Collective and quantified subjects force Lebanese speakers to choose between grammatical form and conceptual number. العيلة “the family” is grammatically feminine singular, but it contains several people. مجموعة من الطلاب “a group of students” has a feminine-singular head, while الطلاب names plural members. تلات طلاب “three students” is transparently plural in meaning and normally takes plural agreement.
There is no one rule saying “agree with the nearest noun” or “always follow the English meaning.” Speakers can present a group as one unit and then shift to its members. The controlling choice is visible across the verb, predicate, pronoun, and words such as كلها/كلن.
A collective can be one unit
Nouns such as فريق “team,” عيلة “family,” لجنة “committee,” and مجموعة “group” are singular nouns. When the organization or group acts as one unit, singular agreement matches the noun’s lexical gender.
الفريق جاهز يقدم العرض.
el-farīʾ zhēhez yʾaddem el-ʿareḍ.
The team is ready to give the presentation. (team construed as one masculine-singular unit)
العيلة وصلت علبنان مبارح.
el-ʿayle wiṣlit ʿa-Libnēn mbēreḥ.
The family arrived in Lebanon yesterday. (feminine-singular collective agreement)
اللجنة قررت تأجل الجلسة.
el-lazhne ʾarrarit tʾazhzhil el-zhelse.
The committee decided to postpone the session. (institution acting as one unit)
English also varies between singular and plural with collectives, especially across dialects (the team is/are). Lebanese adds grammatical gender: singular فريق selects masculine جاهز, while singular عيلة and لجنة select feminine وصلت، قررت.
The same discourse can shift to the members
Once individual members become relevant, plural continuation is natural. This is semantic agreement, not a contradiction.
العيلة وصلت، وبعد شوي قعدوا كلن عالسفرة.
el-ʿayle wiṣlit, w-baʿd shwayy ʾaʿado killon ʿas-sofra.
The family arrived, and a little later they all sat at the table. (unit agreement, then member-level plural continuation)
الفريق ربح المباراة، وهلق عم بيحتفلوا بالملعب.
el-farīʾ ribeḥ el-mobārā, w-hallaʾ ʿam byiḥtiflo bil-malʿab.
The team won the match, and now they're celebrating at the stadium. (singular team event, then plural members)
المجموعة وصلت بكير، بس هني بعدن ناطرين الدليل.
el-mazhmūʿa wiṣlit bkīr, bass hinne baʿdon nāṭrīn ed-dalīl.
The group arrived early, but they're still waiting for the guide. (feminine-singular head, plural human resumption)
The first clause packages the family, team, or group as one arrival or result. The next clause opens that package and tracks the people. Pronoun continuation therefore reveals the current construal.
Some collective-looking nouns are lexically plural
Not every word referring to a group is grammatically singular. الناس “people” normally takes plural agreement in urban Lebanese.
الناس عم بينطروا قدام الباب.
en-nēs ʿam byinṭaro ʾoddēm el-bēb.
People are waiting in front of the door. (lexically plural human agreement)
العالم سألوا عن الموعد الجديد.
el-ʿālam saʾalo ʿan el-mawʿed el-zhdīd.
People asked about the new appointment. (informal Lebanese collective expression with plural human agreement)
Agreement is partly lexical: learn العيلة وصلت alongside الناس وصلوا, rather than translating both from English people/family and guessing.
Numeral phrases agree with what is being counted
An exact numeral plus a human plural denotes several individuals and normally takes plural agreement. Word order does not license a formal-Arabic singular verb in ordinary Lebanese.
تلات موظفين وصلوا قبل المدير.
tlēt mwaẓẓafīn wiṣlo ʾabel el-mdīr.
Three employees arrived before the manager. (human quantified subject; plural agreement)
وصلوا تلات موظفين قبل ما نفتح.
wiṣlo tlēt mwaẓẓafīn ʾabel ma niftaḥ.
Three employees arrived before we opened. (verb-first; full colloquial plural agreement)
With nonhuman counted nouns, feminine-singular grouping and plural individuation remain available. The numeral makes the members salient, so plural agreement is often easy, but it does not erase lexical and register preferences.
تلات طرود وصلوا اليوم، وفتحتن واحد واحد.
tlēt ṭrūd wiṣlo l-yōm, w-fataḥton wāḥad wāḥad.
Three packages arrived today, and I opened them one by one. (individuated nonhuman plural agreement)
The alternative تلات طرود وصلت اليوم is also possible when the packages are treated as one shipment (informal variation: construal-dependent). This is discussed systematically on nonhuman plural agreement.
Partitives: identify the grammatical head
Expressions such as “one of,” “half of,” “most of,” and “a group of” differ structurally. واحد من الطلاب has singular head واحد, while أغلب الطلاب commonly denotes the student majority and favors plural human agreement.
| Subject phrase | Natural agreement | Why |
|---|---|---|
| واحد من الطلاب | وصل wiṣel | one individual is the head |
| مجموعة من الطلاب | وصلت wiṣlit | feminine-singular head مجموعة |
| نص الطلاب | وصلوا wiṣlo | the relevant half consists of people |
| أغلب الموظفين | وافقوا wēfaʾo | human majority construed as members |
| كل العيلة | إجت izhit | كل quantifies the singular collective العيلة |
واحد من الطلاب نسي بطاقته بالصف.
wāḥad min eṭ-ṭollēb nise bṭāʾto biṣ-ṣaff.
One of the students forgot his card in the classroom. (singular head واحد)
أغلب الموظفين وافقوا عالخطة.
aghlab el-mwaẓẓafīn wēfaʾo ʿal-khoṭṭa.
Most of the employees agreed to the plan. (semantic human plural agreement)
مجموعة من الطلاب وصلت، وبعدين بلشوا يسألوا أسئلة.
mazhmūʿa min eṭ-ṭollēb wiṣlit, w-baʿdēn ballasho yisʾalo asʾile.
A group of students arrived, and then they started asking questions. (head agreement followed by member-level continuation)
There is genuine variation with proportional quantifiers and collectives. The table gives robust baseline choices, not a claim that every speaker resolves every complex quantified phrase identically.
Topic-first and event-first order
Collective agreement stays tied to the controller while word order changes information structure.
شو عملت العيلة؟ العيلة وصلت بكير.
shū ʿimlit el-ʿayle? el-ʿayle wiṣlit bkīr.
What did the family do? The family arrived early. (family as established topic)
شو صار؟ وصلت العيلة بكير.
shū ṣār? wiṣlit el-ʿayle bkīr.
What happened? The family arrived early. (event-first presentation)
Both use feminine-singular agreement with العيلة. Moving the subject after the verb does not automatically trigger the formal VSO agreement system.
Dialogue: one group, then its members
وصلت المجموعة يلي من طرابلس؟
wiṣlit el-mazhmūʿa yalle men Ṭrāblos?
Rami: Did the group from Tripoli arrive?
إيه، وصلت، وهني هلق عم بيشربوا قهوة برا.
ē, wiṣlit, w-hinne hallaʾ ʿam byishrabo ʾahwe barra.
Maya: Yes, it arrived, and they're drinking coffee outside now. (unit, then members)
قديش واحد معن؟
ʾaddēsh wāḥad maʿon?
Rami: How many people are with them?
معن تمان أشخاص، وكلن جاهزين.
maʿon tmēn ashkhāṣ, w-killon zhēhzīn.
Maya: There are eight people with them, and they're all ready. (plural human continuation)
Common Mistakes
Agreeing with the plural complement of واحد
❌ واحد من الطلاب نسوا البطاقة.
Incorrect — the head is singular واحد, not plural الطلاب.
✅ واحد من الطلاب نسي بطاقته.
wāḥad min eṭ-ṭollēb nise bṭāʾto.
One of the students forgot his card.
Importing formal singular VSO agreement into a numeral phrase
❌ وصل تلات موظفين عالاجتماع.
Incorrect for the ordinary Beirut baseline — the human plural quantified subject takes plural agreement.
✅ وصلوا تلات موظفين عالاجتماع.
wiṣlo tlēt mwaẓẓafīn ʿal-izhtimēʿ.
Three employees arrived at the meeting.
Ignoring the collective noun's gender
❌ العيلة وصل بكير.
Incorrect with singular unit agreement — feminine العيلة requires وصلت.
✅ العيلة وصلت بكير عالفندق.
el-ʿayle wiṣlit bkīr ʿal-fondoʾ.
The family arrived at the hotel early.
Mixing a plural member construal with singular كله
❌ الفريق قعدوا كله حد بعض.
Incorrect agreement package — plural قعدوا referring to the members requires plural كلن.
✅ الفريق قعدوا كلن حد بعض.
el-farīʾ ʾaʿado killon ḥadd baʿeḍ.
The team members all sat beside one another. (semantic plural agreement)
Key Takeaways
Singular collective nouns can take singular grammatical agreement when the group acts as one unit. A following clause may switch naturally to plural agreement when it tracks the members. Exact human numeral phrases take plural agreement; واحد من... remains singular; and partitives such as أغلب الموظفين commonly follow the conceptual plurality. Learn lexical collectives such as العيلة and الناس with their ordinary agreement, and use pronoun continuation to make a construal shift clear.
