Greeting and Leave-Taking Sequences

A Lebanese greeting is not a password followed immediately by business. It is a small sequence: an opening receives a return, a check-in receives an answer, and then someone moves into the reason for the encounter. Leave-taking works the same way: announce the closing, exchange a wish or goodbye, and acknowledge it.

This page turns that sequence into productive grammar. The goal is not to memorize twenty translations of English hello and goodbye. It is to combine a small number of frames with correct person, gender, time, relationship, and uptake. The pragmatics of greetings explains the social meanings in greater depth.

The four slots in an opening

An everyday opening can contain four moves. Not every brief encounter needs all four.

MoveUseful frameTypical function
check inكيفك؟ renew the relationship
transitionبدي اسألك... ؟move to the encounter's business

marḥaba yā Zhō, kīfak? badde isʾalak ʿan mawʿed bokra.

Hi Joe, how are you? I want to ask you about tomorrow's appointment. (friendly opening to one man)

ahlēn yā Rīma, shū l-akhbār? kīf esh-shoghl el-zhdīd?

Hi Rima, what's new? How's the new job? (warm familiar opening)

The vocative يا + name is detachable: remove it and the sentence stays grammatical. It identifies and warms the address; it is not the subject of كيفك.

💡
For a safe new-contact sequence, use مرحبا + return + short check-in + purpose. Close friends can shorten, expand, tease, or overlap because the relationship supplies what the words omit.

Collocation table: openings, returns, and closings

These are conventional pairings, not word-for-word equations. The return often changes the noun: “morning of goodness” receives “morning of light.”

ṣabēḥ el-khēr yā ustēz Nabīl, kīfak el-yōm?

Good morning, Mr. Nabil. How are you today? (polite morning opening)

ṣabēḥ en-nūr, el-ḥamdo la-lla mnīḥ. w-inte kīfak?

Good morning. Thank God, I'm well. And how are you? (reciprocal return by a man)

Exact repetition is possible, especially with مرحبا. The listed responses are strong defaults, not tests of cultural authenticity.

كيفك agrees with the addressee; the answer agrees with the speaker

Arabic script writes masculine and feminine كيفك alike, but pronunciation differs: kīfak to a man and kīfik to a woman. The group form is كيفكن kīfkon. In the answer, منيح / منيحة / منيحين describes the person speaking.

kīfik yā Lāra? — mnīḥa, w-inte kīfak?

How are you, Lara? — I'm well; how are you? (woman answering a man)

kīfkon killkon? — mnīḥīn, ishtaʾnēlak.

How are you all? — We're well; we missed you. (group check-in and answer to one man)

A routine كيفك؟ normally receives a brief reciprocal response. A concerned tone or a specific follow-up—كيف صارت ركبتك؟ “how is your knee now?”—invites more detail.

Welcome formulas contain a person slot

أهلا وسهلا welcomes an arrival. Add فيك to one man, فيكي to one woman, and فيكن to a group. Follow it with an agreeing imperative such as

ahla w-sahla fīke yā Hibe, tfaḍḍale fūte.

Welcome, Hiba; please come in. (welcoming one woman)

ahla w-sahla fīkon, tfaḍḍalo oʾʿodo ḥadd esh-shibbēk.

Welcome, everyone; please sit by the window. (welcoming a group)

English “you're welcome” after thanks is a different action. Use a response such as أهلا or ولا يهمك according to context; do not assume every English welcome expands to أهلا وسهلا.

Time-sensitive choices and night-time wishes

صباح الخير and مسا الخير are encounter openings. تصبح على خير is not “good evening”; it wishes someone a good night as they go to sleep or leave late. It agrees: تصبحي to a woman and تصبحوا to a group.

yalla, ṣāret es-sēʿa tnēsh. tiṣbaḥe ʿala khēr.

All right, it's midnight. Good night. (to one woman)

w-inte min ahlo. dīr bālak ʿa-ḥālak biṭ-ṭarīʾ.

Good night to you too. Take care on the way. (reply to one man)

Time labels are socially elastic: workplaces and routines matter more than a rigid clock. When uncertain, مرحبا is always a safe broad opening.

Leave-taking is a transition, not a disappearance

Common closings combine a transition marker such as يلا or طيب, a future-contact frame, and a wish:

طيب، لازم فل. منحكي بكرا الصبح.

ṭayyeb, lāzem fill. mniḥke bokra ṣ-ṣobeḥ.

All right, I have to go. We'll talk tomorrow morning. (ordinary leave-taking)

yalla bshūfak el-khamīs. alla maʿak.

All right, I'll see you Thursday. Goodbye. (to one man)

لازم فل gives the closing a reason without inventing an emergency. منحكي and بشوفك project future contact; they help a goodbye preserve the relationship.

A substitution frame you can extend safely

Use this three-part frame:

مرحبا يا [name/title]، كيف [person/domain]؟ [purpose].

SlotOptions
check-inكيفك؟

marḥaba yā madām, kīfik? ʿinde soʾāl ʿan ed-dawēm.

Hello, ma'am. How are you? I have a question about the opening hours. (polite service frame)

ahlēn yā Sāmer, shū l-akhbār? shū raʾyak nishrab ʾahwe baʿd esh-shoghl?

Hi Samer, what's new? How about coffee after work? (friendly invitation frame)

The frame is safe because each slot performs a visible job. Do not stack every option; one check-in is enough for a brief encounter.

Dialogue 1: entering a neighborhood bakery

yaʿṭīk el-ʿāfye, baʿd fī manʾūshet zaʿtar?

Customer: Hope work is going well. Are there any za'atar flatbreads left? (polite service opening to a man)

alla yʿāfīk, ē baʿd fī. baddak yēha sokhne?

Baker: Thank you; yes, there are. Do you want it hot? (return plus service question)

ē law samaḥt. ysalmo īdēk.

Customer: Yes, please. Thank you. (acceptance and appreciation)

The work greeting يعطيك العافية both opens contact and acknowledges effort. It does not literally ask about health in this use.

Dialogue 2: closing an evening visit

ṭayyeb yā zhamēʿa, lāzem nimshi ʾabel ma yitʾakhkhar el-waʾet aktar.

Guests: All right, everyone, we have to leave before it gets any later.

nawwartūna, l-marra l-zhēye bidkon titʿashsho ʿinna.

Hosts: You brightened our home; next time you must have dinner with us. (warm group leave-taking)

akīd, w-mnḥaddeda min bakkīr. tiṣbaḥo ʿala khēr.

Guests: Definitely, and we'll arrange it early. Good night, everyone.

w-into min ahlo, alla maʿkon.

Hosts: Good night to you too; goodbye. (reply to a group)

The invitation remains warm but open until a date is set. The closing contains mutual acknowledgment, not one speaker walking away after a single bye.

Polite repair when the opening goes wrong

If you miss a name or do not hear the return, repair without pretending:

عفوا، ما سمعت اسمك منيح. فيك تعيده؟

ʿafwan, ma smiʿt ismak mnīḥ. fīk tʿīdo?

Sorry, I didn't hear your name clearly. Could you repeat it? (polite repair to one man)

ḥaʾʾak ʿalayye, kent sarḥēn. masa n-nūr, kīfak?

My fault; I was distracted. Good evening—how are you? (repair after missing a greeting)

Common Mistakes

Copying gender from English, where it is invisible

Agreement error if the woman Nadine is answering—the predicate is masculine.

kīfik yā Nādīn? — ana mnīḥa, w-inte?

How are you, Nadine? — I'm well; and you?

Using a welcome-to-arrival formula after routine thanks

Mismatched action—the reply welcomes an arrival instead of acknowledging the favor just thanked.

shokran innak baʿatle l-malaf. — wala yhimmak, b-ayy waʾet.

Thanks for sending me the file. — No problem, anytime.

Giving a long report to a routine check-in

Overliteral uptake for a brief passing greeting—the answer blocks the expected reciprocal sequence.

kīfak? — mnīḥ el-ḥamdo la-lla, w-inte?

How are you? — Well, thank God; and you?

Translating “good night” as an evening opener

Wrong conversational slot—the sleep-time wish closes an encounter rather than opening a shop inquiry.

masa l-khēr, baʿdkon fātḥīn shī noṣṣ sēʿa?

Good evening. Are you still open for about another half hour?

Key Takeaways

Build greetings as sequences: open, return, check in, and transition. Match كيفك to the addressee and منيح / منيحة / منيحين to the respondent. Use أهلا وسهلا فيك/فيكي/فيكن to welcome an arrival, time-of-day pairs for routine openings, and تصبح على خير for a night-time closing. A short repair is better than skipping the return and rushing into business.
