English spaces almost every grammatical word separately: and I will tell her. Lebanese Arabic can package the same information into وبخبرها: conjunction وـ + b-marker بـ + verb خبر + object ـها. Detaching those pieces makes familiar Arabic word shapes disappear; attaching independent particles such as عم or رح creates the opposite problem.
Spacing is only the visible symptom. A learner must also choose the right host. A direct object attaches to a verb, a pronoun governed by مع، في، على attaches to that preposition, and a second pronominal object often needs the independent carrier يا-. Lebanese pronominal markers attach to verbs, nouns, and prepositions; Al-Bekai's Lebanese Arabic Clitics: A Typological Study documents these host types and ordering issues in ditransitive constructions.
First repair the written boundary
| Piece | Write it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| وـ “and” | joined to the following word | وبعدين |
| بـ, لـ, and الـ | joined to their host | بالبيت، لرفيقي |
| b-imperfect marker | joined to the verb | بكتب |
| object, possessive, and prepositional suffixes | joined on the left | شفته، بيتي، معه |
| عم، رح، ما، مش | independent words | عم بكتب، رح اكتب |
وبخبرها أول ما اوصل عالفندق.
w-bkhabbirha awwal ma ūṣal ʿal-fondoʾ.
And I'll let her know as soon as I reach the hotel. (joined conjunction, b-marker, and object)
عم بكتب العنوان، ورح ابعته بعد دقيقة.
ʿam biktob el-ʿonwēn, w-raḥ baʿto baʿd daʾīʾa.
I'm writing the address, and I'll send it in a minute. (عم and رح remain separate)
The Arabic word stays joined even when the teaching romanization inserts hyphens to reveal seams. w-bkhabbirha is an analysis aid; it does not authorize و ب خبر ها in Arabic script. See the full joining map for article contractions and borderline colloquial spellings.
Object and prepositional suffixes need different hosts
In شفته “I saw him,” the direct object attaches to the verb. In حكيت معه “I spoke with him,” the participant belongs to the lexical frame حكى مع, so ـه attaches to مع. English puts both pronouns after a verb and therefore hides this distinction.
شفته عند المصعد وحكيت معه عن الاجتماع.
shifto ʿind el-maṣʿad w-ḥkēt maʿo ʿan el-izhtimēʿ.
I saw him by the elevator and spoke with him about the meeting. (direct object, then prepositional suffix)
دورت عليها بكل الغرف وما لقيتها.
dawwart ʿalēha bi-kill el-ghoraf w-ma lʾēta.
I looked for it in every room and didn't find it. (feminine prepositional suffix, then direct object)
The correct host comes from the verb's complement frame, not from pronoun gender. Learn شاف حدا, حكى مع حدا, دور على شي, and سأل عن شي as constructions.
One verb-bound object, then a carrier
With transfer verbs, first identify the theme transferred and the recipient receiving it. Full nouns commonly appear as بعت الملف لمايا. A pronominal recipient can attach to the verb: بعتلها الملف. If both are pronouns, the productive pattern places the recipient on the verb and the theme on يا-: بعتلها ياه “I sent it to her.”
بعتلها العقد، وبعد شوي بعتلها ياه موقع.
baʿattilha l-ʿaʾd, w-baʿd shwayy baʿattilha yēh mwaʾʾaʿ.
I sent her the contract, and a little later I sent it to her signed. (recipient clitic; masculine theme on ياه)
فرجيتك الصورة، وهلق بفرجيك ياها مكبرة.
farzhētak eṣ-ṣūra, w-hallaʾ bfarzhīk yēha mkabbara.
I showed you the photo, and now I'll show it to you enlarged. (recipient on verb; feminine theme on ياها)
Do not stack two ordinary object suffixes on the same verb. ياها remains its own word because يا- is the host of the theme pronoun. Gender on ياه / ياها follows the theme, not the recipient.
Order follows roles, not English position
English alternates “send her the file” and “send the file to her.” Lebanese alternates licensed packages, not free word shuffling:
| Theme | Recipient | Lebanese package |
|---|---|---|
| full noun | full noun | بعت الملف لرنا |
| full noun | pronoun | بعتلها الملف |
| pronoun | full noun | بعته لرنا |
| pronoun | pronoun | بعتلها ياه |
An analytical alternative such as بعته إلها is also natural. What matters is that each pronoun has a licensed host and the roles remain recoverable. The detailed paradigms appear in Two Objects and Clitic Ordering.
Clitics join imperatives too
Objects and recipients attach to a command: خبرني “tell me,” جيبلها “bring her,” عطيني “give me.” Weak or vowel-final commands may reshape before the suffix, so spacing and morphology must be repaired together.
خبرني بس توصل، وجيبلها نسخة عن المفتاح.
khabbirne bass tūṣal, w-zhīblha noskha ʿan el-miftēḥ.
Let me know when you arrive, and bring her a copy of the key. (two imperative clitics)
Short repair dialogue
وصلتك الصورة اللي بعتلك ياها؟
wiṣlitik eṣ-ṣūra yalle baʿatlik yēha?
Maya: Did you receive the photo I sent you? (feminine addressee; recipient clitic plus feminine theme carrier)
إيه، وصلتني، بس ابعتيلي ياها أوضح.
ē, wiṣlitne, bass baʿtīle yēha awḍaḥ.
Nour: Yes, I got it, but send it to me more clearly. (feminine imperative with recipient clitic)
طيب، وبرجع بخبرك لما ابعتها.
ṭayyeb, w-barzhaʿ bkhabbirak lamma baʿta.
Maya: Okay, and I'll let you know when I send it. (joined outer clitics and feminine object)
Common Mistakes
1. Detaching the conjunction and b-marker
❌ و ب خبرك بكرا.
Incorrect spacing—وـ and the b-marker join the verb word.
✅ وبخبرك بكرا إذا تغير الموعد.
w-bkhabbirak bokra iza tghayyar el-mawʿed.
And I'll tell you tomorrow if the appointment changes.
2. Joining independent عم to the verb
❌ عمبراجع الأرقام.
Incorrect in this house style—عم remains a separate particle, while b- joins the verb.
✅ عم براجع الأرقام قبل ما ابعت التقرير.
ʿam brēzheʿ el-arʾām ʾabel ma baʿat et-taʾrīr.
I'm checking the numbers before I send the report.
3. Detaching an object suffix
❌ شفت ها حد المصعد.
Incorrect—ـها is a bound direct-object suffix.
✅ شفتها حد المصعد وناديتلها.
shifta ḥadd el-maṣʿad w-nādētilha.
I saw her by the elevator and called out to her.
4. Detaching a suffix from a preposition
❌ حكيت مع ها عن المشكلة.
Incorrect—prepositional ـها attaches directly to مع.
✅ حكيت معها عن المشكلة واتفقنا.
ḥkēt maʿa ʿan el-moshkle w-ittafaʾna.
I spoke with her about the problem, and we agreed.
5. Putting the pronoun on the wrong host
❌ دورتها بكل المكاتب.
Incorrect for ‘looked for it’—دور selects على, so the pronoun belongs on the preposition.
✅ دورت عليها بكل المكاتب وما كانت هون.
dawwart ʿalēha bi-kill el-makēteb w-ma kēnit hōn.
I looked for it in every office, but it wasn't here.
6. Stacking two object suffixes
❌ بعتلهاه عالإيميل.
Incorrect—the masculine theme needs a separate يا- carrier after the recipient clitic.
✅ بعتلها ياه عالإيميل من مبارح.
baʿattilha yēh ʿal-īmēl min mbēreḥ.
I sent it to her by email yesterday.
7. Choosing يا- from the recipient instead of the theme
❌ بعتلها ياها، مع إنو الملف مذكر.
Incorrect for this reference—masculine الملف requires ياه, regardless of the female recipient.
✅ بعتلها ياه، وهي رح تطبعه.
baʿattilha yēh, w-hiyye raḥ tiṭbaʿo.
I sent it to her, and she's going to print it. (masculine theme)
8. Copying English double-object order
❌ جبت مايا القهوة عالغرفة.
Incorrect for the neutral intended reading—mark the full recipient with لـ.
✅ جبت القهوة لمايا عغرفة الاجتماعات.
zhibt el-ʾahwe la-Māya ʿa-ghorfet el-izhtimēʿāt.
I brought the coffee to Maya in the meeting room.
9. Using formal clitic morphology in casual speech
❌ رأيتها وتحدثت معها صباحا.
Grammatical formal MSA, but not the intended casual Beirut sentence.
✅ شفتها وحكيت معها الصبح بالقهوة.
shifta w-ḥkēt maʿa ṣ-ṣoboḥ bil-ʾahwe.
I saw her and spoke with her this morning at the café. (informal Lebanese)
Repair procedure
First circle independent عم، رح، ما، مش so they retain spaces. Join left-edge وـ، بـ، لـ، الـ and every suffix. Next label each pronoun as theme, recipient, direct object, possessor, or object of a preposition. Finally, check whether its host is licensed by the verb's frame. If two pronominal objects compete for the verb, keep one licensed clitic and place the other on يا-, or use an analytical phrase such as بعته إلها.
Key Takeaways
Join conjunctions, single-letter prepositions, the article, b-imperfect marker, and suffix pronouns. Keep عم، رح، ما، مش separate. Direct objects attach to verbs; governed pronouns attach to their prepositions. In two-object clauses, identify theme and recipient before ordering them, and use يا- rather than stacking two ordinary pronominal objects on one verb.
