Lebanese nonhuman plurals do not have one mechanically fixed agreement pattern. Speakers can package a set as a grouped class or batch and use feminine-singular agreement, or track salient members individually and use plural agreement. The choice can appear repeatedly: on an attributive adjective, verb, predicate, independent pronoun, and attached suffix.
Formal Arabic makes feminine-singular agreement categorical with nonhuman plurals. Urban Lebanese preserves that strategy but also has productive plural agreement. Calling the plural option “bad Arabic” erases the spoken grammar; copying English plural agreement everywhere erases the grouped option. The noun-phrase side of the contrast is developed in nonhuman plural adjectives.
The grouped feminine-singular package
Feminine-singular agreement is natural when a plural denotes a category, inventory, shipment, condition, or set treated as one discourse unit.
المواعيد الجديدة تغيرت كلها.
el-mawāʿīd el-zhdīde tghayyarit killa.
All the new appointments changed. (grouped feminine-singular adjective, verb, and كلها)
العلب الصغيرة وصلت وهي مسكرة.
el-ʿolab ez-zghīre wiṣlit w-hiyye msakkra.
The small boxes arrived, and they're closed. (one grouped shipment; feminine-singular chain)
الأخبار الجديدة مهمة للشركة.
el-akhbār el-zhdīde mhemme lash-sharike.
The new information is important for the company. (abstract plural packaged as a category)
The noun remains morphologically plural. الجديدة، تغيرت، هي، مسكرة، كلها do not turn it into a singular noun; they signal a grouped construal at each agreement site.
Plural agreement individuates the members
Plural agreement is especially natural with a demonstrative, exact visible set, spatially separated objects, familiar animals, or items being handled one by one.
هالمفاتيح الصغار ضايعين، فتش عليهن منيح.
hal-mafātīḥ ez-zghār ḍāyʿīn, fattesh ʿalēhon mnīḥ.
These small keys are missing; look carefully for them. (salient individual objects; plural agreement and suffix)
الكراسي يلي طلبناهن طلعوا واطيين.
el-karēse yalle ṭlabnēhon ṭilʿo wāṭyīn.
The chairs we ordered turned out to be low. (specific inspected items; plural verb and predicate)
قطط الجيران جوعانين وعم بيمووا عالباب.
ʾṭaṭ el-zhīrān zhūʿānīn w-ʿam byimawwo ʿal-bēb.
The neighbors' cats are hungry and meowing at the door. (animate, individuated nonhuman plural)
Animals are nonhuman grammatically, but pets and visible animals are readily treated as separate actors. Animacy, familiarity, and agency favor plural agreement; none creates a categorical exception.
Agreement can spread across several surfaces
The following table compares coherent grouped and individuated packages. It is a guide to the connections, not a ban on shifts during a longer discourse.
| Agreement site | Grouped feminine singular | Individuated plural |
|---|---|---|
| attributive adjective | الطلبات الجديدة | هالطلبات الجداد |
| perfect verb | وصلت | وصلوا |
| predicate | كاملة | كاملين |
| independent pronoun | هي | هني |
| suffix / “all” | ـها / كلها | ـهن / كلن |
الطلبات الجديدة وصلت كاملة، وحطيتها عالمكتب.
eṭ-ṭalabāt el-zhdīde wiṣlit kēmle, w-ḥaṭṭēta ʿal-maktab.
The new orders arrived complete, and I put the batch on the desk. (grouped feminine-singular package)
هالطلبات الجداد وصلوا كاملين، وحطيتن عالمكتب.
haṭ-ṭalabāt el-zhdēd wiṣlo kēmlīn, w-ḥaṭṭēton ʿal-maktab.
These new orders arrived complete, and I put them on the desk. (individuated plural package)
English uses plural they/them in both contexts. Lebanese agreement lets speakers make the grouping distinction overt.
Lexical habits matter
Construal is important, but it is not the only factor. Some nouns and predicates are strongly associated with institutional or class-level feminine-singular phrasing; others occur frequently with plural forms in practical handling contexts. Available adjective morphology also matters.
الأسعار الجديدة بعدها عالية.
el-asʿār el-zhdīde baʿda ʿālye.
The new prices are still high. (economic category; grouped feminine singular)
هالرفوف مش ثابتين، لازم نربطن بالحيط.
har-rfūf mish thābtīn, lāzem nirboṭon bil-ḥēṭ.
These shelves aren't stable; we need to fasten them to the wall. (particular physical objects; plural agreement)
There is no suffix on the noun that predicts the answer. Broken plurals and ـات plurals both participate in the two strategies. Learners need exposure to phrases, not a chart that claims context never matters.
Word order changes information structure, not the inventory of options
A preverbal nonhuman subject can be the established topic; a postverbal subject can enter with an event report. In conversational Lebanese, either position can occur with an individuated plural package.
شو صار بالطلبات؟ هالطلبات الجداد وصلوا كاملين.
shū ṣār biṭ-ṭalabāt? haṭ-ṭalabāt el-zhdēd wiṣlo kēmlīn.
What happened with the orders? These new orders arrived complete. (topic-first, individuated plural)
شو وصل اليوم؟ وصلوا هالطلبات الجداد كاملين.
shū wiṣel el-yōm? wiṣlo haṭ-ṭalabāt el-zhdēd kēmlīn.
What arrived today? These new orders arrived complete. (event-first, individuated plural)
The formal MSA rule of singular verbal agreement before a plural subject is a separate register system. Do not combine that VSO rule with Lebanese nonhuman variation and call the result one universal “Arabic” rule.
A construal can shift as the discourse develops
Speakers often introduce a shipment as one batch and then manipulate particular pieces. The resulting change from feminine singular to plural can be meaningful rather than careless.
الطرود وصلت، وبعد ما فتحتن لقيت اتنين ناقصين.
eṭ-ṭrūd wiṣlit, w-baʿd ma fataḥton lʾēt itnēn nāʾṣīn.
The packages arrived as a shipment, and after I opened them I found two incomplete. (grouped verb, then individuated plural suffix and predicate)
الصور طلعت حلوة؛ فرجيني ياهن وحدة وحدة.
eṣ-ṣowar ṭilʿit ḥelwe; farzhīne yēhon waḥde waḥde.
The photos turned out nice; show them to me one by one. (grouped evaluation, then plural objects)
Tightly integrated noun phrases often keep one package for processing clarity. Across clauses, a shift is much easier because a new action can highlight the members.
Dialogue: choosing chairs one by one
وصلت الكراسي الجديدة؟
wiṣlit el-karēse l-zhdīde?
Nour: Did the new chairs arrive? (grouped shipment question)
إيه، وصلت، بس بعدني ما فتشت عليهن.
ē, wiṣlit, bass baʿdne ma fattasht ʿalēhon.
Rami: Yes, they arrived, but I haven't inspected them yet. (grouped answer, then plural inspected items)
شوفهن وحدة وحدة لأنو اتنين منن كانوا مخدوشين.
shūfon waḥde waḥde laʾanno itnēn minnon kēno makhdūshīn.
Nour: Check them one by one, because two of them were scratched.
ماشي، الجداد بحطن لحالن.
mēshe, l-zhdēd bḥoṭṭon laḥālon.
Rami: Okay, I'll put the new ones by themselves. (plural adjective ellipsis and plural suffixes)
Common Mistakes
Applying feminine-singular agreement to a human plural
❌ الموظفين الجديدة وصلت.
Incorrect — a human plural normally takes plural adjective and verb agreement.
✅ الموظفين الجداد وصلوا عالوقت.
el-mwaẓẓafīn el-zhdēd wiṣlo ʿal-waʾet.
The new employees arrived on time. (human plural agreement)
Using masculine singular as a default
❌ المواعيد الجديد تغير.
Incorrect — a nonhuman plural can take feminine singular or plural agreement, not an unrelated masculine singular chain.
✅ المواعيد الجديدة تغيرت هالأسبوع.
el-mawāʿīd el-zhdīde tghayyarit hal-osbūʿ.
The new appointments changed this week. (grouped feminine-singular agreement)
Copying English plural agreement into every context
❌ كل جمع غير عاقل لازم ياخد جمع لأنو بالإنجليزي منقول they.
Incorrect rule — Lebanese has a productive grouped feminine-singular strategy.
✅ الشحنات المطلوبة وصلت بكير عالشركة.
esh-shiḥnāt el-maṭlūbe wiṣlit bkīr ʿash-sharike.
The requested shipments arrived at the company early. (grouped batch)
Treating the formal rule as the only spoken option
❌ كل جمع غير عاقل لازم يكون مؤنث مفرد حتى بالحكي اليومي.
Incorrect claim — everyday Lebanese also allows plural agreement with salient members.
✅ هالشناتي الجداد تقال، ساعدني فيهن.
hash-shanēte l-zhdēd tʾāl, sāʿedne fīhon.
These new suitcases are heavy; help me with them. (informal individuated plural)
Key Takeaways
Grouped nonhuman plurals can trigger feminine-singular agreement across adjectives, verbs, predicates, pronouns, and suffixes. Individuated or animate members can trigger plural agreement across the same sites. Demonstratives, exact sets, visible separation, and hands-on actions favor individuation, while categories and batches favor grouping; lexical habit and register also matter. Formal MSA makes feminine singular categorical, but conversational Lebanese does not.
