Ordering Multiple Adjectives

Arabic can place several adjectives after one noun, but it does not simply reverse the familiar English sequence. In مشروع تعليمي جديد مهم “an important new educational project,” every adjective follows مشروع, yet their internal order reflects classification, description, and discourse focus. A different order may be grammatical while changing what feels central or contrastive.

Every adjective in a stack remains a real modifier. Each one agrees with the noun in gender, number, case, and definiteness, subject to the human–nonhuman plural distinction. Word order helps package meaning; it never cancels agreement.

Start with the agreement frame

Before deciding which adjective comes first, give every adjective the form required by the noun. The following four-way set combines a nisba adjective of nationality with an age description.

ReferentNoun phrase
masculine singularباحث مصري شاب
feminine singularباحثة مصرية شابة
masculine human pluralباحثون مصريون شباب
feminine human pluralباحثات مصريات شابات

وصل باحث مصري شاب لإجراء المقابلات.

waṣala bāḥithun miṣriyyun shābbun li-ʾijrāʾi l-muqābalāt.

A young Egyptian researcher arrived to conduct the interviews.

وصلت باحثة مصرية شابة لإدارة الفريق.

waṣalat bāḥithatun miṣriyyatun shābbatun li-ʾidārati l-farīq.

A young Egyptian female researcher arrived to lead the team.

شارك باحثون مصريون شباب في المشروع.

shāraka bāḥithūna miṣriyyūna shabābun fī l-mashrūʿ.

Young Egyptian researchers participated in the project.

قدمت باحثات مصريات شابات أوراقا مشتركة.

qaddamat bāḥithātun miṣriyyātun shābbātun ʾawrāqan mushtaraka(h).

Young Egyptian female researchers presented joint papers.

These are human plurals, so the adjectives show plural agreement. The singular verb before the overt plural subject in the third and fourth examples is a separate verb–subject order rule; it does not turn the noun phrase's adjectives singular.

A useful semantic tendency, not a mechanical formula

In a neutral stack, an adjective that classifies the noun often stands closer to it, while a descriptive or evaluative adjective follows farther out:

LayerExampleRole
nounمشروعproject
classifyingتعليميeducational, type of project
temporal/stateجديدnew
evaluationمهمimportant

بدأت الوزارة مشروعا تعليميا جديدا مهما في القرى.

badaʾati l-wizāratu mashrūʿan taʿlīmiyyan jadīdan muhimman fī l-qurā.

The ministry launched an important new educational project in the villages.

This is a strong default, not an iron law comparable to case agreement. Speakers can move an adjective outward to give it contrastive weight, and established terms may fix a classifying adjective next to the noun. Long translated stacks are especially dangerous: English orders adjectives before the noun by conventions that do not map word for word onto Arabic.

💡
Build from the noun outward. Put the adjective that most narrowly identifies the noun's type closest, then add state, size, age, or evaluation. Finally read the phrase for scope; there is no universal list that resolves every stack.

Stacked adjectives versus coordination

Two adjectives can simply be stacked, or they can be joined with و. A bare stack often presents the properties as one compact description. Coordination presents them as parallel assertions and is useful when both qualities carry equal discourse weight.

استأجرنا مكتبا هادئا واسعا قرب المحطة.

ʾistaʾjarnā maktaban hādiʾan wāsiʿan qurba l-maḥaṭṭa(h).

We rented a quiet, spacious office near the station.

المكتب هادئ وواسع، لكنه بعيد عن المركز.

al-maktabu hādiʾun wa-wāsiʿun, lakinnahu baʿīdun ʿani l-markaz.

The office is quiet and spacious, but it is far from the center.

The second example is not one attributive stack: هادئ وواسع are coordinated predicates. Arabic has no present-tense is, so definiteness exposes the boundary. Compare the phrase المكتب الهادئ الواسع “the quiet, spacious office,” where both attributive adjectives repeat الـ.

Coordination does not excuse article omission. In a definite attributive phrase, write المشروع الجديد والمهم, not المشروع الجديد ومهم. After و, the second adjective still agrees in definiteness, gender, number, and case.

ناقشنا الاقتراح الجديد والمهم في الاجتماع.

nāqashnā l-iqtirāḥa l-jadīda wa-l-muhimma fī l-ijtimāʿ.

We discussed the new and important proposal at the meeting.

Repeated definiteness and shared case

In a definite stack, every attributive adjective takes الـ. In an indefinite stack, every adjective remains indefinite. Each also shares the noun's case.

راجعت التقرير الاقتصادي الجديد المفصل مساء أمس.

rājaʿtu t-taqrīra l-iqtiṣādiyya l-jadīda l-mufaṣṣala masāʾa ʾams.

I reviewed the detailed new economic report yesterday evening.

تحدثنا في مركز إداري حديث واسع عن الخطة.

taḥaddathnā fī markazin ʾidāriyyin ḥadīthin wāsiʿin ʿani l-khuṭṭa(h).

We discussed the plan in a spacious modern administrative center.

In the second sentence, مركز and all three adjectives are genitive and indefinite after في. Formal case endings make the parallelism audible. In less fully inflected speech, the same written agreement remains visible through articles, gender, and number even when final short vowels are not pronounced.

Human and nonhuman plurals

Every adjective in a stack follows the same agreement decision. Rational human plurals show full plural agreement; ordinary non-rational plurals—normally nonhuman—make all their modifiers feminine singular. Explicit personification can license rational agreement, but it should not be mixed into the neutral default.

المهندسون السوريون الجدد الماهرون مستعدون للعمل.

al-muhandisūna s-sūriyyūna l-jududu l-māhirūna mustaʿiddūna li-l-ʿamal.

The skilled new Syrian engineers are ready to work.

الدراسات الاقتصادية الحديثة المهمة منشورة على الموقع.

ad-dirāsātu l-iqtiṣādiyyatu l-ḥadīthatu l-muhimmatu manshūratun ʿalā l-mawqiʿ.

The important recent economic studies are published on the website.

Although الدراسات is plural, the three modifiers الاقتصادية الحديثة المهمة are all feminine singular because the studies are nonhuman. The predicate منشورة follows the same agreement rule.

Scope and order

Order can change which adjective forms a semantic unit with the noun. كاتب سياسي بارز normally means “a prominent political writer”: سياسي classifies the kind of writer, while بارز evaluates him. كاتب بارز سياسي is possible only in a marked context where political is added as a contrast or afterthought; it is not the neutral default.

Iḍāfa chains create a sharper scope problem because every adjective must follow the whole chain. Compare:

عرضت الجامعة مشروع الكلية الجديد على الممولين.

ʿaraḍati l-jāmiʿatu mashrūʿa l-kulliyyati l-jadīda ʿalā l-mumawwilīn.

The university presented the college's new project to the funders.

Masculine accusative الجديد modifies مشروع. Feminine genitive الجديدة would modify الكلية, producing “the new college's project.” The full system appears on Adjectives after Iḍāfa Chains.

💡
When a stack feels ambiguous, do not rely on commas alone. Use agreement, add و for coordination, split the information into a relative clause, or replace a dense iḍāfa with a لـ phrase.

Register and readability

Dense adjective stacks are common in administrative, legal, and academic prose (formal/academic) because they compress classifications: برنامج تدريبي وطني جديد شامل. They can also obscure scope. Contemporary plain Arabic often improves the sentence by keeping one or two adjectives next to the noun and moving the rest into a predicate or relative clause.

أطلقت الوزارة برنامجا وطنيا جديدا، وهو شامل ومتاح للجميع.

ʾaṭlaqati l-wizāratu barnāmajan waṭaniyyan jadīdan, wa-huwa shāmilun wa-mutāḥun li-l-jamīʿ.

The ministry launched a new national program; it is comprehensive and open to everyone.

This is not simpler because Arabic forbids four adjectives. It is clearer because the second clause gives the reader a new information unit.

Common Mistakes

Copying English adjective-first order

❌ جديد مفصل التقرير وصل اليوم.

Incorrect — ordinary attributive adjectives follow the noun in Arabic.

✅ وصل التقرير الجديد المفصل اليوم.

waṣala t-taqrīru l-jadīdu l-mufaṣṣalu l-yawm.

The new detailed report arrived today.

Marking definiteness only once

❌ قرأت التقرير الاقتصادي جديد مفصل.

Incorrect for one definite noun phrase — every attributive adjective must be definite.

✅ قرأت التقرير الاقتصادي الجديد المفصل.

qaraʾtu t-taqrīra l-iqtiṣādiyya l-jadīda l-mufaṣṣal.

I read the detailed new economic report.

Giving nonhuman plurals plural modifiers

❌ التقارير الاقتصاديون الجديدون جاهزون.

Incorrect — nonhuman plural تقارير controls feminine-singular agreement throughout the stack.

✅ التقارير الاقتصادية الجديدة جاهزة.

at-taqārīru l-iqtiṣādiyyatu l-jadīdatu jāhiza(h).

The new economic reports are ready.

Guessing gender from English meaning

❌ الشركة دولي كبير.

Incorrect — شركة is grammatically feminine, so both predicates must be feminine.

✅ الشركة دولية وكبيرة.

ash-sharikatu dawliyyatun wa-kabīra(h).

The company is international and large.

Letting coordination break definiteness agreement

❌ ناقشنا المشروع الجديد ومهم.

Incorrect for “the new and important project” — مهم without the article becomes a predicate-like form.

✅ ناقشنا المشروع الجديد والمهم.

nāqashnā l-mashrūʿa l-jadīda wa-l-muhimm.

We discussed the new and important project.

Key Takeaways

  • Arabic adjective stacks follow the noun; agreement applies separately to every adjective.
  • Classifying adjectives tend to stand closer to the noun, while descriptive and evaluative adjectives tend to follow, but discourse can alter that order.
  • و coordinates adjectives but does not remove repeated definiteness or other agreement.
  • Human plurals take plural modifiers; nonhuman plurals normally make the whole stack feminine singular.
  • When order and agreement do not make scope unmistakable, rephrase instead of forcing the reader to guess.
