An Arabic iḍāfa joins two or more nouns into a tight chain such as تقرير اللجنة “the committee's report.” Nothing may interrupt that chain. An adjective modifying any member must wait until the entire iḍāfa is complete: تقرير اللجنة الجديد.
That final adjective can modify تقرير or اللجنة, depending on its agreement. Gender, number, case, and definiteness are therefore not decorative endings; they are the signals that tell a reader where the adjective attaches. When those signals do not distinguish the possible heads, the phrase may be genuinely ambiguous and should be rewritten.
The chain stays together
In a basic iḍāfa, the first noun (المضاف) takes no الـ and no tanwīn. The following noun (المضاف إليه) is genitive. Definiteness comes from the last member: تقرير لجنة is “a committee report,” while تقرير اللجنة is “the committee's report.”
An adjective comes only after the complete chain:
| Structure | Arabic | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| indefinite iḍāfa | تقرير لجنة جديد | a new committee report |
| definite iḍāfa | تقرير اللجنة الجديد | the committee's new report |
| adjective of the second noun | تقرير اللجنة الجديدة | the new committee's report |
راجعت تقرير اللجنة الجديد قبل الاجتماع.
rājaʿtu taqrīra l-lajnati l-jadīda qabla l-ijtimāʿ.
I reviewed the committee's new report before the meeting.
قرأت تقرير اللجنة الجديدة هذا الصباح.
qaraʾtu taqrīra l-lajnati l-jadīdati hādhā ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
I read the new committee's report this morning.
Masculine accusative الجديدَ in the first sentence agrees with object تقريرَ. Feminine genitive الجديدةِ in the second agrees with اللجنةِ. English puts new directly before the noun it modifies; Arabic keeps the iḍāfa intact and lets agreement carry that information afterward.
Case can resolve an otherwise invisible contrast
Sometimes the possible heads share gender and number, so the unvocalized spelling does not reveal the attachment. Case can do so in careful reading. In the next pair, الطالب and كتاب are both masculine singular and the visible phrase كتاب الطالب الجديد is identical.
وصل كتاب الطالب الجديد أمس.
waṣala kitābu ṭ-ṭālibi l-jadīdi ʾams.
The new student's book arrived yesterday.
وصل كتاب الطالب الجديد بالبريد.
waṣala kitābu ṭ-ṭālibi l-jadīdu bi-l-barīd.
The student's new book arrived by mail.
Genitive الجديدِ modifies genitive الطالبِ in the first sentence. Nominative الجديدُ modifies nominative subject كتابُ in the second. In ordinary unvocalized prose, both appear as الجديد. Context may resolve them, but a writer should not depend on a case ending that most readers cannot see.
If the intended meaning matters and context is not decisive, rephrase: كتاب الطالب الجديد الذي وصل أمس can still be awkward, while الكتاب الجديد للطالب clearly makes “new” modify “book,” and كتاب الطالب الذي انضم حديثًا clearly identifies a newly arrived student.
The four-way set: modifying the possessor
When the adjective modifies a human possessor, it agrees with that possessor and remains genitive. This produces a useful four-way diagnostic:
| Possessor | Phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | كتاب الطالب الجديد | the new male student's book |
| feminine singular | كتاب الطالبة الجديدة | the new female student's book |
| masculine human plural | كتب الطلاب الجدد | the new students' books |
| feminine human plural | كتب الطالبات الجديدات | the new female students' books |
وصلت كتب الطلاب الجدد إلى المكتبة.
waṣalat kutubu ṭ-ṭullābi l-jududi ʾilā l-maktaba(h).
The new students' books arrived at the library.
عرضت المعلمة أعمال الطالبات الجديدات في القاعة.
ʿaraḍati l-muʿallimatu ʾaʿmāla ṭ-ṭālibāti l-jadīdāti fī l-qāʿa(h).
The teacher displayed the new female students' work in the hall.
The plural shape of the first noun does not control these adjectives. الجدد and الجديدات point to the human possessors الطلاب and الطالبات, not to nonhuman كتب or أعمال.
Modifying the head instead
An adjective for the first noun still comes after the last noun, but agrees with the first noun's syntactic case. Gender often makes the attachment immediately visible.
فحص الميكانيكي سيارة المدير الجديدة.
faḥaṣa l-mīkānīkiyyu sayyārata l-mudīri l-jadīda(h).
The mechanic inspected the manager's new car.
فحص الميكانيكي سيارة المدير الجديد.
faḥaṣa l-mīkānīkiyyu sayyārata l-mudīri l-jadīd.
The mechanic inspected the new manager's car.
Feminine الجديدة must modify سيارة; masculine genitive الجديد must modify المدير. This contrast is robust even when final short case vowels are omitted in speech.
Phrase or complete sentence?
A definite adjective after a definite iḍāfa is attributive. An indefinite adjective can instead be the predicate of the entire definite phrase.
تقرير اللجنة الجديد مفصل وواضح.
taqrīru l-lajnati l-jadīdu mufaṣṣalun wa-wāḍiḥ.
The committee's new report is detailed and clear.
تقرير اللجنة جديد ومفصل.
taqrīru l-lajnati jadīdun wa-mufaṣṣal.
The committee's report is new and detailed.
In the first, الجديد belongs inside the subject phrase and مفصل وواضح are predicates. In the second, جديد ومفصل are both predicates. English uses is to mark this boundary; Arabic uses definiteness.
Human and nonhuman plural diagnostics
An adjective modifying a rational human plural possessor takes full plural agreement. An adjective modifying an ordinary non-rational plural head—normally nonhuman—takes feminine-singular agreement. Explicit personification can shift a nonhuman referent into rational agreement; the neutral contrast below distinguishes two readings after the same chain.
تقارير الطلاب الجدد دقيقة ومفيدة.
taqārīru ṭ-ṭullābi l-jududi daqīqatun wa-mufīda(h).
The new students' reports are accurate and useful.
تقارير الطلاب الجديدة دقيقة ومفيدة.
taqārīru ṭ-ṭullābi l-jadīdatu daqīqatun wa-mufīda(h).
The students' new reports are accurate and useful.
Plural الجدد modifies the human students. Feminine singular الجديدة modifies nonhuman plural تقارير. Notice that both predicates are also feminine singular because the subject of each whole sentence is تقارير.
More than one adjective after the chain
If different nouns in the iḍāfa have modifiers, the modifier of the final noun normally comes first, directly after it, and the modifier of the first noun follows. This preserves a local noun–adjective unit before the description returns to the head.
صدر قرار اللجنة الاقتصادية الجديد اليوم.
ṣadara qarāru l-lajnati l-iqtiṣādiyyati l-jadīdu l-yawm.
The economic committee's new decision was issued today.
Feminine genitive الاقتصادية modifies اللجنة; masculine nominative الجديد modifies subject قرار. With more adjectives, the result can become hard to process even when it is formally grammatical. The principles of coordination and readable ordering are covered on Ordering Multiple Adjectives.
Genuine ambiguity and responsible rewriting
Agreement cannot always save you. مدير قسم التعليم الجديد may describe a new director, a new department, or—in a suitable context—new education. Unvocalized prose hides case endings, and adjacent nouns may share gender and number. A comma does not change the syntax.
Formal contemporary writing should unpack high-stakes ambiguity:
- المدير الجديد لقسم التعليم — “the new director of the education department”
- مدير قسم التعليم الذي أُنشئ حديثًا — “the director of the education department that was recently established”
- مدير القسم الجديد للتعليم — a restructured phrase when “new department” is intended
Administrative and legal prose (formal) often overuses long iḍāfa chains because they compress information. Clarity is a stronger goal than maximum nominal density. A لـ phrase, a relative clause, or a second sentence can make scope explicit.
عينت الوزارة مديرا جديدا لقسم التدريب.
ʿayyanati l-wizāratu mudīran jadīdan li-qismi t-tadrīb.
The ministry appointed a new director for the training department.
The adjective now sits directly with مديرا, and لقسم التدريب expresses the institutional relation without attachment uncertainty.
Common Mistakes
Inserting the adjective inside the chain
❌ راجعت قرار الجديد اللجنة.
Incorrect — nothing may separate the two nouns of the iḍāfa.
✅ راجعت قرار اللجنة الجديد.
rājaʿtu qarāra l-lajnati l-jadīd.
I reviewed the committee's new decision.
Adding the article to the first noun
❌ قرأت التقرير اللجنة الجديد.
Incorrect — the first noun of an iḍāfa cannot take الـ.
✅ قرأت تقرير اللجنة الجديد.
qaraʾtu taqrīra l-lajnati l-jadīd.
I read the committee's new report.
Omitting definiteness agreement
❌ سلمت تقرير اللجنة جديد إلى المديرة.
Incorrect for “the committee's new report” — the attributive adjective must be definite.
✅ سلمت تقرير اللجنة الجديد إلى المديرة.
sallamtu taqrīra l-lajnati l-jadīda ʾilā l-mudīra(h).
I delivered the committee's new report to the manager.
Giving a nonhuman plural a human plural adjective
❌ تقارير البنك الجديدون منشورة.
Incorrect — nonhuman plural تقارير takes feminine-singular adjective agreement.
✅ تقارير البنك الجديدة منشورة.
taqārīru l-banki l-jadīdatu manshūra(h).
The bank's new reports are published.
Guessing gender from the English head word
❌ سياسة البنك الجديد أثارت نقاشا.
Incorrect for “the bank's new policy” — سياسة is feminine, so its adjective must be feminine.
✅ سياسة البنك الجديدة أثارت نقاشا.
siyāsatu l-banki l-jadīdatu ʾathārat niqāshā.
The bank's new policy prompted a debate.
Key Takeaways
- Complete the iḍāfa before adding any adjective; never insert a modifier between its nouns.
- An adjective follows the whole chain but agrees with the particular noun it modifies.
- Case can distinguish attachment in vocalized formal Arabic, while gender and number remain visible in ordinary text.
- Human plural and nonhuman-plural agreement often reveal whether an adjective modifies the possessor or the head.
- If several nouns share the same agreement features, use a لـ phrase or relative clause to remove genuine ambiguity.
