في fī: exist and can

Lebanese فيfī has three closely related jobs. Bare في introduces existence: في قهوة “there is coffee.” As a preposition, it means “in,” normally joined to a following noun: بالبيت “in the house.” With a personal suffix, it can express situational ability: فيني روح “I can go.”

None of these is an ordinary verb conjugation. في has no perfect, b-imperfect, command, or participle. Time is supplied by كان or رح يكون, negation by ما, and the action after ability في appears in the bare imperfect.

Existential في: there is and there are

Existential في is invariant before singulars, plurals, count nouns, and mass nouns. The following noun is the entity whose existence or availability is asserted.

في قهوة طازة بالمطبخ إذا بدك.

fī ʾahwe ṭāze bil-maṭbakh iza baddak.

There's fresh coffee in the kitchen if you want some. (informal hospitality)

في تلات كراسي فاضيين حد الشباك.

fī tlēt krēse fāḍyīn ḥadd esh-shobbēk.

There are three empty chairs by the window. (informal; invariant existential with plural pivot)

English agrees there is/there are with the following noun. Lebanese في does not. Do not invent a plural existential form.

The location can follow the entity, as above, or be placed first when it is the established frame: بالمبنى في مصعدين “in the building there are two elevators.” This is not the same information structure as simply locating an already identified object.

💡
Existential في introduces an entity into the conversation. A plain location clause tells you where an already identified entity is: في مفتاح بالدرج “there's a key in the drawer” versus المفتاح بالدرج “the key is in the drawer.”

Location and suffixed prepositional forms

Prepositional في means “in,” though before a noun it normally surfaces as joined بـ in Lebanese: بالغرفة، بالمكتب، بالعلبة. With a pronoun, suffixed forms include فيي “in me,” فيك “in you,” فيه “in him/it,” and فيها “in her/it.”

القنينة فيها مي، بس الكاسة فاضية.

el-ʾannīne fīha mayy, bass el-kēse fāḍye.

The bottle has water in it, but the glass is empty. (informal; locative فيها)

بهالمبنى في صيدلية بالطابق الأرضي.

b-hal-mabna fī ṣaydaliyye biṭ-ṭābeʾ el-arḍe.

In this building there's a pharmacy on the ground floor. (neutral; fronted location plus existential)

The string فيها can therefore mean locative “in it/her” or modal “she can.” What follows usually resolves it: فيها مي “there is water in it,” but فيها تجي “she can come.”

Ability and possibility suffix paradigm

With personal suffixes, في identifies the person for whom an action is possible. The following bare verb still agrees with the actor.

إنتفيكfīk
إنتيفيكيfīke
هوفيهfīh

فيكي تستعملي مكتبي لحد ما يصلحوا مكتبك.

fīke tistaʿmle maktabe la-ḥadd ma yṣallḥo maktabik.

You can use my office until they fix yours. (professional; permission to one woman)

فيهن يبعتوا الطلب اليوم إذا الطريق مش معجوقة.

fīhon yibʿato ṭ-ṭalab el-yōm iza ṭ-ṭarīʾ mish maʿzhūʾa.

They can send the order today if the road isn't congested. (professional; situational possibility)

This construction is especially natural when circumstances, time, rules, or availability permit the action. بقدر overlaps with it and can foreground capacity or successful management. The contrast is a tendency, not an absolute boundary; see ability with قدر.

The following action is bare

The modal predicate has no b-imperfect of its own. Its action complement lacks b- but keeps person, gender, and number.

فينا نلتقي هون بعد الدوام.

fīna niltiʾe hōn baʿd ed-dawēm.

We can meet here after work. (informal; 1pl bare action)

فيك تبعتلي الموقع عالواتساب؟

fīk tibʿatle l-mawʾeʿ ʿal-Wātsāb?

Can you send me the location on WhatsApp? (polite informal request)

If the lower verb takes an object clitic, the object attaches there: فيني شوفه “I can see him/it,” فيها تساعدنا “she can help us.” The suffix on في is not a direct object; it marks the person able.

فيني شوفها الخميس، بس ما فيني اتصل فيها اليوم.

fīne shūfa l-khamīs, bass ma fīne ittiṣel fīha l-yōm.

I can see her on Thursday, but I can't call her today. (informal; object on the lower verb and suffixed preposition)

What a full verb-reference inventory looks like

Because في is grammatical rather than a finite lexical verb, the usual reference slots are supplied analytically or do not exist.

SlotStatusLebanese expression
perfect existential/abilityno synthetic formكان في / كان فيني
b-imperfectnonecurrent في / فيني
bare imperfectnone for فيthe lower action is bare
imperativenoneuse a request or command the action
active participlenoneuse ممكن or an appropriate lexical predicate
direct-object cliticnone on فيattach it to the lower verb

No missing form needs to be “completed” by analogy. Inventing بفي or فيت confuses a grammatical predicate with an ordinary verb.

Negation and questions

Existence and ability both take ما: ما في “there isn't/aren't,” ما فيني “I can't.” With ability, moving ما below the modal changes scope.

في وقت نراجع العقد، بس ما في وقت نعيد التفاوض.

fī waʾt nrēzheʿ el-ʿaʾd, bass ma fī waʾt nʿīd et-tafāwoḍ.

There's time to review the contract, but there isn't time to renegotiate. (professional existential contrast)

ما فيني اترك الولاد هلأ، بس فيني إجي بعد ساعة.

ma fīne itrok el-wlād hallaʾ, bass fīne izhe baʿd sēʿa.

I can't leave the children now, but I can come in an hour. (informal ability contrast)

فيني ما إجي بكرا إذا الاجتماع اختياري؟

fīne ma izhe bokra iza l-izhtimēʿ ikhtiyāre?

Can I not come tomorrow if the meeting is optional? (informal; possibility of nonattendance)

Questions use normal intonation and question words without English do-support: في خبز؟، شو في؟، إمتى فيك تجي؟

شو في بالعلبة، وإمتى فينا نفتحها؟

shū fī bil-ʿelbe, w-ēmta fīna niftaḥa?

What's in the box, and when can we open it? (informal; existential question and ability question)

💡
Negation scope is positional: ما فيني روح denies ability to go; فيني ما روح says not going is an available option.

Past and future frames

Use كان في for past existence and كان في + suffix for past possibility. Use رح يكون في when the existence or availability itself lies in the future.

كان في موقف فاضي، بس ما كان فينا نوصل له من هالطريق.

kēn fī mawʾef fāḍe, bass ma kēn fīna nōṣal lo min hal-ṭarīʾ.

There was an empty parking space, but we couldn't reach it from this road. (informal; past existence and possibility)

بكرا رح يكون في طبيب بالمركز من الصبح.

bokra raḥ ykūn fī ṭabīb bil-markaz min eṣ-ṣoboḥ.

Tomorrow there will be a doctor at the center from the morning. (neutral; future existence)

Dialogue: availability and permission

في مجال نأخر الموعد نص ساعة؟

fī mazhāl nʾakhkher el-mawʿed noṣṣ sēʿa?

Lina: Is it possible to delay the appointment by half an hour? (polite professional dialogue)

إيه، فينا نأخره، بس بعد الستة ما في حدا بالمكتب.

ē, fīna nʾakhkhro, bass baʿd es-sitte ma fī ḥada bil-maktab.

Rami: Yes, we can delay it, but after six there won't be anyone in the office. (professional dialogue; ability and negative existence)

Common Mistakes

Agreeing existential في with a plural

❌ فيوا ناس ناطرين برا.

Incorrect — existential في is invariant; plural belongs to the following noun.

✅ في ناس ناطرين برا.

fī nēs nāṭrīn barra.

There are people waiting outside.

Dropping the ability suffix

❌ في روح هلأ.

Incorrect for ‘I can go’ — bare في is existential; ability needs فيني.

✅ فيني روح هلأ إذا خلصنا.

fīne rūḥ hallaʾ iza khalaṣna.

I can leave now if we're finished.

Keeping b- on the modal complement

❌ فيكن بتدفعوا بالكرت.

Incorrect — suffixed في selects bare تدفعوا.

✅ فيكن تدفعوا بالكرت أو كاش.

fīkon tidfaʿo bil-kart aw kēsh.

You can pay by card or cash.

Using مش for neutral nonexistence

❌ مش في خبز بالبيت.

Incorrect in the neutral baseline — existential negation is ما في.

✅ ما في خبز بالبيت، جيب معك ربطة.

ma fī khobez bil-bēt, zhīb maʿak rabṭa.

There's no bread at home; bring a bag with you.

Key Takeaways

Invariant existential في introduces available entities; locative في / بـ places something inside a location; suffixed فيني، فيك، فيها... expresses situational ability. None is an ordinary finite verb. Use ما في, كان في, and رح يكون في for polarity and time, and put agreement and object clitics on the lower bare action where they belong.
