Nonhuman plural nouns have two living agreement strategies in Lebanese. A speaker can package the referents as a group with feminine-singular agreement—الكتب الجديدة غالية “the new books are expensive”—or foreground separate, salient items with plural agreement—هالكتب الجداد غاليين “these new books are expensive.”
Formal Arabic teaches feminine-singular “deflected agreement” as a rule for nonhuman plurals. That pattern is important in Lebanese too, but it is not the only conversational option. Urban Beirut speech also uses plural adjectives, verbs, and pronouns when the members of the set are individuated, visible, animate, or contrastively selected.
The grouped feminine-singular strategy
Feminine-singular agreement is especially natural with kinds, generalizations, inventories, and sets treated as one category or condition.
الكتب الجديدة غالية هالسنة.
el-ktob el-zhdīde ghālye hal-sane.
New books are expensive this year. (informal; class-level grouped agreement)
السيارات الجديدة بعدها غالية.
es-sayyārāt el-zhdīde baʿda ghālye.
New cars are still expensive. (informal; generic nonhuman class)
الطلبات الجديدة وصلت كاملة.
eṭ-ṭalabāt el-zhdīde wiṣlet kēmle.
The new orders arrived complete. (informal; orders treated as one batch)
The feminine singular can appear on the attributive adjective, predicate, verb, and resumptive pronoun: الجديدة، غالية، وصلت، بعدها. The nouns themselves remain plural. This is semantic agreement at the clause level, not a claim that كتب or سيارات has become singular.
Plural agreement foregrounds the members
Conversational Lebanese readily uses plural agreement when particular objects are visible, counted, contrasted, spatially distributed, or affected separately.
هالتلفونات الجداد غاليين، بس لازم نشتريهن.
hal-tilifōnāt el-zhdēd ghālyīn, bass lāzem nishtirīhon.
These new phones are expensive, but we have to buy them. (informal; salient individual objects)
الكراسي الجداد محطوطين حد الشباك.
el-karēse l-zhdēd maḥṭūṭīn ḥadd esh-shobbēk.
The new chairs are placed beside the window. (informal; visible individuated set)
جبت تلات كاسات، وكلن مكسورين من الطرف.
zhebt tlēt kēsāt, w-killon maksūrīn mn eṭ-ṭaraf.
I brought three glasses, and all of them are chipped at the edge. (informal; separately inspected items)
Demonstrative هالـ, an exact numeral, plural pronoun كلن, and a visible location all encourage individuation. None mechanically forces plural agreement, but together they make it natural.
A mini-paradigm plus the nonhuman split
The adjective جديد has distinct singular and plural forms. Human plurals strongly select جداد; nonhuman plurals can select جديدة or جداد according to construal.
| Phrase | Adjective form | Agreement value |
|---|---|---|
| كتاب جديد | جديد zhdīd | masculine singular |
| سيارة جديدة | جديدة zhdīde | feminine singular |
| موظفين جداد | جداد zhdēd | human plural |
| كتب جديدة | جديدة zhdīde | nonhuman plural, grouped |
| هالكتب الجداد | جداد zhdēd | nonhuman plural, individuated |
The choice of agreement does not change definiteness. الكتب الجديدة and هالكتب الجداد both have definite attributive adjectives with the article.
Human plurals provide the stable contrast
With people, plural agreement is the ordinary Beirut pattern. Compare a group of employees with a batch of orders.
الموظفين الجداد وصلوا جاهزين.
el-mwaẓẓafīn el-zhdēd wiṣlo zhēhzīn.
The new employees arrived ready. (informal; human plural throughout)
الطرود الجديدة وصلت جاهزة.
eṭ-ṭorūd el-zhdīde wiṣlet zhēhze.
The new packages arrived ready. (informal; nonhuman batch, feminine singular throughout)
Feminine-singular agreement is not an all-purpose “plural rule.” Human nouns normally require plural adjectives, verbs, and pronouns. The detailed human system is on Agreement with Human Plurals.
Animacy and personification favor plural agreement
Animals occupy a useful middle ground. When discussed as a species, a nonhuman plural can be grouped; when familiar animals are acting as individuals, plural agreement becomes especially natural.
الكلاب الأليفة بدها اهتمام.
el-klēb el-alīfe badda ihtimēm.
Pet dogs need attention. (generic class; feminine singular agreement)
كلابي تعبانين من المشي وبدهن مي.
klēbe taʿbānīn mn el-mashe w-baddon mayy.
My dogs are tired from walking and want water. (informal; familiar individual animals, plural agreement)
This is a tendency, not a biological boundary. Speaker relationship, narrative personification, and what the animals are doing can outweigh taxonomy.
Lexical choice matters
Some adjectives have a very available plural form, particularly colors and physical states, so plural agreement is easy to produce: الكراسي البيض “the white chairs,” الأبواب مسكرين “the doors are shut.” Other descriptions are habitually heard in feminine singular with a grouped noun. Fixed product categories and institutional phrasing can preserve one strategy even where another would be grammatically possible.
هالأبواب التقال مسكرين منيح.
hal-abwēb et-tʾāl msakkarīn mnīḥ.
These heavy doors are shut properly. (informal; salient plural objects)
الأبواب الزجاجية غالية.
el-abwēb ez-zizhēzhiyye ghālye.
Glass doors are expensive. (neutral; product class with feminine singular agreement)
The relational adjective زجاجية and class-level predicate favor a category reading. There is no single suffix or noun shape that predicts every choice.
Keep one construal coherent
A speaker can shift construal within a conversation, but a tightly integrated description normally aligns its adjective, verb, predicate, and pronoun.
| Grouped package | Individuated package |
|---|---|
| الطلبات الجديدة وصلت كاملة | هالطلبات الجداد وصلوا كاملين |
| السيارات الجديدة بعدها غالية | هالسيارات الجداد بعدن غاليين |
| الكراسي القديمة مكسرة | هالكراسي القدام مكسورين |
The mixed string هالطلبات الجديدة وصلوا ناقصين is understandable, but it changes agreement strategy inside one compact description. Native speech can contain such shifts; learners gain clearer control by choosing a coherent package first.
MSA is a register contrast, not the source of the spoken rule
(formal/MSA) Formal syntax requires feminine-singular agreement with nonhuman plurals. Lebanese speakers encounter that pattern in school, news, official prose, and formal reading. (informal Beirut) Conversation preserves the feminine-singular strategy but also productively permits plural agreement.
Do not describe conversational plural agreement as “broken MSA,” and do not make casual Lebanese artificially formal by banning it. Conversely, a formal written sentence should not import colloquial plural agreement without a deliberate style shift.
A descriptive dialogue with natural ellipsis
شو رأيك بهالكراسي؟
shū raʾyak b-hal-karēse?
Maya: What do you think of these chairs? (informal dialogue)
الجداد مريحين، بس القدام مكسورين.
el-zhdēd mrīḥīn, bass el-ʾdēm maksūrīn.
Rami: The new ones are comfortable, but the old ones are broken. (informal; plural ellipsis, individuated chairs)
والطاولات الجديدة؟
w-eṭ-ṭāwlāt el-zhdīde?
Maya: And the new tables? (informal; grouped feminine singular attribution)
الجديدة منيحة، مناخدها.
el-zhdīde mnīḥa, mnēkhodha.
Rami: The new ones are good; we'll take them. (informal; grouped feminine singular ellipsis)
The final suffix ـها resumes the tables as a grouped feminine-singular referent. Natural ellipsis retains the chosen agreement strategy even though the plural noun is no longer spoken.
Common Mistakes
Putting the adjective before the noun by English transfer
❌ اشتريت جديدة كتب.
Incorrect as neutral attribution — the adjective follows its noun.
✅ اشتريت كتب جديدة.
ishtarēt ktob zhdīde.
I bought new books. (grouped nonhuman plural)
Dropping the article from a definite adjective
❌ الكتب جديدة غالية.
Incorrect for 'the new books are expensive' — the attributive adjective must be definite.
✅ الكتب الجديدة غالية.
el-ktob el-zhdīde ghālye.
The new books are expensive. (grouped agreement)
Applying feminine singular to humans
❌ الموظفين الجديدة وصلوا.
Incorrect — human plural nouns normally require plural adjective agreement.
✅ الموظفين الجداد وصلوا.
el-mwaẓẓafīn el-zhdēd wiṣlo.
The new employees arrived. (human plural agreement)
Ending a grouped agreement chain in masculine singular
❌ الشحنات الجديدة وصلت كامل.
Incorrect — a grouped nonhuman plural takes feminine-singular agreement throughout, not a masculine-singular predicate.
✅ الشحنات الجديدة وصلت كاملة.
esh-shiḥnāt el-zhdīde wiṣlet kēmle.
The new shipments arrived complete. (grouped feminine-singular agreement throughout)
Treating formal Arabic as the only possible spoken pattern
❌ كل صفة بتوصف جمع غير عاقل لازم تكون مؤنث مفرد بالحكي.
Incorrect claim — conversational Lebanese also permits plural agreement according to construal and usage.
✅ هالكراسي الجداد مريحين.
hal-karēse l-zhdēd mrīḥīn.
These new chairs are comfortable. (informal; individuated plural agreement)
Key Takeaways
Feminine-singular agreement packages a nonhuman plural as a kind, batch, or condition. Plural agreement foregrounds salient members and is especially available with demonstratives, exact sets, familiar animals, and visible contrasts. Lexical habits and speaker style matter, so the distinction is probabilistic. Keep agreement coherent across adjectives, verbs, predicates, and pronouns, and reserve the categorical feminine-singular rule for explicit formal-Arabic comparison.
