How with كيف or What with شو

Choose كيف when the missing information is a manner, method, route, or condition: “how?” Choose شو when the missing information is a thing, content, action, identity, or category value: “what?” That sounds close to English, but the useful cases are exactly where English packages the question differently: English What is it like? uses Lebanese كيف, while English How do you say X? may use a fixed شو frame. The individual كيف and شو pages give their broader syntax.

Both forms are normal urban Beirut speech (informal). The verb keeps its ordinary Lebanese agreement and aspect; neither question adds English-style do.

Decision tree

  1. Are you asking about the way an action happens—procedure, route, channel, or general method? Use كيف.
  2. Are you asking about someone's or something's condition or evaluation? Use كيف: كيفك؟ كيف الشغل؟
  3. Are you asking for an entity, event content, identity, or action? Use شو: شو وصل؟ شو صار؟ هاد شو؟
  4. Do you want the concrete tool rather than the broader method? Use بشو: بشو فتحتها؟
  5. Do you want a kind, color, size, reason, or opinion? Use an established شو + noun frame: شو نوع، شو لون، شو رأيك.
  6. Does English say “what do you mean?” Decide whether you are asking for a word's meaning (شو يعني...؟) or challenging/clarifying a claim (كيف يعني...؟).
💡
Replace the answer slot before choosing. An answer like بالباص or بهدوء describes how; an answer like المفتاح or اجتماع identifies what.

Manner and procedure: كيف

Initial كيف is the dependable neutral pattern for asking how an action is performed. It can also remain later when the action is already topical.

كيف حضرت هالقهوة من دون ماكينة؟

kīf ḥaḍḍart hal-ʾahwe min dūn mākīna?

How did you make this coffee without a machine? (procedure)

كيف منوصل عالمتحف من هون؟

kīf mnūṣal ʿal-matḥaf min hōn?

How do we get to the museum from here? (route or means)

قلت إنك صلحته. صلحته كيف؟

ʾilt innak ṣallaḥto. ṣallaḥto kīf?

You said you fixed it. How did you fix it? (contextual in-situ manner)

The last order is natural because the repair event is already established. It does not license late bare-object شو as a neutral default; question words have different distributions.

Things and event content: شو

Neutral object شو usually fronts. Predicate شو can follow a topic: هاد شو؟ “what is this?”

شو حضرت للعشا؟

shū ḥaḍḍart lal-ʿasha?

What did you prepare for dinner? (unknown object)

شو وصل بالبريد اليوم؟

shū wiṣil bil-barīd el-yōm?

What arrived in the mail today? (unknown subject)

هاي شو، فاتورة ولا إيصال؟

hāy shū, fātūra walla īṣāl?

What's this, a bill or a receipt? (predicate identity)

The semantic contrast is not “adverb versus pronoun” in every surface position. كيف can introduce a whole embedded manner clause; شو can request a predicate. What matters is the type of answer requested.

Minimal pair 1: manner versus affected object

كيف بتعمل القهوة عالغاز؟

kīf btiʿmal el-ʾahwe ʿal-ghāz?

How do you make coffee on the gas stove? (method)

شو بتعمل بالقهوة الباقية؟

shū btiʿmal bil-ʾahwe l-bēʾye?

What do you do with the coffee that's left? (action performed on an established item)

The verb بتعمل is the same, but كيف asks for a procedure and شو asks for the action or result involving the coffee.

Minimal pair 2: means of arrival versus arriving entity

كيف وصلت عالبيت بهالشتوية؟

kīf wiṣilt ʿal-bēt b-hal-shitwiyye?

How did you get home in this storm? (route or means)

شو وصل عالبيت وإنت برا؟

shū wiṣil ʿal-bēt w-inte barra?

What arrived at the house while you were out? (identity of the arriving thing)

English uses arrive in both, but the unknown grammatical role changes: manner adjunct versus subject.

Minimal pair 3: condition versus identity

كيف هالقهوة، طيبة؟

kīf hal-ʾahwe, ṭayybe?

How's this coffee—is it good? (evaluation)

هاي شو، قهوة سادة؟

hāy shū, ʾahwe sēde?

What's this—black coffee? (identity/type)

English what's the coffee like? is therefore كيف القهوة؟, not a word-for-word شو القهوة؟. Conversely, هاي شو؟ asks what the drink is, not whether it tastes good.

Broad method with كيف versus concrete instrument with بشو

كيف lets the answer be a sequence, technique, channel, route, or tool. بشو specifically requests the instrument or medium.

كيف فتحت العلبة من دون ما تكسرها؟

kīf fataḥt el-ʿelbe min dūn ma tiksira?

How did you open the container without breaking it? (broad method)

بشو فتحت العلبة، بالسكينة؟

b-shū fataḥt el-ʿelbe, bis-sikkīne?

What did you open the container with—with the knife? (specific tool)

كيف بعتت الملف؟ — بالإيميل، بعد ما صغرته.

kīf baʿattet el-malaf? — bil-īmēl, baʿd ma ṣaggharto.

How did you send the file? — By email, after reducing its size. (channel plus procedure)

The answer بالسكينة could satisfy either question, but كيف does not presuppose that a single instrument is the whole answer.

State questions and English what-like constructions

With a suffix or a topic, كيف asks about condition: كيفك؟ كيف الشغل؟ كيف الطريق؟ English often uses what ... like? in the same function.

كيفك اليوم بعد السفر؟

kīfak el-yōm baʿd es-safar?

How are you today after the trip? (male addressee; condition)

كيف الوضع بالشغل الجديد؟

kīf el-waḍeʿ bish-shoghol el-zhdīd?

What's the situation like at the new job? (English what-like question, Lebanese condition كيف)

كيف كان الطريق عالضيعة؟

kīf kēn eṭ-ṭarīʾ ʿaḍ-ḍayʿa?

What was the road to the village like? (condition/evaluation)

كيفك؟ is often a greeting, so a short منيح، وإنت؟ is natural. It does not automatically request a complete report.

Fixed شو frames English may translate with “how”

Some Lebanese questions select شو because the construction asks for content even where English prefers how.

شو رأيك بالخطة الجديدة؟

shū raʾyak bil-khiṭṭa l-zhdīde?

How do you feel about / what do you think of the new plan? (opinion content)

شو بتسموا هالأكلة بالبيت؟

shū btsammo hal-akle bil-bēt?

What do you call this dish at home? (requested name)

شو صار مع الطلب؟

shū ṣār maʿ eṭ-ṭalab?

What happened with the order? (event content)

Memorize the Lebanese frame, not the English first word. كيف رأيك؟ is not the neutral equivalent of “how do you feel about it?” when asking for an opinion; use شو رأيك بـ...؟

شو يعني versus كيف يعني

شو يعني X؟ asks for the meaning of a word, sign, or expression. كيف يعني X؟ asks the previous speaker to unpack or justify a claim: “what do you mean / how so?”

شو يعني هالرمز عالخريطة؟

shū yaʿne har-ramz ʿal-kharīṭa?

What does this symbol on the map mean? (lexical interpretation)

كيف يعني الموعد اختياري؟

kīf yaʿne l-mawʿed ikhtiyāre?

What do you mean the appointment is optional? (clarification or challenge)

Delivery matters. A sharp كيف يعني؟ may challenge the claim; a broad, curious contour simply asks for elaboration.

💡
For “what do you mean?”, identify the repair target. A word's meaning takes شو يعني...؟; an unclear claim or implication takes كيف يعني...؟.

An ambiguous case resolved by context: كيف صار؟

كيف صار؟ can ask how an event came about, how a person is now, or what process produced a result. The referent must be recoverable.

سمعت إنو صار حادث قدام بيت جاد. كيف صار؟

smiʿt inno ṣār ḥādes ʾoddēm bēt Zhād. kīf ṣār?

I heard there was an accident in front of Jad's house. How did it happen? (manner/circumstances from context)

وشو صار بعدين؟

w-shū ṣār baʿdēn?

And what happened afterward? (next event content)

The first asks for the circumstances of an established accident; the second asks what event followed. Without context, شو صار؟ is the safer open “what happened?” question.

Learner repair: from object to method

If a learner asks شو فتحت؟, the listener expects an object: “What did you open?” To ask for the method, repair the missing information type.

شو فتحت؟

shū fataḥt?

What did you open? (object question)

قصدي، كيف فتحت هالباب؟ وبشو؟

ʾaṣde, kīf fataḥt hal-bēb? w-b-shū?

I mean, how did you open this door—and with what? (repair from object to method, then tool)

The repair first asks broadly with كيف, then narrows to the instrument with بشو.

Register and regional recognition

Formal Arabic also has كيف (formal), but its surrounding morphology and vocabulary differ; sharing the word does not make an otherwise Lebanese clause formal. ماذا (formal) is not a casual substitute for شو. إيش is useful recognition input (regional: Palestine, Jordan) for “what,” while Beirut production remains شو. These labels identify regional forms; they do not make كيف and regional “what” words semantic equivalents.

Common Mistakes

Using شو for manner

❌ شو وصلت عالمطار؟

Incorrect for asking by what route or means the listener arrived.

✅ كيف وصلت عالمطار؟

kīf wiṣilt ʿal-maṭār?

How did you get to the airport?

Using كيف for an unknown object

❌ كيف اشتريت من السوق؟

Wrong for ‘what did you buy?’; كيف asks about the manner of buying.

✅ شو اشتريت من السوق؟

shū ishtarēt min es-sūʾ?

What did you buy at the market?

Asking for a tool with a stranded preposition

❌ شو فتحت هالباب فيه؟

English-shaped preposition stranding; Lebanese keeps بـ with شو.

✅ بشو فتحت هالباب؟

b-shū fataḥt hal-bēb?

What did you open this door with?

Copying English “how do you feel about” word for word

❌ كيف رأيك بالخطة؟

Wrong neutral frame for requesting an opinion.

✅ شو رأيك بالخطة؟

shū raʾyak bil-khiṭṭa?

What do you think of the plan?

Key Takeaways

Use كيف for manner, route, procedure, condition, and evaluation. Use شو for entities, event content, identity, actions, and category frames. Narrow broad كيف to instrument بشو when the tool itself is missing. Learn English what-like and how-like expressions through their Lebanese frames: كيف الشغل؟، شو رأيك؟، شو يعني؟، كيف يعني؟
