A useful café interaction is built from grammar, not a fixed phrasebook: open contact, choose an item with بدّي, add quantity and preferences, check what was heard, and close with payment and thanks. Once these slots are automatic, the same frames work in a bakery, juice shop, casual restaurant, or delivery call.
This page uses an urban Lebanese/Beirut service baseline. Menus and staff may mix Arabic, French, and English vocabulary, and individual establishments develop their own routines. Keep the Lebanese clause frame stable even when the item name is multilingual.
The core ordering frame: بدّي + item
بدّي means “I want / I'd like.” It is followed directly by a noun phrase or by a bare verb. There is no English-style article before an indefinite item.
مرحبا، بدي قهوة سادة وكاسة مي، لو سمحت.
marḥaba, badde ʾahwe sēde w-kēset mayy, law samaḥt.
Hello, I'd like an unsweetened coffee and a glass of water, please. (polite order)
بدنا صحن حمص وسلطة، وبعد منقرر الطبق الرئيسي.
badna ṣaḥen ḥommoṣ w-salaṭa, w-baʿd mnaʾarrer eṭ-ṭabaʾ er-raʾīse.
We'd like a plate of hummus and a salad, and then we'll decide on the main course. (group order)
The subject is encoded in the suffix: بدّي “I want,” بدّك / بدّك baddak/baddik “you want,” بدّه / بدّها, and بدنا / بدكن / بدهن. The full paradigm is on the بَدّ reference page.
Collocation table: containers, portions, and preferences
Learn the item together with its normal measure word. English one coffee often becomes either the beverage alone or a container phrase, depending on what is being counted.
| Frame | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| فنجان + drink | فنجان قهوة | a small cup of coffee |
| كاسة + drink | كاسة مي / كاسة عصير | a glass of water/juice |
| قنينة + drink | قنينة مي كبيرة | a large bottle of water |
| صحن + food | صحن حمص | a plate of hummus |
| قطعة + food | قطعة كيك صغيرة | a small piece of cake |
| بلا + noun | بلا سكر / بلا بصل | without sugar/onion |
| مع + noun | مع حليب / مع خبز زيادة | with milk/extra bread |
| عالجنب | الصوص عالجنب | the sauce on the side |
بدنا قنينتين مي كبار وتلات كاسات.
badna ʾinnīntēn mayy kbār w-talēt kēsēt.
We'd like two large bottles of water and three glasses. (group order)
إلي ساندويش لبنة بلا بندورة، والصوص عالجنب.
ile sāndwīsh labne bla banadōra, w-eṣ-ṣōṣ ʿal-zhanb.
For me, a labneh sandwich without tomato, with the sauce on the side. (elliptical order after the frame is established)
In the first full order, establish بدّي / بدنا. After that, إلي... “for me...” and item fragments are natural because the ordering action is already shared.
Coffee preferences form a small system
For Lebanese-style coffee, سادة means without sugar, وسط medium-sweet, and حلوة sweet. Establishments and households differ in strength and preparation, so ask rather than assume.
بدنا قهوتين: إلي سادة، وإلها وسط.
badna ʾahwetēn: ile sēde, w-ila wasaṭ.
We'd like two coffees: unsweetened for me and medium-sweet for her. (contrasting two preferences)
إذا فيك، خلي القهوة عالخفيف وحط السكر عالجنب.
iza fīk, khalle l-ʾahwe ʿal-khafīf w-ḥoṭṭ es-sokkar ʿal-zhanb.
If possible, make the coffee light and put the sugar on the side. (preference request to one man)
بلا سكر is compositional “without sugar.” سادة is a conventional coffee collocation. They may describe the same result, but سادة sounds like an established order category.
Ask for service with فيك or ممكن
Use فيك + bare imperfect when asking the staff member to do something, and ممكن + bare imperfect when framing the action as possible. The following verb identifies who acts.
فيك تجيبلي المنيو لما تفضى؟
fīk tzhīble l-minyō lamma tifḍa?
Could you bring me the menu when you're free? (polite request to one man)
ممكن نقعد عالطاولة اللي حد الشباك؟
momken niʾʿod ʿaṭ-ṭāwle lli ḥadd esh-shibbēk?
Could we sit at the table by the window? (asking permission)
The first asks the listener to act; the second asks whether the speakers may act. Compare the subject on the bare verb: تجيب “you bring” versus نقعد “we sit.”
A substitution frame for a complete order
Use:
[opening] + بدّي/بدنا + [quantity/container] + [item] + [preference] + لو سمحت.
| Slot | Safe options |
|---|---|
| opening | مرحبا / يعطيك العافية / مسا الخير |
| quantity/container | فنجان / فنجانين / كاسة / قنينة / صحن / قطعة |
| item | قهوة / مي / عصير / حمص / كيك |
| preference | سادة / وسط / بلا سكر / مع حليب / عالجنب |
| softener | لو سمحت / إذا فيك |
يعطيك العافية، بدنا فنجانين قهوة وسط وقنينة مي، لو سمحت.
yaʿṭīk el-ʿāfye, badna finzhēnēn ʾahwe wasaṭ w-ʾinnīnet mayy, law samaḥt.
Hope work is going well. We'd like two medium-sweet coffees and a bottle of water, please.
مرحبا، بدي قطعة كيك صغيرة مع قهوة بلا حليب.
marḥaba, badde ʾiṭʿet kēk zghīre maʿ ʾahwe bla ḥalīb.
Hello, I'd like a small piece of cake with coffee without milk.
Do not fill every slot mechanically. A counter order can be short; a table order often needs containers, preferences, and confirmation.
Check the order before it becomes a complaint
Use صح؟ after a summary, or repeat the item with its beneficiary. A waiter can check; a customer can also confirm when several people ordered at once.
يعني فنجانين قهوة سادة، وحدة مع حليب، وتلات قناني مي، صح؟
yaʿne finzhēnēn ʾahwe sēde, waḥde maʿ ḥalīb, w-tlēt ʾanēne mayy, ṣaḥḥ?
So, two cups of unsweetened coffee, one with milk, and three bottles of water, right? (order confirmation)
القهوة السادة إلي، والوسط لرفيقتي.
el-ʾahwe s-sēde ile, w-el-wasaṭ la-rfīʾte.
The unsweetened coffee is for me, and the medium one is for my friend. (clarifying allocation)
Articles matter here: the first mention can be indefinite قهوة سادة; when identifying the delivered order, القهوة السادة refers to the specific coffee already in the conversation.
Repair an order politely and specifically
Start with عفوا or لو سمحت, identify the item, state the discrepancy, and name the requested repair. Avoid only saying “this is wrong.”
عفوا، هاي القهوة فيها سكر وأنا طلبتها سادة.
ʿafwan, hay el-ʾahwe fīya sokkar w-ana ṭlabta sēde.
Excuse me, this coffee has sugar, and I ordered it unsweetened. (clear service repair)
حقك عليي، بغيرلك ياها هلق.
ḥaʾʾak ʿalayye, bghayyirlak yēha hallaʾ.
My fault; I'll replace it for you now. (staff uptake to one man)
The demonstrative follows the production baseline هاي. The object is resumed with فيها and طلبتها because the specific coffee is now the topic.
Ask for and split the bill
الحساب لو سمحت is a complete contextual request. Add a payment-method or splitting question as needed.
الحساب لو سمحت، وفينا ندفع بالكرت؟
el-ḥsēb law samaḥt, w-fīna nidfaʿ bil-kart?
The bill, please. Can we pay by card?
فينا ندفع كل واحد لحاله، ولا لازم الحساب سوا؟
fīna nidfaʿ kill wāḥad la-ḥālo, walla lāzem el-ḥsēb sawa?
Can each of us pay separately, or does the bill have to be together?
بالكرت uses بـ for means: “by card.” Actual payment options in Lebanon can change by establishment and circumstance, so ask rather than assume.
Dialogue 1: a quick morning coffee
صباح الخير، بدي قهوة وسط عالسريع وقنينة مي صغيرة.
ṣabēḥ el-khēr, badde ʾahwe wasaṭ ʿas-sarīʿ w-ʾinnīnet mayy zghīre.
Customer: Good morning. I'd like a quick medium-sweet coffee and a small bottle of water.
صباح النور. بدك تشرب القهوة هون ولا تاخدها معك؟
ṣabēḥ en-nūr. baddak tishrab el-ʾahwe hōn walla tākhoda maʿak?
Server: Good morning. Do you want to drink the coffee here or take it with you? (to one man)
باخدها معي. قديش الحساب؟
bākhoda maʿe. ʾaddēsh el-ḥsēb?
Customer: I'll take it with me. How much is the bill?
خمسة دولار. يعطيك العافية.
khamse dōlār. yaʿṭīk el-ʿāfye.
Server: Five dollars. Have a good day. (friendly service closing)
The choice هون ولا معك؟ is a compact alternative question. The reply uses the object suffix -ها to resume the coffee.
Dialogue 2: correcting and paying for a shared lunch
عفوا، نحنا طلبنا البطاطا عالجنب، مش جوات الساندويش.
ʿafwan, niḥna ṭlabna l-baṭāṭa ʿal-zhanb, mish zhowwēt es-sāndwīsh.
Customer: Excuse me, we ordered the fries on the side, not inside the sandwich.
معكن حق، بجيبلكن البطاطا بصحن عالجنب بلا ما نغير باقي الطلب.
maʿkon ḥaʾʾ, bzhīblikon el-baṭāṭa b-ṣaḥen ʿal-zhanb bla ma nghayyer bēʾe ṭ-ṭalab.
Server: You're right. I'll bring you the fries on a plate on the side without changing the rest of the order.
ممتاز، يسلمو. وبعدين بدنا الحساب مقسوم بالنص.
momtēz, ysalmo. w-baʿdēn badna l-ḥsēb maʾsūm bin-noṣṣ.
Customer: Great, thank you. And afterward we'd like the bill split in half.
The complaint identifies one repair while preserving the rest of the order. The staff response confirms scope, which prevents a second misunderstanding.
Common Mistakes
Translating “Can I have...?” word for word
❌ فيني عندي فنجان قهوة؟
Malformed calque—the ability frame cannot directly host possession in this request.
✅ بدي قهوة وسط، لو سمحت.
badde ʾahwe wasaṭ, law samaḥt.
I'd like a medium-sweet coffee, please.
Adding English “of” after a container
❌ بدي كاسة من مي.
Unnatural container calque for an ordinary order—the measure and substance form a direct phrase.
✅ بدي كاسة مي وقنينة صغيرة للطريق.
badde kēset mayy w-ʾinnīne zghīre laṭ-ṭarīʾ.
I'd like a glass of water and a small bottle for the road.
Inserting a preposition after بلا
❌ القهوة بلا من سكر.
Incorrect frame—بلا takes the noun directly.
✅ القهوة بلا سكر، والحليب عالجنب.
el-ʾahwe bla sokkar, w-el-ḥalīb ʿal-zhanb.
The coffee without sugar, and the milk on the side.
Losing agreement in a group request
❌ نحنا بدي نقعد برا.
Agreement error—the desire form is first-person singular while the pronoun is plural.
✅ نحنا بدنا نقعد برا إذا في طاولة فاضية.
niḥna badna niʾʿod barra iza fī ṭāwle fāḍye.
We'd like to sit outside if there's a free table.
Complaining without naming the repair
❌ هاد غلط، خدها.
Underspecified complaint—the staff member cannot tell what needs changing.
✅ عفوا، أنا طلبت هاي بلا بصل. فيك تغيرلي ياها؟
ʿafwan, ana ṭlabt hay bla baṣal. fīk tghayyirle yēha?
Excuse me, I ordered this without onion. Could you replace it for me?
Key Takeaways
Use بدّي / بدنا + item as the productive ordering core. Add containers and portions before the item, and attach preferences with بلا، مع، عالجنب or conventional coffee categories such as سادة and وسط. Use فيك / ممكن for added actions, confirm complex orders with صح؟, repair by naming the discrepancy, and close with الحساب لو سمحت plus any payment or splitting question.
