English lets say, tell, talk, ask, and answer combine with people and content in ways that do not map word for word onto Arabic. Formal Modern Standard Arabic marks the roles more visibly: قال لـ identifies an addressee, تحدث عن a topic, سأل takes the person asked directly but marks the topic with عن, and أجاب عن identifies the question answered.
The preposition belongs to the frame. Replacing one communication verb with a near-synonym may change the object pattern even when the English translation remains similar. Learn who speaks, who receives the speech, and what the speech concerns as separate slots. The reference entry for سأل shows the full paradigm behind one of these frames.
A role-based substitution table
| Frame | Person role | Content role | Productive substitutions |
|---|---|---|---|
| قال شيئا لـشخص | addressee after لـ | direct object, quotation, or إنّ-clause | قال لي، قال للمديرة |
| تحدث مع شخص عن موضوع | partner after مع | topic after عن | عن العمل، عن الخطة |
| سأل شخصا عن موضوع | person asked as direct object | topic after عن | سألني، سأل الطبيب |
| أجاب شخصا عن سؤال | person answered as direct object | question commonly after عن | أجابني، أجاب عن الرسالة |
| أجاب بـكلمة/أنّ-clause | optional | wording of answer after بـ | بنعم، بإيجاز، بأنّ... |
Nouns after لـ، عن، مع، بـ are genitive. Direct objects are accusative when the ending is expressed. Attached pronouns preserve the same roles: قال لي “said to me,” سألني “asked me,” سأل عني “asked about me,” and أجابني “answered me.”
قال لـ: words and addressee occupy different slots
قَالَ / يَقُولُ can take words or content directly: قال الحقيقة، قال كلمة، قال ذلك. The person addressed normally follows لـ. English tell me therefore corresponds to قال لي, not to a bare person object after قال.
قالت لي الموظفة إن الطلب ناقص
qālat lī l-muwaẓẓafatu ʾinna ṭ-ṭalaba nāqiṣ
The employee told me that the application was incomplete. (Neutral formal.)
قال المدير للفريق: سنراجع الخطة صباحا
qāla l-mudīru lil-farīqi: sanurājiʿu l-khuṭṭata ṣabāḥan
The director told the team, ‘We will review the plan in the morning.’ (Formal workplace dialogue.)
Two frequent collocations with this head show different content packaging: قال الحقيقة takes “the truth” as a direct object, while قال إنّ... introduces a proposition. The addressee can be added to either with لـ.
قلت لزميلي الحقيقة قبل الاجتماع
qultu lizamīlī l-ḥaqīqata qabla l-ijtimāʿ
I told my colleague the truth before the meeting. (Neutral formal.)
تحدث مع... عن...: partner and topic
تَحَدَّثَ / يَتَحَدَّثُ is normally intransitive. Use مع for the conversational partner and عن for the topic. Either slot may be omitted when context supplies it. تحدث إلى can present speech directed toward an audience or person, but it does not turn the topic into a direct object.
تحدثت مع الطبيبة عن نتائج التحليل
taḥaddathtu maʿa ṭ-ṭabībati ʿan natāʾiji t-taḥlīl
I spoke with the doctor about the test results. (Neutral formal.)
تحدث الخبير عن الأمن الرقمي أمام الطلاب
taḥaddatha l-khabīru ʿani l-ʾamni r-raqmiyyi ʾamāma ṭ-ṭullāb
The expert spoke about digital security in front of the students. (Formal presentation.)
For a language, تحدث بالعربية presents Arabic as the medium, while تحدث عن العربية makes Arabic the topic. Transitive ناقش الخطة “discussed the plan” has another frame; replacing it with تحدث requires عن الخطة.
تحدثنا بالعربية عن إجراءات التسجيل
taḥaddathnā bil-ʿarabiyyati ʿan ʾijrāʾāti t-tasjīl
We spoke in Arabic about the registration procedures. (Medium and topic are separately marked.)
سأل: the person is direct, the topic follows عن
With سَأَلَ / يَسْأَلُ, the person questioned is normally a direct object. The topic or person being inquired about follows عن. This yields a compact role contrast: سألته “asked him,” سألت عنه “asked about him,” and سألته عنه “asked him about it/him.”
سألت موظف الاستقبال عن موعد الحافلة
saʾaltu muwaẓẓafa l-istiqbāli ʿan mawʿidi l-ḥāfila
I asked the receptionist about the bus time. (Neutral formal.)
سألتني الصحفية عن سبب التأخير
saʾalatnī ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyatu ʿan sababi t-taʾkhīr
The journalist asked me about the reason for the delay. (Formal.)
A requested action can follow in conservative formal usage as أنْ + subjunctive, with the requested person as the direct object: سألته أن ينتظر. In ordinary contemporary prose, طلب منه أن ينتظر is usually the clearer way to say “asked/requested him to wait.”
سألت المحامية موكلها أن يراجع الإفادة مرة أخرى
saʾalati l-muḥāmiyatu muwakkilahā ʾan yurājiʿa l-ʾifādata marratan ʾukhrā
The lawyer asked her client to review the statement again. (Conservative formal.)
أجاب: person, question, and wording
أَجَابَ / يُجِيبُ has three useful slots. A person answered can be a direct object. A question commonly follows عن; direct-object أجاب السؤال is also established, especially in education. The wording or form of an answer follows بـ: أجاب بنعم، أجاب بكلمة، أجاب بأنّ....
أجابني الفني عن كل سؤال بوضوح
ʾajābanī l-fanniyyu ʿan kulli suʾālin biwuḍūḥ
The technician answered every question I had clearly. (Literally, ‘answered me about every question.’)
أجابت المتحدثة عن السؤال بكلمة واحدة
ʾajābati l-mutaḥaddithatu ʿani s-suʾāli bikalimatin wāḥida
The spokesperson answered the question in one word. (Formal.)
أجاب الوزير بأن القرار سيعلن الأسبوع المقبل
ʾajāba l-wazīru biʾanna l-qarāra sayuʿlanu l-ʾusbūʿa l-muqbil
The minister replied that the decision would be announced next week. (Formal news report.)
In contemporary usage أجاب على السؤال is widespread, especially in speech and teaching. Edited formal prose often prefers عن, so أجاب عن is the dependable production frame. Do not call على impossible when recognizing real Arabic; label the register preference.
A complete exchange
سأل المراسل الوزير عن موعد الإعلان، فأجابه الوزير: سنعلن النتائج غدا
saʾala l-murāsilu l-wazīra ʿan mawʿidi l-ʾiʿlāni, faʾajābahu l-wazīru: sanuʿlinu n-natāʾija ghadan
The correspondent asked the minister when the announcement would be made, and the minister replied, ‘We will announce the results tomorrow.’ (Formal news exchange.)
Here الوزير is first the direct object of سأل, then attached ـه is the person answered by أجاب. English word order changes, but the Arabic role marking remains systematic.
Common Mistakes
Giving قال a bare person object
❌ قلت المدير إن الموعد تغير اليوم
Incorrect for ‘I told the director’—the addressee of قال normally follows لـ.
✅ قلت للمدير إن الموعد تغير اليوم
qultu lil-mudīri ʾinna l-mawʿida taghayyara l-yawm
I told the director that the time had changed today.
Treating a topic as the direct object of تحدث
❌ تحدث الفريق المشكلة طويلا
Incorrect—تحدث normally marks the topic with عن; transitive ناقش has a different frame.
✅ تحدث الفريق عن المشكلة طويلا
taḥaddatha l-farīqu ʿani l-mushkilati ṭawīlan
The team talked about the problem at length.
Adding a preposition before the person asked
❌ سألت إلى المدير عن ميزانية المشروع
Incorrect—the person asked is a direct object, not an object of إلى.
✅ سألت المدير عن ميزانية المشروع
saʾaltu l-mudīra ʿan mīzāniyyati l-mashrūʿ
I asked the director about the project's budget.
Confusing the question with the words of the answer
❌ أجاب بالسؤال بكلمة واحدة في المقابلة
Incorrect—بـ marks the wording or manner of the answer, not the question being answered.
✅ أجاب عن السؤال بكلمة واحدة فقط
ʾajāba ʿani s-suʾāli bikalimatin wāḥidatin faqaṭ
He answered the question with only one word.
Leaving a regional pattern unlabeled
حكى لي شو صار معه
ḥakā lī shū ṣār maʿuh
He told me what happened to him. (regional: Levant; informal—not neutral MSA.)
✅ قال لي ما حدث له
qāla lī mā ḥadatha lah
He told me what had happened to him. (Formal MSA.)
