One Arabic-script word can contain several pieces that English would write separately. In وبخبرك “and I tell you,” Lebanese writing joins the conjunction و, the b-imperfect marker بـ, the verb خبر, and the object suffix ـك. The spaces are not a word-for-word translation of English spaces: they reflect Arabic clitic structure.
This page gives the practical joining conventions used in everyday urban Lebanese writing, with Beirut pronunciation as the production baseline. It is an orthography guide, not a claim that every colloquial writer spells every borderline form identically.
The compact joining map
| Piece | Written behavior | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| و “and” | joins the next word | وبخبرك | and I tell you |
| فـ “so/then” (formal); also used in edited colloquial prose | joins the next word | فمنرجع | so we go back |
| بـ “in/with/by” | joins its host | بالبيت | in the house |
| لـ “to/for” | joins its host | لرفيقي | for my friend |
| الـ “the” | joins the noun or adjective | البيت الكبير | the big house |
| بـ imperfect marker | joins the verb | بكتب | I write / I usually write |
| هالـ demonstrative determiner (informal) | joins the noun | هالكتاب | this book |
| pronoun suffix | joins the word before it | كتابي، شفتها، فيها | my book, I saw her/it, in her/it |
| عم، رح، ما، مش | remain separate | عم بكتب، رح روح، ما بعرف، مش هون | I’m writing, I’ll go, I don’t know, not here |
The key distinction is between a clitic, which leans phonologically and orthographically on a neighboring word, and an independent particle, which keeps its own word boundary. Meaning alone cannot decide the spacing: بـ attaches both as a preposition and as an imperfect marker, while progressive عم and future رح remain separate even though they also modify a verb.
وبخبرك بس بوصل عالبيت.
w-bkhabbirak bass būṣal ʿal-bēt.
And I'll let you know as soon as I get home.
Proclitics join on the right
The conjunction و is written directly against what follows: وهون “and here,” والقهوة “and the coffee,” ورح “and will.” This stays true when the following item is itself an independent word. Thus رح is separate from its verb, but attached و produces ورح روح, not و رح روح.
هاد منيح، وهاي أحسن شوي.
hād mnīḥ, w-hāy aḥsan shwayy.
This one is good, and this one is a little better.
هيدا الكتاب لإلي، وهيدي المجلة لإلك.
hayda l-ktāb l-ʾilī, w-hayde l-mazhalle l-ʾilak.
This book is mine, and this magazine is yours.
هيدا / هيدي (informal; common Lebanese) coexist with the course’s first forms هاد / هاي. (regional: Syria, Palestine, Jordan) Demonstrative inventories and spellings differ, but normal وـ attachment does not become an optional English-style space.
Single-letter prepositions also attach. With the article, they form one written word: بـ + البيت → بالبيت. With لـ + الـ, Arabic spelling contracts the sequence to للـ: لـ + البيت → للبيت. This is a real spelling operation, not merely fast pronunciation.
المي بالبراد والقهوة عالطاولة.
el-mayy bil-barrād w-el-ʾahwe ʿaṭ-ṭāwle.
The water is in the fridge, and the coffee is on the table.
The frequent عالـ “on/to the” in (informal) Lebanese writing represents the spoken contraction of على + الـ. This guide writes عالبيت، عالجامعة. A more conservative على البيت is also encountered, especially in edited or cross-regional writing; do not alternate randomly inside one document.
The b-marker belongs to the verb
Urban Lebanese uses attached بـ in ordinary habitual, generic, and many present-tense verb forms. Write بعرف “I know,” بتوصل “you arrive,” and بيشرب “he drinks,” never ب عرف. The progressive phrase has two boundaries: independent عم, then attached بـ + verb.
عم بكتبلك من القهوة.
ʿam bktoblak min el-ʾahwe.
I'm writing to you from the café.
Here بكتبلك contains the b-marker, the verb, and ـلك “to you.” The page on the b-prefix explains its grammar; the spelling point is simply that the marker does not stand alone.
By contrast, write رح خبرك “I’ll tell you,” with a space after رح, and ما بعرف “I don’t know,” with a space after ما. English speakers often over-apply one rule: either separating every small meaning-bearing element or joining every preverbal particle. Lebanese writing requires learning which pieces are clitics.
رح خبرك شو صار، بس هلق ما فيني إحكي.
raḥ khabbirak shū ṣār, bass hallaʾ ma fīnī iḥke.
I'll tell you what happened, but I can't talk right now.
Suffixes join on the left
Possessive, object, and prepositional pronouns attach to the preceding host: بيتي “my house,” شفتها “I saw her/it,” معك “with you,” فيها “in her/it.” Their vowels and shapes can vary with the host; those paradigms belong on the suffix inventory. The stable writing principle is that no space intervenes.
شفتها مبارح وحكيت معها.
shifta mbēriḥ w-ḥakēt maʿa.
I saw her yesterday and talked with her.
Longer chains are normal, not typographical clutter. وبخبركن can encode “and I tell you all”: و + ب + خبر + كن. The word remains readable because experienced readers recognize the outer clitics and the verbal core.
Two minimal spelling contrasts
The article creates a one-letter contrast inside an already joined prepositional word:
ساكن ببيت زغير.
sākin bi-bēt zghīr.
He lives in a small house.
ساكن بالبيت الزغير.
sākin bil-bēt ez-zghīr.
He lives in the small house.
ببيت is بـ + بيت, indefinite “in a house.” بالبيت is بـ + الـ + بيت, definite “in the house.” A space after ب would not express that contrast correctly.
With لـ, definiteness triggers the written contraction للـ:
جبت المفتاح لبيت رامي.
zhebt el-miftāḥ la-bēt Rāmī.
I brought the key to Rami's house.
جبت المفتاح للبيت.
zhebt el-miftāḥ lal-bēt.
I brought the key to the house.
A real message line
(informal) A Lebanese message naturally packs several attachments into a short line:
أنا بالقهوة حد الجامعة، إذا بتوصل قبلي خبرني.
ana bil-ʾahwe ḥadd el-zhēmʿa, iza btūṣal ʾablī khabbirnī.
I'm at the café by the university; if you get there before me, let me know.
In بالقهوة, the preposition and article attach; in بتوصل, the b-marker attaches; and in قبلي، خبرني, suffixes attach. إذا remains a separate conditional word. Latin transliteration is useful as a reading aid, but writing only ana bil-ʾahwe... avoids learning precisely these Arabic-script boundaries.
Common Mistakes
Separating every clitic because English uses separate words
❌ و ب خبر ك بس ب وصل.
Incorrect — the conjunction, b-marker, and object suffix are clitics, not separate Arabic words.
✅ وبخبرك بس بوصل.
w-bkhabbirak bass būṣal.
And I'll let you know as soon as I arrive.
Joining independent preverbal particles
❌ عمبكتب ورحخبرك.
Incorrect — ʿam and raḥ remain separate from the verb in this house style.
✅ عم بكتب ورح خبرك.
ʿam bktob w-raḥ khabbirak.
I'm writing, and I'll let you know.
Detaching a pronoun suffix
❌ شفت ها وحكيت مع ها.
Incorrect — object and prepositional pronouns attach to their host.
✅ شفتها وحكيت معها.
shifta w-ḥakēt maʿa.
I saw her and talked with her.
Importing Persian keyboard forms
❌ هيك بیکون الکتاب منيح.
Incorrect Arabic encoding — Persian ya and kaf have entered the text.
✅ هيك بيكون الكتاب منيح.
hēk byikūn el-ktāb mnīḥ.
This way the book will be good.
Key Takeaways
Join وـ، بـ، لـ، الـ, the b-imperfect marker, هالـ, and pronominal suffixes to their host. Keep عم، رح، ما، مش as independent words. Expect legitimate variation in some colloquial spellings, such as عالبيت / على البيت, but do not confuse community variation with arbitrary spacing or Persian Unicode characters. Lebanese joining conventions package real spoken grammar into recognizable Arabic word shapes.
