أنْ or أنّ?

Unvocalized Arabic writes light أنْ and heavy أنّ identically as أن, but the two forms build different complements. Light أنْ selects an imperfect verb in the subjunctive and packages an event: أرجو أن يصلَ الردّ “I hope the reply arrives.” Heavy أنّ introduces a nominal content clause and packages a proposition: أعلم أنّ الردّ سيصل “I know that the reply will arrive.”

English that and to are unreliable guides. The useful evidence is inside the Arabic clause: a subjunctive verb immediately after light أنْ, versus an accusative noun or attached pronoun belonging to heavy أنّ. The governing expression matters too, because wanting and deciding typically select an envisaged event, while knowing and demonstrating select content treated as true.

For the full construction behind each branch, compare أنْ + subjunctive clauses with أنّ content clauses. This page turns those systems into one decision procedure.

The decision algorithm

Work through these questions in order:

  1. What does the governor select? Desire, intention, attempt, permission, purpose, and recommendation commonly select an event with أنْ. Knowledge, discovery, proof, and explicit factual assessment commonly select a proposition with أنّ.
  2. What begins the embedded clause? If an imperfect verb begins it, choose أنْ and make that verb subjunctive. If a noun phrase or attached pronoun is the embedded topic, choose أنّ and put its noun in the accusative. A fronted prepositional or adverbial predicate can also follow أنّ, as in علمت أنّ في القاعة ضيفًا; in that order, find the postponed accusative noun before deciding that the clause lacks a nominal frame.
  3. Is the content bounded, ongoing, or habitual? Light أنْ always selects an imperfect, although context can locate its event later than a past or present governor. Heavy أنّ can contain a nominal predicate, a perfect event, an imperfect habit, or a future clause.
  4. What information do you want to foreground? Light أنْ foregrounds the event. Heavy أنّ first establishes an entity as the proposition's topic and then says something about it.
  5. Does the lexical frame actually license both? Some governors permit both with a change of viewpoint; others have a strong conventional preference. Learn the governor together with its complement pattern.

أرجو أن يصل الرد قبل الخميس

ʾarjū ʾan yaṣila r-raddu qabla l-khamīs

I hope the reply arrives before Thursday. (Light أنْ presents the hoped-for event.)

أعلم أن الرد سيصل قبل الخميس

ʾaʿlamu ʾanna r-radda sayaṣilu qabla l-khamīs

I know that the reply will arrive before Thursday. (Heavy أنّ embeds a proposition.)

The nouns in the second sentence form a nominal frame: الردَّ is the accusative noun of أنّ, while the verbal clause سيصل is its predicate. In the first sentence, يصلَ itself is the head of the embedded event, and الردُّ is its nominative subject.

💡
Use two observable tests together: the governor's valency and the first constituent inside the complement. Translation alone cannot distinguish the two particles.

Light أنْ: an event headed by a subjunctive verb

Light أنْ does not introduce an Arabic infinitive. It introduces a finite imperfect whose person, gender, and number identify the actor. The subjunctive appears as -a on a sound singular verb, deletion of the mood nūn in the Five Verbs, or the appropriate final-weak pattern.

يسرني أن يشارك الخبيران في الجلسة

yasurrunī ʾan yushārika l-khabīrāni fī l-jalsa(h)

I am pleased that the two experts will participate in the session. (The event begins with subjunctive يشاركَ.)

The following dual subject الخبيرانِ remains nominative. Light أنْ governs the verb's mood, not the subject's case.

قرر المجلس أن يعيد فتح المكتبة في سبتمبر

qarrara l-majlisu ʾan yuʿīda fatḥa l-maktabati fī sibṭambar

The council decided to reopen the library in September. (Formal neutral; a decision about an action.)

Past قرر does not force a past verb after it. The reopening is later than the decision, and light أنْ still selects subjunctive يعيدَ. This relative-time behavior is one reason an English tense label is a poor diagnostic.

Heavy أنّ: a proposition with its own nominal frame

Heavy أنّ belongs to the إنّ family. Its noun is accusative, while a one-word predicate is nominative. The predicate may instead be a phrase or a complete finite clause, and its verb keeps whatever aspect and mood its own environment requires.

يؤكد البرنامج أن الخبيرين مشاركان في الجلسة

yuʾakkidu l-barnāmaju ʾanna l-khabīrayni mushārikāni fī l-jalsa(h)

The program confirms that the two experts are participating in the session. (Accusative dual noun; nominative dual predicate.)

Here the dual contrast is visible: الخبيرينِ is accusative as the noun of أنّ, while مشاركانِ is nominative as its predicate. Heavy أنّ can also embed a completed event:

أظهرت البيانات أن المكتبة استقبلت زوارا أكثر هذا العام

ʾaẓharati l-bayānātu ʾanna l-maktabata staqbalat zuwwāran ʾakthara hādhā l-ʿām

The data showed that the library received more visitors this year. (Heavy أنّ contains a perfect predicate.)

The perfect استقبلت is possible because heavy أنّ embeds the whole proposition المكتبة استقبلت.... Light أنْ cannot be followed by a perfect in this construction.

Definiteness is useful evidence but not an absolute shortcut. A definite noun immediately after written أن strongly suggests heavy أنّ, yet heavy أنّ may also have an indefinite noun or a fronted phrase predicate. Conversely, the subject after light أنْ + verb may be definite or indefinite. Clause architecture outranks the presence of الـ.

When both are grammatical

Some predicates of expectation, fear, preference, and evaluation allow either construction because a speaker can construe the same situation as an envisaged event or as a proposition about a named topic.

أتوقع أن ينخفض السعر بعد إطلاق المنتج

ʾatawaqqaʿu ʾan yankhafiḍa s-siʿru baʿda ʾiṭlāqi l-muntaj

I expect the price to fall after the product launch. (Event-centered.)

أتوقع أن السعر سينخفض بعد إطلاق المنتج

ʾatawaqqaʿu ʾanna s-siʿra sayankhafiḍu baʿda ʾiṭlāqi l-muntaj

I expect that the price will fall after the product launch. (Proposition-centered; السعر is the topic.)

The first version moves directly into ينخفضَ السعرُ. The second first establishes accusative السعرَ, then predicates سينخفضُ of it. Both are formal MSA; the second is heavier because it explicitly structures the content as topic plus comment.

أخشى أن تتأخر الرحلة بسبب الضباب

ʾakhshā ʾan tataʾakhkhara r-riḥlatu bisababi ḍ-ḍabāb

I fear that the flight may be delayed because of fog. (The feared event is foregrounded.)

أخشى أن الرحلة قد تتأخر بسبب الضباب

ʾakhshā ʾanna r-riḥlata qad tataʾakhkharu bisababi ḍ-ḍabāb

I fear that the flight may be delayed because of fog. (The flight is established as the proposition's topic.)

This is a boundary case, not a free synonymy rule. With قرر “decide,” an event complement is normal; with أثبت “prove,” propositional أنّ is normal. The fact that أتوقع or أخشى can support both does not make every governor equally flexible.

💡
When both forms are licensed, light أنْ answers “what event is envisaged?”, while heavy أنّ answers “what proposition is being asserted, feared, or expected about this topic?”

A contextual decision exercise

Imagine two sentences in a committee report. The first records what the committee resolved to do; the second records what an audit established. The decision selects an event, while the audit selects factual content:

اتفقت اللجنة على أن تنشر النتائج بعد مراجعتها

ittafaqati l-lajnatu ʿalā ʾan tanshura n-natāʾija baʿda murājaʿatihā

The committee agreed to publish the results after reviewing them. (Chosen action: light أنْ.)

خلص التدقيق إلى أن النتائج تحتاج إلى مراجعة إضافية

khalaṣa t-tadqīqu ʾilā ʾanna n-natāʾija taḥtāju ʾilā murājaʿatin ʾiḍāfiyya(h)

The audit concluded that the results require additional review. (Finding: heavy أنّ.)

The preposition على governs the light event clause as a unit in the first example; إلى governs the heavy content clause in the second. A preposition by itself does not decide the particle: the lexical expression اتفق على أنْ يفعل differs from خلص إلى أنّ الأمر....

Register and style

Both constructions are normal in formal contemporary MSA. A maṣdar may replace some light أنْ clauses in compressed (formal/academic) prose, but it can hide the actor or time relation. Heavy أنّ is especially common in analytical, institutional, and news prose because it makes a proposition's topic explicit. Regional speech may use different complementizers or reduce case and mood distinctions; do not import those regional patterns into a fully inflected MSA sentence.

Common Mistakes

Building a hybrid nominal subject plus subjunctive predicate

❌ نريد أن الموظفون يبدأوا التدريب غدا

Incorrect — the intended event must begin with the subjunctive verb; الموظفون then remains its nominative subject.

✅ نريد أن يبدأ الموظفون التدريب صباح الغد

nurīdu ʾan yabdaʾa l-muwaẓẓafūna t-tadrība ṣabāḥa l-ghad

We want the employees to begin training tomorrow morning.

Starting factual content with light أنْ

❌ أثبت الفحص أن يعمل الجهاز بكفاءة

Incorrect — أثبت selects a proposition here; make الجهاز the accusative noun of heavy أنّ and use an indicative predicate.

✅ أثبت الفحص أن الجهاز يعمل بكفاءة عالية

ʾathbata l-faḥṣu ʾanna l-jihāza yaʿmalu bikafāʾatin ʿāliya(h)

The test proved that the device operates with high efficiency.

Retaining mood nūn after light أنْ

❌ أرجو أن ترسلون النسخة اليوم

Incorrect — the Five Verbs delete their mood nūn in the subjunctive after أنْ.

✅ أرجو أن ترسلوا النسخة النهائية اليوم

ʾarjū ʾan tursilū n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata l-yawm

I hope you send the final version today. (Addressing a group.)

Leaving the noun of heavy أنّ nominative

❌ نعلم أن الباحثان جاهزان

naʿlamu ʾanna l-bāḥithāni jāhizāni

Incorrect reading — the dual noun of heavy أنّ must be accusative الباحثينِ.

✅ نعلم أن الباحثين جاهزان لبدء التجربة

naʿlamu ʾanna l-bāḥithayni jāhizāni li-badʾi t-tajriba(h)

We know that the two researchers are ready to begin the experiment.

Putting a perfect directly after light أنْ

❌ قرر الفريق أن غادر الموقع مساء

Incorrect — light أنْ selects a subjunctive imperfect, not a perfect verb.

✅ قرر الفريق أن يغادر الموقع بعد غروب الشمس

qarrara l-farīqu ʾan yughādira l-mawqiʿa baʿda ghurūbi sh-shams

The team decided to leave the site after sunset.

Final diagnostic checklist

  • Identify the governing verb, adjective, noun, or prepositional frame and its normal valency.
  • If the complement begins with an imperfect event, use أنْ and verify the subjunctive marker.
  • If it begins with a topic noun or attached pronoun, use أنّ, make its noun accusative, and parse the predicate separately.
  • Use heavy أنّ when a perfect, habitual, nominal, or future predicate belongs inside a proposition.
  • When both are licensed, decide whether the discourse foregrounds the event or the proposition's topic.
  • Do not use English to/that, definiteness alone, or “what sounds right” as the deciding rule.

Key Takeaways

  • Light أنْ heads a subjunctive verbal event; heavy أنّ embeds a proposition with an accusative noun.
  • Governor valency, clause-initial structure, and information focus are the decisive diagnostics.
  • Some governors license both, but event-centered and proposition-centered versions do not package the content identically.
