Agreement across Long or Interrupted Phrases

In a long Lebanese subject phrase, the noun closest to the verb is not necessarily the agreement controller. In مدير الفروع الجديدة وصل “the manager of the new branches arrived,” plural الفروع is near the verb, but singular masculine مدير is the head and controls وصل. Relative clauses, possessive chains, parenthetical comments, and hesitations increase the planning load, so spontaneous speech may also contain attraction, restarts, and repairs.

This page separates three phenomena that learners often collapse: stable grammatical agreement with the head, licensed semantic agreement with collectives or nonhuman plurals, and a momentary production repair. Formal editing prefers a completed consistent structure; real conversation includes evidence of how speakers build that structure in time.

Find the head, not the nearest noun

Inside a possessive chain, the first noun is normally the head. A following plural possessor does not automatically control a later verb or predicate.

مدير الفروع الجديدة وصل قبل الموظفين.

mdīr el-forūʿ el-zhdīde wiṣel ʾabel el-mwaẓẓafīn.

The manager of the new branches arrived before the employees. (masculine-singular head مدير controls وصل)

صاحبة المحلات القديمة وصلت عالظهر.

ṣāḥbet el-maḥallāt el-ʾdīme wiṣlit ʿaẓ-ẓoher.

The owner of the old shops arrived at noon. (feminine-singular head صاحبة controls وصلت)

عنوان الرسائل الطويلة واضح عالظرف.

ʿinwēn er-rasēyel eṭ-ṭwīle wāḍeḥ ʿaẓ-ẓarf.

The address for the long letters is clear on the envelope. (masculine-singular head عنوان controls واضح)

The adjective الجديدة/القديمة/الطويلة agrees locally with the embedded plural noun under its own agreement pattern. The main predicate still looks upward to the head of the whole subject phrase.

💡
Bracket the phrase before agreeing: [مدير [الفروع الجديدة]] وصل. Local agreement inside the embedded phrase and main-clause agreement with the head can legitimately show different features.

Relative clauses interrupt but do not replace the controller

A relative clause can contain its own subject, verb, and agreement. Once the relative clause closes, the main predicate resumes agreement with the head noun before يلي.

الرسالة يلي كتبوها الموظفين وصلت مبارح.

er-risēle yalle katabūha l-mwaẓẓafīn wiṣlit mbēreḥ.

The letter that the employees wrote arrived yesterday. (main وصلت agrees with feminine الرسالة, not الموظفين)

الموظفين يلي اشتغلوا مع نادين وصلوا عالوقت.

el-mwaẓẓafīn yalle ishtaghalo maʿ Nādīn wiṣlo ʿal-waʾet.

The employees who worked with Nadine arrived on time. (plural head maintained across a singular name)

السيارة يلي صلحها رامي بعدها واقفة برا.

es-sayyāra yalle ṣallaḥa Rāme baʿda wāʾfe barra.

The car that Rami repaired is still parked outside. (feminine head resumed by بعدها and واقفة)

English speakers make agreement-attraction errors such as the key to the cabinets are.... Lebanese speakers can experience the same planning pressure, but the overt gender and number morphology often makes the eventual controller clearer.

Attraction and self-repair in spontaneous speech

When a plural noun has just been spoken, a speaker may begin a plural predicate and then repair it after retrieving the singular head. The repair is evidence of online planning, not a second polished agreement rule.

مدير الفروع الجديدة... وصلوا—قصدي وصل—قبل شوي.

mdīr el-forūʿ el-zhdīde... wiṣlo—ʾaṣde wiṣel—ʾabel shwayy.

The manager of the new branches... they arrived—I mean, he arrived—a little while ago. (natural attraction and immediate repair)

المجموعة تبع المتطوعين كانوا جاهزين... قصدي كانت جاهزة كفريق.

el-mazhmūʿa tabaʿ el-mtaṭawwiʿīn kēno zhēhzīn... ʾaṣde kēnit zhēhze k-farīʾ.

The group of volunteers were ready... I mean, it was ready as a team. (member-level start followed by an explicit shift to unit construal)

In the first example, hesitation, a pause, and قصدي “I mean” expose attraction to the nearer plural noun. The second correction instead changes the intended construal from the members to the group as a unit; its initial plural is grammatical semantic agreement, not evidence that المتطوعين replaced the head. A final edited sentence would normally contain only the form matching the intended construal.

Resumptive topics reduce the memory load

Lebanese often places a long noun phrase as a topic, pauses, and resumes it with a pronoun. The pronoun makes the intended controller explicit before the predicate.

مدير الفروع الجديدة، هو وصل قبل شوي.

mdīr el-forūʿ el-zhdīde, huwwe wiṣel ʾabel shwayy.

The manager of the new branches—he arrived a little while ago. (masculine resumptive topic)

هالمجموعة يلي حكينا عنها، هي جاهزة تبلش.

hal-mazhmūʿa yalle ḥkīna ʿanha, hiyye zhēhze tballesh.

This group we talked about—it's ready to start. (feminine resumptive pronoun resets the head)

الموظفين يلي قبلناهن الأسبوع الماضي، هني رح يبلشوا الاتنين.

el-mwaẓẓafīn yalle ʾbilnēhon el-osbūʿ el-māḍe, hinne raḥ yballsho l-itnēn.

The employees we accepted last week—they'll start Monday. (plural resumption after a long topic)

This is not an obligatory repair device. The pause and pronoun create a left-dislocated topic structure, often useful when the subject is long, contrastive, or being reintroduced. See left dislocation.

💡
In speech, a resumptive هو/هي/هني can function as a planning anchor. It tells the listener which referent is continuing and gives the speaker a fresh local controller for the predicate.

Not every apparent mismatch is attraction

Collectives and nonhuman plurals have genuine semantic agreement options. A plural after a singular collective may intentionally refer to the members; it need not be a slip caused by an intervening plural noun.

العيلة يلي ساكنة حدنا وصلوا كلن عالحفلة.

el-ʿayle yalle sēkne ḥaddna wiṣlo killon ʿal-ḥafle.

The family that lives next door all arrived at the party. (unit-level relative predicate, then member-level plural with كلن)

الطلبات يلي تأخرت وصلت كلها دفعة وحدة.

eṭ-ṭalabāt yalle tʾakhkharit wiṣlit killa dafʿa waḥde.

The orders that were delayed all arrived in one batch. (coherent grouped feminine-singular agreement)

Likewise, إجت رنا وكريم can instantiate licensed first-conjunct agreement with a postverbal coordination. That structural option belongs to coordinated subjects; it should not be mislabeled as accidental attraction.

Compact order versus marked topic resumption

A short head-plus-possessor subject can remain inside one clause. A longer modified subject is often easier to process as a topic followed by a resumptive pronoun.

مدير الفروع وصل بكير.

mdīr el-forūʿ wiṣel bkīr.

The branch manager arrived early. (compact neutral subject–predicate order)

مدير الفروع يلي فتحوا جديد، هو وصل بكير.

mdīr el-forūʿ yalle fataḥo zhdīd, huwwe wiṣel bkīr.

The manager of the branches that opened recently—he arrived early. (long marked topic plus resumption)

The second sentence makes the head easier to recover after an interrupting relative clause. It does not mean that long subjects are forbidden inside a single clause.

Prescriptive editing and real-time conversation

Careful professional writing normally removes abandoned agreement, repetition, and قصدي repairs. Formal MSA additionally imposes its own case, word-order, and nonhuman-plural rules (formal). Edited Lebanese dialogue, messages, and transcripts can preserve a repair when the hesitation itself matters.

Describing repairs is not endorsing every agreement mismatch as a dialect rule. A stable grammar explains the intended endpoint; a usage-based description also explains why speakers momentarily produce a nearer noun’s features.

Dialogue: hearing and resolving a repair

وصلت صاحبة المحلات الجديدة؟

wiṣlit ṣāḥbet el-maḥallāt el-zhdīde?

Maya: Did the owner of the new shops arrive?

إيه، وصلوا... قصدي وصلت، هي لحالها إجت.

ē, wiṣlo... ʾaṣde wiṣlit, hiyye laḥāla izhit.

Rami: Yes, they arrived... I mean, she arrived; she came by herself. (attraction, repair, then explicit feminine resumption)

wil-mwaẓẓafīn tabaʿa?

Maya: And her employees?

هني بيوصلوا بكرا الصبح.

hinne byūṣalo bokra ṣ-ṣobeḥ.

Rami: They'll arrive tomorrow morning. (plural controller explicitly reset)

Common Mistakes

Agreeing with the closest possessor instead of the head

❌ صاحبة المحلات وصلوا عالظهر.

Incorrect without a deliberate member-level construal — plural المحلات does not control the owner’s arrival.

✅ صاحبة المحلات وصلت عالظهر.

ṣāḥbet el-maḥallāt wiṣlit ʿaẓ-ẓoher.

The owner of the shops arrived at noon.

Letting a relative-clause noun replace the main head

❌ الرسالة يلي كتبوها الموظفين وصلوا مبارح.

Incorrect — the main predicate refers to feminine singular الرسالة, not the employees inside the relative clause.

✅ الرسالة يلي كتبوها الموظفين وصلت عالبيت مبارح.

er-risēle yalle katabūha l-mwaẓẓafīn wiṣlit ʿal-bēt mbēreḥ.

The letter that the employees wrote arrived at the house yesterday.

Choosing a resumptive pronoun from the embedded noun

❌ مدير الفروع الجديدة، هي وصلت بكير.

Incorrect — the resumed topic is masculine مدير, not feminine-singular الفروع الجديدة.

✅ مدير الفروع الجديدة، هو وصل بكير.

mdīr el-forūʿ el-zhdīde, huwwe wiṣel bkīr.

The manager of the new branches—he arrived early.

Treating semantic plural agreement as automatically wrong

❌ العيلة يلي ساكنة حدنا وصلوا كلن غلط حتما لأن العيلة مفرد.

Incorrect absolute claim — كلن makes a deliberate shift from the family unit to its members.

✅ العيلة يلي ساكنة حدنا وصلوا كلن سوا.

el-ʿayle yalle sēkne ḥaddna wiṣlo killon sawa.

The family that lives next door all arrived together. (licensed member-level plural agreement)

Applying formal singular VSO agreement after a long human plural

❌ وصل الموظفين يلي قبلناهن الأسبوع الماضي.

Incorrect for the ordinary Beirut baseline — the postverbal human plural keeps plural agreement.

✅ وصلوا الموظفين يلي قبلناهن الأسبوع الماضي.

wiṣlo l-mwaẓẓafīn yalle ʾbilnēhon el-osbūʿ el-māḍe.

The employees we accepted last week arrived.

Key Takeaways

Across a possessive chain or relative clause, main agreement normally targets the head of the whole subject, not the nearest embedded noun. Attraction can appear as a real-time planning slip and is often repaired. A topic-plus-resumptive structure provides a fresh local controller. Do not confuse attraction with licensed collective, nonhuman-plural, or first-conjunct agreement; those are grammatical options with identifiable semantic or structural conditions.
