Existential في tells the listener that someone or something exists, is present, or is available: في قهوة “there is coffee,” في كرسي فاضي “there is an empty chair.” It is a fixed item: it does not change for singular, plural, masculine, or feminine pivots.
English uses the dummy subject there plus agreeing is/are. Lebanese uses neither part of that pattern. في carries the existential frame, while the noun phrase after it—the pivot—names what is being introduced.
The basic pattern: في plus a new entity
The most neutral existential introduces an indefinite or discourse-new pivot.
| Pattern | Example | Use |
|---|---|---|
| في + mass noun | في مي | some water is present |
| في + singular count noun | في كرسي | a chair is present |
| في + plural noun | في كراسي | chairs are present |
| في + person | في حدا | someone is present |
في قهوة سخنة إذا بدك.
fī ʾahwe sokhne iza baddak.
There's hot coffee if you want some. (informal; mass-noun pivot)
في كرسي فاضي حد الشباك.
fī korse fāḍe ḥadd esh-shobbēk.
There's an empty chair next to the window. (informal; singular indefinite pivot)
في ولاد ناطرين برا.
fī wlēd nāṭrīn barra.
There are children waiting outside. (informal; plural human pivot)
Build from short to expanded
The pivot can be expanded with an adjective, number, relative clause, or location. Each addition narrows what is being introduced.
في قهوة.
fī ʾahwe.
There's coffee. (short existential)
في قهوة طازة.
fī ʾahwe ṭāze.
There's fresh coffee. (pivot expanded by an adjective)
في قهوة طازة بالمطبخ الصغير.
fī ʾahwe ṭāze bil-maṭbakh eṣ-zghīr.
There's fresh coffee in the small kitchen. (location added)
Notice the location phrase بالمطبخ. In the active Beirut baseline, a full location noun takes attached بـ. Existential في introduces the coffee; it does not double as the full-noun preposition in. The distinction is developed on the في page.
The pivot is usually indefinite or new
Existential sentences answer questions such as “Is anything available?” or “What is there?” They therefore favor a pivot that is not yet established.
في صيدلية فاتحة بهالحي؟
fī ṣaydaliyye fētḥa b-hal-ḥayy?
Is there a pharmacy open in this neighborhood? (informal; availability question)
في حدا بيعرف يصلح هالآلة؟
fī ḥada byaʿref yṣalleḥ hal-āle?
Is there anyone who knows how to fix this machine? (informal; human pivot with a modifying clause)
Once a particular entity is known, make that entity the topic and give its location directly: الصيدلية بهالشارع “the pharmacy is on this street.” Using existential في with a familiar definite noun can be possible in special list, reminder, or availability contexts, but it is not the neutral beginner answer to “where is the known thing?”
في ملف جديد عالطاولة.
fī malaff zhdīd ʿaṭ-ṭāwle.
There's a new file on the table. (a file is introduced)
الملف الجديد عالطاولة.
el-malaff el-zhdīd ʿaṭ-ṭāwle.
The new file is on the table. (an identifiable file is located)
English uses there is in the first and is in the second. Lebanese makes the more revealing contrast: existential في versus a known topic plus a locative predicate.
Word order: existence first or location first
The neutral order في + pivot + location announces an entity and then locates it. A fronted location establishes a search area first and is natural when the place is already under discussion.
في فرن جديد بآخر الشارع.
fī foron zhdīd b-ākhir esh-shēreʿ.
There's a new bakery at the end of the street. (entity-first presentation)
بآخر الشارع في فرن بيفتح طول الليل.
b-ākhir esh-shēreʿ fī foron byiftaḥ ṭūl el-lēl.
At the end of the street there's a bakery that stays open all night. (location framed first)
The fronted location is not a subject, and it does not make في agree. It simply narrows the domain in which the speaker asserts existence.
في never agrees with its pivot
Whether the pivot is one object, many people, or an uncountable substance, the form remains في.
في رسالة وحدة باسمك.
fī risēle waḥde b-ismak.
There's one message in your name. (singular feminine pivot)
في خمس رسايل جديدة عالإيميل.
fī khames rasēyel zhdīde ʿal-īmēl.
There are five new messages in the email. (plural pivot; invariant في)
في مي كفاية للكل.
fī mayy kifēye lal-kill.
There's enough water for everyone. (mass pivot; invariant في)
Adjectives and participles inside the pivot still agree with their noun: رسالة وحدة, ولاد ناطرين. The absence of agreement belongs only to existential في.
Negation: ما في
Neutral nonexistence or unavailability is ما في. ما scopes over the existential frame as a unit.
في طاولة فاضية حد الباب.
fī ṭāwle fāḍye ḥadd el-bēb.
There's an empty table next to the door. (affirmative existence)
ما في طاولة فاضية حد الباب.
ma fī ṭāwle fāḍye ḥadd el-bēb.
There isn't an empty table next to the door. (negative existence)
ما في وقت ننطر أكتر.
ma fī waʾet ninṭor aktar.
There's no time for us to wait longer. (informal; unavailable time)
مش في is not the neutral existential negation. The complete scope patterns and contrastive exceptions belong on the ما في page.
Past and future existence
To move the existential into another time, add a time-framing form of كان outside في. The existential itself remains unchanged.
كان في سوق صغير هون قبل عشر سنين.
kēn fī sūʾ zghīr hōn ʾabel ʿashar snīn.
There was a small market here ten years ago. (informal; past existence)
بكرا رح يكون في باص زيادة عالخط.
bokra raḥ ykūn fī bāṣ zyēde ʿal-khaṭṭ.
Tomorrow there will be an extra bus on the route. (informal; future existence)
The singular masculine shape كان / يكون frames the proposition; it does not agree with سوق or باص as though that pivot were an ordinary preverbal subject.
Situational dialogue: finding a place to work
في محل هادي نقعد فيه ساعتين؟
fī maḥall hēde niʾʿod fī sēʿtēn?
Is there a quiet place where we can sit for two hours? (informal; existential question with locative resumption)
إيه، في قهوة زغيرة ورا المكتبة.
ē, fī ʾahwe zghīre wara l-maktabe.
Yes, there's a small café behind the library. (informal; new place introduced)
وفيها طاولات برا؟
w-fiyya ṭāwlēt barra?
And does it have tables outside? (informal; suffixed locative فيها with h-loss in pronunciation)
في طاولتين، بس ما في كهربا برا.
fī ṭāwltēn, bass ma fī kahraba barra.
There are two tables, but there's no electricity outside. (informal; count and mass pivots)
The third turn uses suffixed فيها, pronounced fiyya in the course baseline, because “the café” is already a pronominal container. Bare في in the other turns is existential. They belong to related but distinct systems.
Common Mistakes
Making في agree like English “is/are”
❌ فيوا تلات كراسي فاضيين.
Incorrect — existential في is invariant and takes no plural ending.
✅ في تلات كراسي فاضيين حد الحيط.
fī tlēt karāse fāḍyīn ḥadd el-ḥēṭ.
There are three empty chairs next to the wall.
Negating existence with مش
❌ مش في خبز طازة اليوم.
Incorrect neutral existential negation — use ما في.
✅ ما في خبز طازة بهالمحل اليوم.
ma fī khobez ṭāze b-hal-maḥall el-yōm.
There isn't any fresh bread in this shop today.
Adding a dummy subject for English “there”
❌ هو في موقف قريب.
Wrong for 'there is a nearby parking lot' — هو means 'he' and creates a different sentence.
✅ في موقف قريب من هون.
fī mawʾef ʾrīb min hōn.
There's a parking lot near here.
Using existential order to locate a known object
❌ في المفتاح بالدرج.
Wrong for the neutral answer 'the key is in the drawer' — the definite key is already identifiable.
✅ المفتاح بالدرج التحتاني.
el-miftēḥ bid-darzh et-taḥtēne.
The key is in the bottom drawer.
Stacking spoken and formal existential strategies
❌ في توجد صيدلية فاتحة هون؟
Incorrect blend — use either the spoken existential or a fully formal construction, not both together.
✅ في صيدلية فاتحة قريب من هون؟
fī ṣaydaliyye fētḥa ʾrīb min hōn?
Is there a pharmacy open near here? (informal)
Key Takeaways
- Invariant في introduces an entity or availability; it never agrees with the following noun.
- New pivots are normally indefinite, while an identifiable entity is better made the topic of a location sentence.
- Use ما في for nonexistence, كان في for past existence, and رح يكون في for future existence.
