كيف kīf asks about manner or condition: كيف عملتها؟ “how did you do it?”, كيفك؟ “how are you?”, كيف وصلت؟ “how did you get here?” It can also request clarification in كيف يعني؟ “what do you mean?” and express amazement or objection with the right intonation.
English how covers many jobs too, but Lebanese packages them differently. The verb keeps its normal aspect and agreement, there is no do-support, and context decides whether كيف asks about a method, route, instrument-like means, or resulting state. Compare its discourse position with other forms on wh-word position.
Manner: the way an action happens
Place كيف before a clause for a neutral question about method. It may remain late when the action is already under discussion.
كيف حضرت هالصلصة من دون وصفة؟
kīf ḥaḍḍaret hal-ṣalṣa min dūn waṣfe?
How did you make this sauce without a recipe? (neutral manner question)
كيف بتفتح هيدا البرنامج عالتلفون؟
kīf btiftaḥ hayda l-barnēmazh ʿat-tilifōn?
How do you open this app on the phone? (habitual/procedural question)
قلت إنك صلحته لحالك. صلحته كيف؟
ʾelt innak ṣallaḥto la-ḥālak. ṣallaḥto kīf?
You said you fixed it yourself. How did you fix it? (contextual in-situ manner)
State and greetings
With a pronoun suffix, كيف asks about someone's condition. Ordinary unvocalized writing spells both singular forms كيفك, but speech distinguishes كيفَك؟ kīfak? to one man from كيفِك؟ kīfik? to one woman; كيفكن؟ kīfkon? addresses a group. A specific noun can follow: كيف الشغل؟ “how's work?”
كيفك اليوم بعد السفر الطويل؟
kīfak el-yōm baʿd es-safar eṭ-ṭawīl?
How are you today after the long trip? (informal greeting to one man)
كيفك يا مايا؟ ارتحتي بعد السفر؟
kīfik ya Māya? irtaḥte baʿd es-safar?
How are you, Maya? Did you rest after the trip? (informal greeting to one woman)
منيح الحمد لله، بس بعدني تعبان شوي.
mnīḥ el-ḥamdo lillāh, bass baʿdne taʿbēn shwayy.
Fine, thank God, but I'm still a little tired. (natural short answer, male speaker)
كيف الشغل بالمكتب الجديد؟
kīf esh-shoghol bil-maktab el-zhdīd?
How is work at the new office? (state/evaluation question)
كيفك؟ is often a greeting rather than a request for a medical report. The answer can be brief unless context invites detail.
Transport and instrument-like interpretations
With motion, كيف often asks by what means or along what route someone traveled. Answers use بـ phrases such as بالباص or a fuller manner clause.
كيف وصلتوا عالضيعة بهالشتوية؟
kīf wiṣelto ʿaḍ-ḍayʿa b-hal-shitwiyye?
How did you get to the village in this storm? (means/route question)
طلعنا بالباص، وبعدين مشينا عشر دقايق.
ṭliʿna bil-bāṣ, w-baʿdēn mshīna ʿashar daʾāyeʾ.
We took the bus, then walked ten minutes. (means and route answer)
كيف بعتت الملف، بالإيميل ولا عالواتساب؟
kīf baʿattet el-malaf, bil-īmēl walla ʿal-wātsēb?
How did you send the file, by email or on WhatsApp? (instrument-like channel)
For a concrete tool, بشو can be more specific: بشو فتحتها؟ “what did you open it with?” كيف asks about the broader method; بشو requests the instrument.
كيف يعني and echo questions
كيف يعني؟ asks the speaker to unpack a claim: “how so?” or “what do you mean?” It is not a literal manner question. Strongly stressed كيف؟ can signal that the listener did not hear, cannot reconcile the claim, or objects to it.
قالوا إنو الموعد اختياري. كيف يعني اختياري؟
ʾālo inno l-mawʿed ikhtiyāre. kīf yaʿne ikhtiyāre?
They said the appointment is optional. What do you mean, optional? (clarification request)
كيف؟ بدك تسافر الليلة وما حضرت شنطتك؟
KĪF? baddak tsēfer el-lēle w-ma ḥaḍḍaret shanṭtak?
What? You're traveling tonight and you haven't packed your bag? (incredulous echo)
كيف هيك انلغى الحجز من دون ما يخبرونا؟
kīf hēk inlagha l-ḥazhez min dūn ma ykhabbrūna?
How come the reservation was canceled without them telling us? (objection/surprise)
Exclamative extensions
In expressive speech, كيف can introduce a clause that presents an unexpectedly high degree or striking result. Intonation, context, and often هيك distinguish this from a genuine request for instructions.
يا لطيف، كيف تغير الحي بهالكم سنة!
ya laṭīf, kīf tghayyar el-ḥayy b-hal-kam sane!
Good grief, how the neighborhood has changed in these few years! (expressive framing makes the exclamative reading clear)
شوف كيف صارت السما حمرا قبل الغروب!
shūf kīf ṣāret es-sama ḥamra ʾabel el-ghorūb!
Look how red the sky has become before sunset! (embedded exclamative)
Do not overgeneralize this pattern into formal writing; it is expressive (informal) discourse.
Embedded كيف and a service dialogue
After فرجيني، بعرف، شرح and similar verbs, كيف introduces the manner to be shown or known.
فرجيني كيف بوصل عالإعدادات من هون.
farzhīne kīf būṣal ʿal-iʿdādāt min hūn.
Show me how to get to the settings from here. (embedded manner clause)
كيف فيني رجع هالقميص إذا ما زبط عليي القياس؟
kīf fīne razhzheʿ hal-ʾamīṣ iza ma zabaṭ ʿalayye l-ʾyēs?
Customer: How can I return this shirt if the size doesn't fit me? (service request)
بتجيب الفاتورة وبتتركه عالصندوق.
btizhīb el-fātūra w-btitroko ʿaṣ-ṣondūʾ.
Clerk: You bring the receipt and leave it at the counter. (procedure answer)
وكيف بعرف إذا وصل البديل؟
w-kīf baʿref iza wiṣil el-badīl?
Customer: And how will I know whether the replacement has arrived? (method of notification)
منبعتلك رسالة عالتلفون.
mnibʿatlak risēle ʿat-tilifōn.
Clerk: We'll send you a message on your phone. (practical answer)
Formal Arabic also has كيف (formal), but formal verb forms and vocabulary should not be blended into an otherwise Lebanese sentence. The word is shared; the surrounding grammar identifies the register.
Common Mistakes
❌ كيف عملت حضرت القهوة؟
Incorrect — the extra عملت mechanically copies English do-support.
✅ كيف حضرت القهوة بهالسرعة؟
kīf ḥaḍḍaret el-ʾahwe b-hal-sorʿa?
How did you prepare the coffee so quickly?
❌ كيفك وصلت عالمطار؟
Incorrect — the suffixed greeting كيفك asks about condition, not travel method.
✅ كيف وصلت عالمطار قبل ما تبلش العجقة؟
kīf wiṣelt ʿal-maṭār ʾabel ma tballesh el-ʿazhʾa?
How did you get to the airport before the traffic started?
❌ كيف فتحت العلبة فيه؟
Incorrect for specifically asking which tool was used — use بشو with the preposition attached.
✅ بشو فتحت العلبة من دون مقص؟
b-shū fataḥet el-ʿelbe min dūn maʾaṣṣ?
What did you open the box with without scissors?
❌ كيف يعني؟ يعني بأي وقت؟
Incorrect interpretation — كيف يعني asks for clarification, not for a time.
✅ كيف يعني الموعد مفتوح؟ فيني إجي بأي وقت؟
kīf yaʿne l-mawʿed maftūḥ? fīne izhe b-ayy waʾet?
What do you mean the appointment is open? Can I come at any time?
Key Takeaways
Use كيف for manner, method, condition, and travel means. كيفك؟ is a conventional greeting; كيف يعني؟ requests clarification; stressed كيف؟ can echo or object. Context distinguishes a broad method from a concrete بشو instrument question. The verb retains ordinary Lebanese aspect and agreement, with no English-style do-support.
