Mixing ما and لم Verb Forms

English past negation uses one conspicuous pattern: did not plus a bare lexical verb. Learners therefore look for a single Arabic equivalent of did not and freely exchange the verb forms around it. Formal contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal) instead offers two common architectures whose meanings overlap but whose morphology cannot be mixed:

  • ما + perfect: ما أرسلَ “he did not send.” The perfect stays perfect; ما does not govern mood.
  • لم + jussive imperfect: لم يرسلْ “he did not send.” لم supplies past negation and requires the jussive.

The reusable repair is not “choose another word for not.” It is “choose a whole frame, then build the verb that frame licenses.”

For the complete semantics of each construction, consult ما with the perfect and لم with the jussive; the present page is a form-selection clinic.

The two architectures

FrameVerbWhat the verb showsTypical use
ما + perfectما كَتَبَperfect stem and perfect agreement; no mooddenial of a completed, often contextually anchored event
لم + jussive imperfectلم يَكْتُبْimperfect agreement plus jussive markingvery common neutral past negation; readily combines with “yet”

The first minimal contrast describes the same failure with two legitimate structures:

ما أرسلت الشركة الفاتورة أمس.

mā ʾarsalati sh-sharikatu l-fātūrata ʾams.

The company did not send the invoice yesterday. (ما + perfect.)

لم ترسل الشركة الفاتورة أمس.

lam tursili sh-sharikatu l-fātūrata ʾams.

The company did not send the invoice yesterday. (لم + jussive imperfect.)

Both are grammatical. What is impossible is a hybrid such as لم أرسلت: the particle demands an imperfect, but the following word is a perfect. The two correct sentences need not differ in English translation.

💡
Write a slash in your notes: ما | perfect and لم | jussive imperfect. Never select the particle and the verb independently.

ما leaves the perfect unchanged

Build the affirmative perfect first, with its ordinary person, gender, number, and word-order agreement. Then place ما before it. English did has no Arabic auxiliary counterpart here.

❌ ما يراجع المحرر النسخة النهائية أمس.

Incorrect for neutral formal past negation — this combines past-time أمس with an imperfect after ما instead of the standard perfect frame.

✅ ما راجع المحرر النسخة النهائية أمس بسبب انقطاع الكهرباء.

mā rājaʿa l-muḥarriru n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata ʾams bi-sababi nqiṭāʿi l-kahrabāʾ.

The editor did not review the final version yesterday because of the power outage.

The rejected line is especially dangerous because ما + imperfect is not inherently impossible. In formal Arabic, negative ما can negate an indicative imperfect in present, general, or circumstantial readings, although لا is often the neutral modern choice; relative ما also gives ما يراجعُه المحرر “what the editor reviews.” Regional spoken varieties have additional ما + imperfect systems (regional). None of those legitimate analyses supplies the intended completed past denial with أمس here.

❌ ما تكتب الطالبة الملخص قبل الموعد.

Incorrect for ‘the student did not write’ in neutral formal MSA — use a perfect after past-negative ما.

✅ ما كتبت الطالبة الملخص قبل الموعد المحدد.

mā katabati ṭ-ṭālibatu l-mulakhkhaṣa qabla l-mawʿidi l-muḥaddad.

The student did not write the summary before the specified deadline.

❌ ما يرسلون الموظفون الرد صباحا.

Incorrect in two ways for the intended report — past-negative ما needs a perfect, and neutral verb-first order before an overt plural subject uses a singular verb.

✅ ما أرسل الموظفون الرد صباحا لأن المدير لم يوافق عليه.

mā ʾarsala l-muwaẓẓafūna r-radda ṣabāḥan li-ʾanna l-mudīra lam yuwāfiq ʿalayh.

The employees did not send the reply in the morning because the director had not approved it.

Here أرسل is singular because it precedes the overt human plural subject. ما changes neither that agreement rule nor the perfect stem.

لم requires an imperfect and marks it jussive

After لم, form the imperfect for the correct subject and then apply jussive morphology. A sound singular ends in sukūn; the five verbs delete mood nūn; a final-weak singular deletes its weak letter. The particle contributes past time, so the imperfect does not mean present merely because its prefix is present.

❌ لم وصلت الحافلة في الموعد.

Incorrect — وصلت is perfect, but لم can govern only an imperfect jussive.

✅ لم تصل الحافلة في الموعد بسبب الازدحام.

lam taṣili l-ḥāfilatu fī l-mawʿidi bi-sababi l-izdiḥām.

The bus did not arrive on time because of traffic.

Underlying تصلْ gains a linking i before the article: تصلِ الحافلة. That support vowel prevents a cluster; it does not turn the jussive back into an indicative.

❌ لم يكتب المدير الملاحظة في السجل.

lam yaktubu l-mudīru l-mulāḥaẓata fī s-sijill

Incorrect pronunciation — indicative yaktubu cannot follow لم.

✅ لم يكتب المدير الملاحظة في السجل الرسمي.

lam yaktubi l-mudīru l-mulāḥaẓata fī s-sijilli r-rasmiyy.

The director did not write the note in the official log.

❌ لم ترسلين الملف إلى القسم القانوني.

Incorrect — feminine-singular ترسلين is one of the five verbs and must lose mood nūn after لم.

✅ لم ترسلي الملف إلى القسم القانوني أمس.

lam tursilī l-milaffa ʾilā l-qismi l-qānūniyyi ʾams.

You did not send the file to the legal department yesterday. (Addressed to one woman.)

Feminine plural is a legitimate lookalike: هن لم يرسلنَ keeps ن because it is nūn al-niswa, an agreement suffix, not the deletable mood nūn of ترسلين.

Weak-final verbs make the choice visible

The second minimal contrast uses Form I دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د-ع-و, “invite; call for”:

ما دعا المنظم ممثلي الصحافة إلى الجلسة.

mā daʿā l-munaẓẓimu mumaththilī ṣ-ṣiḥāfati ʾilā l-jalsa(h).

The organizer did not invite the press representatives to the session. (Perfect after ما.)

لم يدع المنظم ممثلي الصحافة إلى الجلسة.

lam yadʿu l-munaẓẓimu mumaththilī ṣ-ṣiḥāfati ʾilā l-jalsa(h).

The organizer did not invite the press representatives to the session. (Jussive imperfect after لم.)

The perfect دعا retains final alif. The jussive imperfect يدعُ deletes final wāw in writing; its short u belongs to the stem. Mixing them yields predictable errors:

❌ ما يدع المدير الخبراء إلى الاجتماع أمس.

Incorrect for the intended completed denial — past-negative ما takes perfect دعا, not jussive-looking يدع.

✅ ما دعا المدير الخبراء إلى الاجتماع الذي عقد أمس.

mā daʿā l-mudīru l-khubarāʾa ʾilā l-ijtimāʿi lladhī ʿuqida ʾams.

The director did not invite the experts to the meeting held yesterday.

❌ لم يدعو المتحدث إلى تغيير جدول الأعمال.

Incorrect — singular jussive يدعو must delete its final wāw after لم.

✅ لم يدع المتحدث إلى تغيير جدول الأعمال خلال الجلسة.

lam yadʿu l-mutaḥaddithu ʾilā taghyīri jadwali l-ʾaʿmāli khilāla l-jalsa(h).

The speaker did not call for changing the agenda during the session.

Do not confuse singular لم يدعُ with masculine-plural هم لم يدعوا. In the plural, وا is the surviving agreement ending after mood nūn deletion; it is not an improperly retained singular weak letter.

Meaning and register: overlap without interchangeability

Both frames are standard. لم + jussive is frequent in neutral reporting and with حتى الآن “up to now.” ما + perfect often works well when directly denying a claim about a completed event. This is a discourse tendency, not a rigid translation rule.

ما غيرت الإدارة الموعد؛ بل غيرت رقم القاعة.

mā ghayyarati l-ʾidāratu l-mawʿida; bal ghayyarat raqma l-qāʿa(h).

Management did not change the time; it changed the room number. (Direct correction.)

لم تبدل اللجنة موعد الجلسة حتى الآن.

lam tubaddili l-lajnatu mawʿida l-jalsati ḥattā l-ʾān.

The committee has not changed the session time yet.

Regional varieties may use ما with an imperfect or with additional particles (regional). Those systems are internally grammatical, but mixing them unlabelled into formal MSA obscures the standard contrast.

Editing a paragraph

❌ ما يرسل الفريق التقرير أمس، ولم اتصل المدير بالمحررين، وما يدعوهم إلى اجتماع آخر.

Incorrect — the paragraph uses an imperfect after past ما, a perfect after لم, and a second imperfect after ما.

✅ ما أرسل الفريق التقرير أمس، ولم يتصل المدير بالمحررين، وما دعاهم إلى اجتماع آخر.

mā ʾarsala l-farīqu t-taqrīra ʾams, wa-lam yattaṣili l-mudīru bi-l-muḥarrirīna, wa-mā daʿāhum ʾilā jtimāʿin ʾākhar.

The team did not send the report yesterday, the director did not contact the editors, and he did not invite them to another meeting.

The first and third clauses choose ما + perfect; the middle chooses لم + jussive imperfect. Attached object ـهم remains on perfect دعاهم. The paragraph is coherent because each clause completes its own architecture.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English did not + bare verb

❌ لم كتب الباحث النتيجة في الملخص.

Incorrect — كتب is perfect, not a bare form licensed by لم.

✅ لم يكتب الباحث النتيجة في الملخص المنشور.

lam yaktubi l-bāḥithu n-natījata fī l-mulakhkhaṣi l-manshūr.

The researcher did not write the result in the published abstract.

2. Giving ما the jussive behavior of لم

❌ ما أكتب التقرير النهائي أمس.

Incorrect for ‘I did not write’ — أكتب is an imperfect; past ما requires perfect كتبت.

✅ ما كتبت التقرير النهائي حتى المساء.

mā katabtu t-taqrīra n-nihāʾiyya ḥattā l-masāʾ.

I did not write the final report until the evening.

3. Ignoring weak-letter deletion after لم

❌ لم يسعى الوسيط إلى حل النزاع.

Incorrect — jussive يسعى deletes final ى after لم.

✅ لم يسع الوسيط إلى حل النزاع قبل انتهاء المهلة.

lam yasʿa l-wasīṭu ʾilā ḥalli n-nizāʿi qabla ntihāʾi l-muhla(h).

The mediator did not seek to resolve the dispute before the deadline expired.

4. Deleting the wrong nūn

❌ الموظفات لم يرسلوا الاستبيان.

Incorrect — an all-female plural subject needs يرسلن; its agreement nūn remains.

✅ الموظفات لم يرسلن الاستبيان إلى المشاركات.

al-muwaẓẓafātu lam yursilna l-istibyāna ʾilā l-mushārikāt.

The employees did not send the questionnaire to the female participants.

Repair procedure

  1. Decide whether the clause will use ما or لم.
  2. With ما, retrieve the fully agreed perfect; do not apply mood.
  3. With لم, retrieve the imperfect for the subject, then form its jussive.
  4. Check the jussive marker: sukūn, mood-nūn deletion, or final-weak deletion.
  5. Recheck word-order agreement and attached pronouns independently.

If the English translations are identical, trust the Arabic governor rather than English tense terminology. The left-hand particle tells you which verbal paradigm to inspect.

Key Takeaways

  • ما + perfect and لم + jussive imperfect are both standard past-negation strategies.
  • Their meanings can overlap, but their verb forms cannot be interchanged.
  • Perfect verbs have no mood; لم visibly governs jussive morphology on the imperfect.
  • A form that looks wrong for past negation may be grammatical under a different analysis, especially relative ما or a regional construction; diagnose structure before correcting it.
