Lebanese usually marks an imperfect verb used as an ordinary present-time statement with an attached b-series: بكتب “I write,” بتكتب “you/she write(s),” بيكتب “he writes.” This marker helps present a habit, generalization, characteristic behavior, or current state as an independent assertion.
It is not a verb meaning “do,” and it is not simply the English present tense. Ongoing activity commonly uses عم + b-imperfect in the Beirut baseline, while particles such as رح، لازم، ممكن select a bare imperfect without the b-marker. The contrast is grammatical viewpoint and dependency, not a one-word translation.
The marker is attached to the person form
The b-series comes before the imperfect’s person prefix and is written as part of the same Arabic word. In connected speech, the two pieces form one compact cluster.
| Subject | Lebanese form | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | بكتب | biktob | I write |
| you m. / she | بتكتب | btiktob | you write / she writes |
| you f. | بتكتبي | btiktbe | you write |
| he | بيكتب | byiktob | he writes |
| we | منكتب | mniktob | we write |
| you pl. | بتكتبوا | btiktbo | you all write |
| they | بيكتبوا | byiktbo | they write |
The first-person plural has مـ in ordinary Lebanese منكتب, not a transparent sequence بنكتب. It belongs to the same predicational series but must be learned as its person-specific form.
بكتب ملاحظاتي عالتلفون.
biktob mulāḥaẓāte ʿat-tilifōn.
I write my notes on my phone. (informal; first-person ordinary imperfect)
بتكتبي التقارير بالعربي أو بالإنكليزي؟
btiktbe t-taʾārīr bil-ʿarabe aw bil-inklīze?
Do you write the reports in Arabic or English? (informal; one female addressee)
منكتب للزبون قبل ما نبعت الطلب.
mniktob laz-zabūn ʾabel ma nibʿat eṭ-ṭalab.
We write to the customer before we send the order. (professional spoken routine)
Habits and recurring events
Frequency expressions favor the b-imperfect because the verb states a recurring pattern, not one event currently unfolding.
كل صبح بشرب قهوة قبل الشغل.
kill ṣobeḥ bishrab ʾahwe ʾabel esh-shoghol.
Every morning I drink coffee before work. (informal habit)
عادة بيسكروا المحل عالتمانية.
ʿāde bysakkro l-maḥall ʿat-tamēnye.
They usually close the shop at eight. (informal routine)
ما منشتغل نهار الأحد.
ma mnishtaghel nhār el-aḥad.
We don't work on Sundays. (informal negative habit)
Negation with ما does not remove the marker: ما منشتغل remains a b-series imperfect. Lebanese does not insert an equivalent of English do not.
Generalizations, capacities, and current states
The same form describes what normally holds or what something characteristically does. Stative verbs such as بعرف “I know,” بحب “I like,” and بفهم “I understand” naturally use it for a state holding now.
هاي البطاقة بتفتح باب الكراج.
hāy el-bṭāʾa btiftaḥ bēb el-karāzh.
This card opens the garage door. (informal; characteristic function)
بعرف وين المكتب، بس ما بعرف الطابق.
baʿref wēn el-maktab, bass ma baʿref eṭ-ṭābeʾ.
I know where the office is, but I don't know the floor. (informal current knowledge state)
التلج بيدوب لما بيضل برا.
et-talzh bydūb lamma byḍall barra.
Ice melts when it stays outside. (generalization)
The b-marker itself does not mean “usually,” “can,” or “know.” Those readings come from the lexical verb, aspectual class, time phrase, and discourse.
Habit versus ongoing activity
A plain b-imperfect can name a routine. To explicitly zoom in on an activity unfolding now, the course’s Beirut baseline adds عم before the complete b-form.
بشتغل من البيت كل جمعة.
bishtaghel men el-bēt kill zhomʿa.
I work from home every Friday. (habitual b-imperfect)
هلق عم بحضر اجتماع من البيت لأن المكتب مسكر.
hallaʾ ʿam baḥḍar izhtimēʿ men el-bēt laʾann el-maktab msakkar.
Right now I'm attending a meeting from home because the office is closed. (ongoing; Beirut عم + b-form)
You will hear عم + bare imperfect in Lebanese and elsewhere in the northern Levant (regional/social variation). This guide keeps عم بشتغل as its production baseline. See The b-Imperfect and عم Progressive.
Bare after modal and future particles
Particles that license a dependent action normally select the agreeing imperfect without the b-marker. “Bare” means unmarked by the b-series, not unconjugated.
لازم اكتب للمدير اليوم.
lāzem iktob lal-mdīr el-yōm.
I have to write to the manager today. (لازم + first-person bare imperfect)
ممكن تكتبي العنوان هون؟
momken tiktbe l-ʿonwēn hōn?
Could you write the address here? (polite request to one woman; bare imperfect)
بكرا رح يكتبوا الجواب النهائي.
bokra raḥ yiktbo l-zhawēb en-nihēʾe.
Tomorrow they'll write the final answer. (future رح + plural bare imperfect)
The subject marking remains: اكتب is “I write,” تكتبي is feminine “you write,” and يكتبوا is “they write.” Only the ordinary predicational marker is absent. See The Bare Imperfect.
Scheduled fact versus explicit future
A b-form with a future time can present a schedule or settled fact. رح + bare explicitly frames a prospective event. This is a stance contrast, not merely present versus future time.
بكرا المحل بيفتح عالسبعة.
bokra l-maḥall byiftaḥ ʿas-sabʿa.
Tomorrow the shop opens at seven. (scheduled fact with b-form)
بكرا رح يفتحوا الفرع الجديد.
bokra raḥ yiftaḥo l-fareʿ el-zhdīd.
Tomorrow they'll open the new branch. (prospective event with رح + bare)
English may use a present form in the first and will in the second, but the Lebanese contrast depends on how the speaker presents the event.
Imperfect بـ versus prepositional بـ
Arabic spelling joins both to what follows, but they do different jobs. The imperfect marker attaches to a verb; prepositional بـ attaches to a noun and can mark location or instrument.
بكتب بالقلم الأزرق.
biktob bil-ʾalam el-azraʾ.
I write with the blue pen. (first بـ marks the verb; second بـ marks the instrument)
بيشتغل بالبنك.
byishtaghel bil-bank.
He works at the bank. (verbal b-series plus locative بـ)
The two homographs are not interchangeable and should not be separated in normal spelling.
Dialogue: routine, present activity, and necessity
عادة وين بتكتب التقارير؟
ʿāde wēn btiktob et-taʾārīr?
Nour: Where do you usually write the reports? (informal habit)
بكتبن بالمكتب، بس هلق عم بكتب واحد بالبيت.
biktobon bil-maktab, bass hallaʾ ʿam biktob wāḥad bil-bēt.
Tarek: I write them at the office, but right now I'm writing one at home.
وليش عم بتشتغل هلق؟
w-lēsh ʿam btishtaghel hallaʾ?
Nour: And why are you working now?
لأنو لازم خلصه قبل بكرا.
laʾanno lāzem khallṣo ʾabel bokra.
Tarek: Because I have to finish it before tomorrow. (لازم + bare verb)
Common Mistakes
Writing the marker as a separate word
❌ ب كتب تقرير كل أسبوع.
Incorrect spelling — the imperfect marker is attached to the verb.
✅ بكتب تقرير كل أسبوع.
biktob taʾrīr kill osbūʿ.
I write a report every week. (habitual b-imperfect)
Omitting the marker in an independent habit
❌ روح عالجامعة بالقطار كل اتنين.
Incorrect for ‘I go every Monday’ — bare روح needs a licensing environment and can also look like an imperative.
✅ بروح عالجامعة بالقطار كل اتنين.
brūḥ ʿal-zhēmʿa bil-ʾiṭār kill itnēn.
I go to the university by train every Monday.
Keeping b- after لازم
❌ لازم بكتب للمدير.
Incorrect — لازم selects a bare agreeing action.
✅ لازم اكتب للمدير.
lāzem iktob lal-mdīr.
I have to write to the manager.
Treating every present-time event as a plain b-form
❌ هلق بصلح السيارة.
Misleading for the intended explicitly ongoing reading — a plain b-form does not itself zoom in on an unfolding event.
✅ هلق عم بصلح السيارة.
hallaʾ ʿam bṣalleḥ es-sayyāra.
I'm repairing the car right now. (Beirut progressive baseline)
Key Takeaways
Attach the b-series directly to an imperfect verb for habits, generalizations, characteristics, and current states. Remember the person-specific series, including first-person plural مـ in منكتب. Use عم + b-form for an explicitly ongoing event in the Beirut baseline. After رح، لازم، ممكن، بدّي، فيني and similar licensors, keep agreement but remove the b-marker. Finally, distinguish verbal b- from identically written prepositional بـ by what it attaches to and what job it performs.
