English often creates a manner adverb by adding -ly to an adjective: quiet → quietly. Urban Lebanese has no single productive ending that does the same job. It uses several strategies: an invariant adjective-like word such as منيح “well,” a conventional بـ + noun phrase such as بهدوء “calmly,” a lexical adverb such as هيك “like this,” or a fixed repeated expression such as شوي شوي “gradually.”
The honest difficulty is lexical: you cannot predict one correct manner form from every adjective. Learn the common expression together with the action it naturally describes, then place it close to that action unless you deliberately frame or contrast the whole event.
Four common ways to express manner
| Strategy | Examples | Core use |
|---|---|---|
| invariant adjective-like form | منيح، واطي، صح | well, softly/low, correctly |
| بـ + noun or masdar | بهدوء، بسرعة، بوضوح | calmly, quickly, clearly |
| lexical or fixed phrase | هيك، دغري، سوا، على مهلك | like this, directly, together, unhurriedly |
| conventional repetition | شوي شوي، وحدة وحدة | gradually, one by one |
These are not interchangeable formations. منيح is normal without بـ, while هدوء normally appears as بهدوء in the manner phrase. A dictionary meaning does not by itself tell you which structure Lebanese uses.
Invariant adjective-like forms
Several frequent words have an adverbial use with no agreement. They describe the performance of the action, not the person doing it.
جاد شرح الفكرة منيح قبل الاجتماع.
Zhād sharaḥ el-fikra mnīḥ ʾabel el-izhtimēʿ.
Jad explained the idea well before the meeting. (informal; invariant manner منيح)
رنا حكيت واطي لأن البيبي كان نايم.
Rana ḥikyit wāṭe laʾann el-baybe kēn nāyem.
Rana spoke softly because the baby was asleep. (informal; literally 'low')
قريت العنوان صح، بس كتبت الرقم غلط.
ʾrēt el-ʿonwēn ṣaḥḥ, bass katabet er-raʾam ghalaṭ.
I read the address correctly, but wrote the number wrong. (informal; paired invariant manner forms)
Agreement distinguishes an adverbial reading from a predicate description. هني اشتغلوا منيح says that their work was done well; هني منيحين بالشغل describes them as good at the work.
هني اشتغلوا منيح وخلصوا قبل الوقت.
hinne ishtaghalo mnīḥ w-khallaṣo ʾabel el-waʾet.
They worked well and finished early. (informal; manner form does not agree)
هني منيحين بهالشغل وبيفهموا بالتفاصيل.
hinne mnīḥīn b-hash-shoghl w-byifhamo bit-tafāṣīl.
They're good at this work and understand the details. (informal; agreeing predicate adjective)
Conventional بـ phrases
Many manner expressions attach بـ to a noun or verbal noun. The phrase presents the action as taking place “with” calmness, speed, clarity, care, or detail.
نادين جاوبت بهدوء رغم إنو الكل كان معصب.
Nādīn zhāwabit b-hodūʾ raghm inno l-kill kēn mʿaṣṣeb.
Nadine answered calmly even though everyone was upset. (neutral spoken Lebanese)
قرا التعليمات بسرعة ونسي آخر خطوة.
ʾara t-taʿlīmēt b-sorʿa w-nise ākher khoṭwe.
He read the instructions quickly and forgot the last step. (informal; بـ phrase)
شرحت بالتفصيل كل التغييرات يلي طلبوها.
sharaḥit bit-tafṣīl kill et-taghyīrēt yalle ṭalabūha.
She explained in detail all the changes they requested. (professional spoken; manner before a heavy object)
The pattern is common, but it is not a machine that accepts every abstract noun. بهدوء، بسرعة، بوضوح، بعناية، بالتفصيل are established expressions. Other meanings may prefer a bare word or a longer phrase. This is why mechanically adding بـ to منيح produces no normal Lebanese adverb.
The same string can sometimes have wider scope. بصراحة، ما عجبني الاقتراح means “frankly, I did not like the proposal,” a comment on the speaker's whole statement. جاوب بصراحة means “he answered frankly,” the manner of answering. Clause position and intonation make the difference.
Lexical and fixed manner phrases
Some of the most natural adverbials must be learned as complete expressions.
اعملها هيك، وبعدين اضغط عالزر الأزرق.
iʿmala hēk, w-baʿdēn iḍghaṭ ʿaz-zirr el-azraʾ.
Do it like this, then press the blue button. (informal; demonstrative manner هيك)
بعد المحطة روح دغري وما تبرم شمال.
baʿd el-maḥaṭṭa rūḥ doghre w-ma tibrom shmēl.
After the station, go straight and don't turn left. (informal; route manner دغري)
خلينا نراجع الأرقام سوا قبل ما نبعت الملف.
khallīna nrēzheʿ el-arʾām sawa ʾabel ma nibʿat el-malaff.
Let's review the numbers together before sending the file. (informal; participant manner سوا)
سوق على مهلك، الطريق مبلولة.
sūʾ ʿala mahlak, eṭ-ṭarīʾ mablūle.
Drive carefully and take your time; the road is wet. (informal; fixed phrase to one man)
English directly splits several senses that دغري can cover: a straight route, no intermediate step, or immediate action. Context decides. Fixed phrases are efficient precisely because speakers store them as chunks, not because they follow one universal adverb rule.
Repetition can iconically shape an event
Conventional repetition often depicts gradual, distributed, or careful progress. The repeated pieces suggest stages or separate units.
امشوا شوي شوي لأن الدرج زحط.
imsho shwayy shwayy laʾann ed-darazh zaḥeṭ.
Walk slowly and carefully because the stairs are slippery. (informal; gradual manner)
دخلوا الضيوف وحدة وحدة عالقاعة.
dikhlo ḍ-ḍyūf waḥde waḥde ʿal-ʾāʿa.
The guests entered the hall one by one. (informal; distributed participants)
زيد المي حبة حبة لحتى تزبط العجينة.
zīd el-mayy ḥabbe ḥabbe la-ḥatta tizboṭ el-ʿzhīne.
Add the water little by little until the dough is right. (informal; incremental action)
This is not free duplication of any adjective. شوي شوي، وحدة وحدة، حبة حبة are conventional patterns with recognizable event structures. When no established repetition exists, use a lexical adverb or a بـ phrase.
Neutral position and event framing
A short manner phrase normally follows the verb and often the direct object. This keeps it inside the event it describes.
رنا شرحت الخطة بهدوء للموظفين.
Rana sharaḥit el-khoṭṭa b-hodūʾ lal-mwaẓẓafīn.
Rana explained the plan calmly to the employees. (neutral action-internal manner)
بهدوء، رنا شرحت الخطة وما قاطعت حدا.
b-hodūʾ, Rana sharaḥit el-khoṭṭa w-ma ʾāṭaʿit ḥada.
Calmly, Rana explained the plan and didn't interrupt anyone. (careful or rhetorical whole-event frame)
Initial manner is possible, but it is marked: it frames the performance of the whole sequence and often carries a deliberate pause. English allows many mid-clause adverb positions; Lebanese does not license random movement. The broader placement logic appears on adverb placement.
شوي: amount of action or degree of manner
The location of شوي reveals what it measures.
حكى شوي وبعدين سكت.
ḥaka shwayy w-baʿdēn sakat.
He spoke a little, then stopped. (small amount or duration of speaking)
حكى واطي شوي لأن الولد نام.
ḥaka wāṭe shwayy laʾann el-walad nēm.
He spoke a little more softly because the child fell asleep. (low degree of the manner 'softly')
The first شوي measures the event; the second sits after واطي and reduces the loudness. This is a scope contrast, not a difference in the dictionary meaning of شوي.
Dialogue: recording a voice message
سجلت الرسالة، بس حسيتها طويلة شوي.
sazhzhalt er-risēle, bass ḥassēta ṭwīle shwayy.
I recorded the message, but it felt a little long. (informal; degree on an adjective)
جربي احكي شوي وبعدين اسمعي التسجيل.
zharrbe iḥke shwayy w-baʿdēn ismaʿe t-taszhīl.
Try speaking for a bit, then listen to the recording. (informal; شوي measures the event)
قصدي بدي احكي ببطء شوي، مش وقت أقل.
ʾaṣde badde iḥke b-boṭʾ shwayy, mish waʾet aʾall.
I mean I want to speak a little more slowly, not for less time. (informal; corrected scope)
إيه، واحكي الأسماء بوضوح وحدة وحدة.
ē, w-iḥke l-asma b-woḍūḥ waḥde waḥde.
Yes, and say the names clearly, one by one. (informal; lexical manner plus distribution)
Common Mistakes
Making the manner word agree with the subject
❌ هني اشتغلوا منيحين وخلصوا بكير.
Incorrect for 'they worked well' — plural منيحين describes the people rather than modifying how they worked.
✅ هني اشتغلوا منيح وراجعوا كل الأرقام.
hinne ishtaghalo mnīḥ w-rēzhaʿo kill el-arʾām.
They worked well and checked all the numbers.
Adding بـ mechanically to a bare manner form
❌ جاد شرح الفكرة بمنييح.
Incorrect — منيح is already the conventional manner form and does not take بـ here.
✅ جاد شرح الفكرة منيح من أول مرة.
Zhād sharaḥ el-fikra mnīḥ min awwal marra.
Jad explained the idea well the first time.
Copying an English middle position
❌ رنا بسرعة التقرير كتبت.
Incorrect neutral order — the manner phrase cannot split the subject from this object-verb sequence by English analogy.
✅ رنا كتبت التقرير بسرعة قبل ما تطلع.
Rana katabit et-taʾrīr b-sorʿa ʾabel ma tiṭlaʿ.
Rana wrote the report quickly before leaving.
Inventing free adjective repetition
❌ جاوب واضح واضح قدام الكل.
Incorrect for 'answered very clearly' — واضح is not freely duplicated as a manner adverb.
✅ جاوب بوضوح قدام الكل وما تهرب من السؤال.
zhēwab b-woḍūḥ ʾoddēm el-kill w-ma tharrab min es-soʾāl.
He answered clearly in front of everyone and didn't evade the question.
Key Takeaways
- Lebanese manner is lexical: learn invariant forms, established بـ phrases, fixed expressions, and conventional repetitions as chunks.
- Manner expressions do not agree; an agreeing adjective describes a participant instead.
- Neutral manner stays near the verb or object, while initial position frames the whole event and sounds more deliberate.
- Placement controls scope: حكى شوي limits the speaking event, but حكى واطي شوي lowers the manner degree.
