Education and employment introductions in formal Modern Standard Arabic depend on more than knowing the words for “study” and “work.” درس takes the subject studied as a direct object but uses في for an institution or setting. تخرج من marks the institution or program left through graduation. عمل في locates employment in an organization or field, whereas عمل على directs effort toward a project or task.
The noun after a preposition is genitive. A direct object such as الهندسة in درست الهندسة is accusative when its ending is pronounced. Institutional names also have internal structure: جامعة القاهرة “Cairo University” and قسم الهندسة “the Department of Engineering” are iḍāfa phrases whose first noun does not take الـ. The reference entry for عمل develops its inflection and less frequent senses.
The reusable frames
| Frame | Open slot | Meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| درس + direct object | الطب، الاقتصاد، المشكلة | study a subject or examine an issue | neutral formal |
| درس في + institution/place | الجامعة، كلية الآداب، دمشق | study at/in | neutral formal |
| تخرج من + institution/program | الجامعة، كلية الطب | graduate from | neutral formal |
| عمل في + organization/field | شركة، مستشفى، التعليم | work at/in | neutral formal |
| عمل على + project/task | مشروع، تطوير نظام | work on | neutral formal |
| عمل + role / كـ + role | معلما، كمهندسة | work as | formal concise / neutral formal |
The frames separate three questions that English often compresses: what did you study, where did you study, and what organization or project did you work in or on?
درس: subject studied versus place of study
دَرَسَ / يَدْرُسُ is a regular Form I verb. A discipline, text, or issue studied is normally its direct object: درس الطب، درس التقرير، درست اللجنة الاقتراح. An educational institution or physical setting follows في. Both slots can appear together.
درست هدى الاقتصاد في جامعة بيروت العربية
darasat hudā l-iqtiṣāda fī jāmiʿati bayrūta l-ʿarabiyya
Huda studied economics at Beirut Arab University. (Formal biographical style.)
أدرس في المكتبة مساء كل ثلاثاء
ʾadrusu fī l-maktabati masāʾa kulli thulāthāʾ
I study in the library every Tuesday evening. (The subject studied is understood.)
The same verb can mean “examine, investigate” outside education. درست اللجنة المقترح means that a committee considered the proposal; it does not say the committee enrolled in a course.
درست اللجنة ثلاثة بدائل قبل اتخاذ القرار
darasati l-lajnatu thalāthata badāʾila qabla ttikhādhi l-qarār
The committee examined three alternatives before making the decision. (Formal administrative usage.)
دراسة participates in lexical collocations of its own. One يجري دراسة “conducts a study” and يعدّ دراسة “prepares a study”; mechanically using يعمل دراسة because English says do a study is not the neutral formal collocation.
تخرج من: graduation as emergence from a program
تَخَرَّجَ / يَتَخَرَّجُ is Form V and intransitive. The graduate is its subject. Neutral formal Arabic commonly uses من for the institution or faculty: تخرج من الجامعة، تخرج من كلية الطب. A year can be added with عام or سنة, and a specialization can be given with في or a separate study phrase when needed.
تخرجت مريم من كلية الطب عام 2024
takharrajat maryamu min kulliyyati ṭ-ṭibbi ʿāma ʾalfayn wa-ʾarbaʿatin wa-ʿishrīn
Maryam graduated from medical school in 2024. (Formal biographical style.)
بعد أن تخرج من الجامعة، بدأ تدريبا في أحد المصارف
baʿda ʾan takharraja mina l-jāmiʿati, badaʾa tadrīban fī ʾaḥadi l-maṣārif
After graduating from university, he began an internship at a bank. (Neutral formal.)
Do not confuse intransitive Form V تخرج الطالب “the student graduated” with transitive Form II خرّجت الجامعة الطلاب “the university graduated/trained the students.” The difference changes which participant is the subject.
خرجت الجامعة دفعة جديدة من المهندسين
kharrajati l-jāmiʿatu dufʿatan jadīdatan mina l-muhandisīn
The university graduated a new cohort of engineers. (Formal institutional report; Form II.)
عمل في: workplace or professional field
عَمِلَ / يَعْمَلُ takes في before an employer, workplace, sector, or professional field. شركة، مؤسسة، وزارة، مستشفى، جامعة are institutions; التعليم، الصحافة، الطاقة are fields. A position can be expressed by a predicative accusative or كـ.
تعمل أختي في مؤسسة دولية
taʿmalu ʾukhtī fī muʾassasatin dawliyya
My sister works at an international organization. (Neutral formal.)
عمل أبي معلما، ثم أصبح مديرا للمدرسة
ʿamila ʾabī muʿalliman, thumma ʾaṣbaḥa mudīran lil-madrasa
My father worked as a teacher and later became the school's principal. (Formal; predicative accusative.)
تعمل سلمى كمستشارة قانونية للشركة
taʿmalu salmā kamustashāratin qānūniyyatin lish-sharika
Salma works as a legal adviser to the company. (Neutral formal.)
In formal biographies, a concise role accusative such as عمل معلما is well established. كـ explicitly means “as, in the capacity of” and is productive with occupations. Neither frame identifies the employer; add في + institution for that.
عمل على: directed work on a task
Use على when effort is directed toward a project, problem, goal, or development process. The complement can be an ordinary noun or a maṣdar phrase: عمل على المشروع، عمل على تطوير التطبيق. This is different from في, which locates work in an organization or domain.
نعمل على تحديث الموقع قبل إطلاق الخدمة
naʿmalu ʿalā taḥdīthi l-mawqiʿi qabla ʾiṭlāqi l-khidma
We are working on updating the website before the service launches. (Neutral formal.)
يعمل الباحثون في المركز على مشروع للطاقة النظيفة
yaʿmalu l-bāḥithūna fī l-markazi ʿalā mashrūʿin liṭ-ṭāqati n-naẓīfa
The researchers at the center are working on a clean-energy project. (Formal; في marks setting, على marks project.)
Because the verb precedes an explicit human plural subject, يعمل is singular in the last example. If the subject comes first, use full plural agreement: الباحثون يعملون.
The verb also means “function” with a machine or system as subject. This produces a nonliteral English equivalent without any workplace: الجهاز يعمل “the device works / is operational.”
لا يعمل جهاز العرض، ولذلك سنستخدم الشاشة الأخرى
lā yaʿmalu jihāzu l-ʿarḍi, wa-lidhālika sanastakhdimu sh-shāshata l-ʾukhrā
The projector isn't working, so we will use the other screen. (Nonliteral ‘work’ = function.)
A short education-to-employment profile
درست ندى الهندسة في جامعة حكومية، وتخرجت من كلية الهندسة قبل عامين، وهي تعمل الآن في شركة بناء على مشروع إسكان جديد
darasat nadā l-handasata fī jāmiʿatin ḥukūmiyya, wa-takharrajat min kulliyyati l-handasati qabla ʿāmayn, wa-hiya taʿmalu l-ʾāna fī sharikati bināʾin ʿalā mashrūʿi ʾiskānin jadīd
Nada studied engineering at a public university, graduated from the faculty of engineering two years ago, and now works at a construction company on a new housing project. (Formal profile.)
This single profile keeps four roles apart: subject studied, institution attended, institution graduated from, and current employer/project.
Common Mistakes
Marking the academic subject with في
❌ درست في الاقتصاد في الجامعة
Incorrect for the intended neutral ‘studied economics’—the discipline is a direct object; في introduces the institution or setting.
✅ درست الاقتصاد في الجامعة الوطنية
darastu l-iqtiṣāda fī l-jāmiʿati l-waṭaniyya
I studied economics at the National University.
Copying English “graduate at” with عند
❌ تخرجت عند كلية العلوم العام الماضي
Incorrect—عند does not mark the institution graduated from; use من.
✅ تخرجت من كلية العلوم العام الماضي
takharrajtu min kulliyyati l-ʿulūmi l-ʿāma l-māḍiya
I graduated from the Faculty of Science last year.
Using the workplace preposition for a project
❌ نعمل في تطوير التطبيق الجديد
Incorrect for the intended directed task—use على before the development project.
✅ نعمل على تطوير التطبيق الجديد
naʿmalu ʿalā taṭwīri t-taṭbīqi l-jadīd
We are working on developing the new application.
Substituting عمل for an established academic collocation
عمل الباحث دراسة عن النقل العام
ʿamila l-bāḥithu dirāsatan ʿani n-naqli l-ʿāmm
The researcher did a study on public transport. (Understandable, but not the preferred formal collocation.)
✅ أجرى الباحث دراسة عن النقل العام
ʾajrā l-bāḥithu dirāsatan ʿani n-naqli l-ʿāmm
The researcher conducted a study on public transport.
Replacing clear prose with inflated bureaucracy
تم القيام بالعمل على إنجاز عملية تحديث النظام
tamma l-qiyāmu bil-ʿamali ʿalā ʾinjāzi ʿamaliyyati taḥdīthi n-niẓām
Work was undertaken on completing the system-update process. (Grammatical but bureaucratically overloaded.)
✅ يعمل فريق التقنية على تحديث النظام
yaʿmalu farīqu t-tiqniyyati ʿalā taḥdīthi n-niẓām
The technical team is updating the system. (Clear formal prose.)
