantic arguments.

قام الفريق بتحليل البيانات قبل كتابة التقرير

qāma l-farīqu bitaḥlīli l-bayānāti qabla kitābati t-taqrīr

The team analyzed the data before writing the report. (formal)

Here تحليلِ البياناتِ is an iḍāfa: the verbal noun is genitive after بـ, and البيانات is genitive as its dependent while functioning semantically as what was analyzed. The finite verb قام is singular because it precedes overt singular الفريق.

قامت اللجنة بمراجعة الشكاوى وإعداد رد موحد

qāmati l-lajnatu bimurājaʿati sh-shakāwā wa-ʾiʿdādi raddin muwaḥḥad

The committee reviewed the complaints and prepared a unified response. (formal/administrative)

The feminine subject اللجنة controls قامت. Two coordinated verbal nouns share the preposition's scope: بمراجعة ... وإعداد .... In less nominal prose, راجعت اللجنة الشكاوى وأعدت ردًّا is shorter and more direct.

قام remains an ordinary lexical verb outside this frame. قام المدير من مقعده means “the director rose from his seat”; no event noun after بـ is present.

قام المدير من مقعده عندما دخل الضيف

qāma l-mudīru min maqʿadihi ʿindamā dakhala ḍ-ḍayf

The director rose from his seat when the guest entered. (Lexical قام, not a light-verb construction.)

💡
If قام means “undertake/perform,” look for بـ + verbal noun. Without that frame, do not translate English do by mechanically inserting قام.

أجرى: procedures, inquiries, and organized changes

أجرى takes its event noun as a direct object. Its common collocations must be learned as phrases: أجرى فحصًا “conduct an examination,” أجرى مقابلةً “conduct an interview,” أجرى دراسةً “carry out a study,” أجرى تعديلاتٍ “make modifications,” and أجرى محادثاتٍ “hold talks.” The event noun then selects its own complement.

أجرى الطبيب فحصا شاملا للمريض قبل الجراحة

ʾajrā ṭ-ṭabību faḥṣan shāmilan lil-marīḍi qabla l-jirāḥa

The doctor performed a comprehensive examination of the patient before surgery.

الباحثان أجريا مقابلتين مع مسؤولين محليين

al-bāḥithāni ʾajrayā muqābalatayni maʿa masʾūlayni maḥalliyyayn

The two researchers conducted two interviews with local officials. (Subject-first dual agreement.)

أجرت الباحثات سلسلة من التجارب على المادة الجديدة

ʾajrati l-bāḥithātu silsilatan mina t-tajāribi ʿalā l-māddati l-jadīda

The researchers conducted a series of experiments on the new material. (Neutral VSO: feminine singular verb before an overt human feminine plural.)

The complement is not selected by أجرى alone. Arabic says مقابلة مع someone, تعديلات على a document, and دراسة حول a topic. The event noun retains enough lexical content to determine that valency.

تمّ + verbal noun: completion, not a mechanical passive

In تمَّ توقيعُ العقد, توقيع is the grammatical subject of intransitive تمّ. The construction literally presents “the signing of the contract” as completed. It often corresponds to an English passive because the agent is absent, but تمّ is not simply an invariant passive auxiliary.

تم توقيع العقد بعد مفاوضات استمرت ثلاثة أشهر

tamma tawqīʿu l-ʿaqdi baʿda mufāwaḍātin istamarrat thalāthata ʾashhur

The contract was signed after negotiations lasting three months. (formal/bureaucratic; literally, ‘the signing was completed’)

تمت مراجعة الطلبات، وسترسل الردود الأسبوع المقبل

tammat murājaʿatu ṭ-ṭalabāti, wasatursalu r-rudūdu l-ʾusbūʿa l-muqbil

The applications have been reviewed, and the replies will be sent next week. (formal/administrative)

The verb is feminine تمت because its following grammatical subject is feminine singular مراجعة, not because الطلبات is plural. الطلبات is the dependent of the verbal noun. With masculine توقيع, use تمّ.

A direct morphological passive is often leaner: وُقِّع العقد “the contract was signed,” رُوجعت الطلبات “the applications were reviewed.” The two choices are not always stylistically identical. تمّ + verbal noun foregrounds completion and belongs strongly to administrative prose; the passive simply presents the affected participant without naming the agent. The passive overview explains that voice contrast in full.

وقع الطرفان العقد صباح اليوم

waqqaʿa ṭ-ṭarafāni l-ʿaqda ṣabāḥa l-yawm

The two parties signed the contract this morning. (Direct active wording.)

This active sentence is best when the agents matter. Replacing it with تم توقيع العقد would deliberately remove them from the grammatical center.

💡
Use تمّ + verbal noun when completion or agent suppression serves the message. Do not treat it as the only way to form a passive; Arabic already has a morphological passive.

Mood and weak-stem behavior remain on the support verb

Because the support verb is finite, it—not the verbal noun—carries negation, tense, mood, and subject agreement.

لن يقوم الفريق بإصدار البيان قبل التحقق من الأرقام

lan yaqūma l-farīqu bi-ʾiṣdāri l-bayāni qabla t-taḥaqquqi mina l-ʾarqām

The team will not issue the statement before verifying the figures. (formal; لن governs subjunctive يقوم.)

لم يجر الباحثون المقابلات في الموعد المقرر

lam yujri l-bāḥithūna l-muqābalāti fī l-mawʿidi l-muqarrar

The researchers did not conduct the interviews at the scheduled time. (لم governs jussive يجر; neutral VSO.)

Form IV أجرى / يجري is final-weak. Its jussive deletes final ي, yielding written يجر and pronounced yujri before the following article. The surface form must not be regularized to indicative يجري after لم.

Choosing direct verbs over nominal packaging

Support-verb constructions are legitimate MSA, not errors. Their danger is accumulation. A sentence such as تم القيام بإجراء مراجعة nests “completion + undertaking + conducting + review” around one event. Careful prose usually chooses one finite lexical verb.

Nominal packagingMore direct alternativeStylistic effect
قام الفريق بمراجعة التقريرراجع الفريق التقريرsame agent, less bureaucratic
أجرى الباحث تحليلاً للبياناتحلّل الباحث البياناتdirect lexical event
تم عقد الاجتماععُقد الاجتماعcompact morphological passive

Use the longer version when the event noun needs modification—مراجعة شاملة ومستقلة “a comprehensive and independent review”—or when institutional style intentionally foregrounds procedure. Otherwise the direct verb is often clearer.

راجع الفريق التقرير وعدل الفقرة الأخيرة

rājaʿa l-farīqu t-taqrīra waʿaddala l-faqrata l-ʾakhīra

The team reviewed the report and revised the final paragraph. (Direct, concise wording.)

Common Mistakes

Translating every English do or make with قام

❌ قام المدير بقرار جديد

Incorrect collocation—Arabic uses اتخذ قرارا ‘made/took a decision,’ not قام بقرار.

✅ اتخذ المدير قرارا جديدا بعد الاجتماع

ittakhadha l-mudīru qarāran jadīdan baʿda l-ijtimāʿ

The director made a new decision after the meeting.

Omitting بـ after support قام

❌ قام الفريق تحليل البيانات

Incorrect valency—support قام requires بـ before the verbal noun.

✅ قام الفريق بتحليل البيانات

qāma l-farīqu bitaḥlīli l-bayānāt

The team analyzed the data. (formal)

Agreeing تمّ with the verbal noun's dependent

❌ تم مراجعة الطلبات

Incorrect agreement in the fully controlled standard pattern—feminine مراجعة is the grammatical subject, so use تمت.

✅ تمت مراجعة الطلبات صباح اليوم

tammat murājaʿatu ṭ-ṭalabāti ṣabāḥa l-yawm

The applications were reviewed this morning. (formal/administrative)

Using full plural agreement in neutral VSO

❌ أجروا الباحثون مقابلات مع السكان

Incorrect as neutral verb-first order—use singular أجرى before overt plural الباحثون.

✅ أجرى الباحثون مقابلات مع السكان

ʾajrā l-bāḥithūna muqābalātin maʿa s-sukkān

The researchers conducted interviews with residents.

Regularizing the final-weak jussive

❌ لم يجري الباحثون المقابلات

Incorrect after لم—the final-weak jussive of يجري deletes ي and is written يجر.

✅ لم يجر الباحثون المقابلات أمس

lam yujri l-bāḥithūna l-muqābalāti ʾams

The researchers did not conduct the interviews yesterday.

Stacking support verbs unnecessarily

❌ تم القيام بإجراء مراجعة للتقرير

Grammatically interpretable but needlessly bureaucratic—three layers package one review event.

✅ روجع التقرير قبل نشره

rūjiʿa t-taqrīru qabla nashrih

The report was reviewed before publication. (Concise morphological passive.)

Key Takeaways

  • قام بـ takes a prepositional verbal-noun complement and presents an agent undertaking the event.
  • أجرى directly governs established event nouns such as فحص، مقابلة، دراسة، تعديلات; each noun controls its further complements.
  • In تمّ + verbal noun, the event noun is the grammatical subject, so its gender controls agreement.
  • Support verbs carry tense, mood, and agreement; weak and geminate stem behavior remains fully active.
  • Administrative nominalization is useful when procedure, modification, or agent suppression matters, but a direct lexical verb is often clearer.
