English hides three Lebanese constructions inside there is, have, and can. Bare في presents something as existing or available. عند + possessor places something in a person's domain and usually translates as “have.” فيـ + pronoun suffix + bare verb expresses personal ability: فيني روح “I can go.”
The forms overlap historically and spatially, but their conversational jobs are distinct. The fastest diagnostic is to ask whose viewpoint organizes the sentence: no possessor, a possessor, or an able participant.
The fast decision tree
- Are you introducing something into the conversation—someone, a problem, coffee, time, a seat? Use bare في + noun: “there is/are.”
- Does a person or organization have, hold, experience, or have access to something? Use عند + possessor + noun.
- Is a known object temporarily with someone? Put that object first, then عند + possessor.
- Is the complement an action and the subject is able to do it? Use suffixed فيـ + bare imperfect.
- Are you simply locating a known thing at an ordinary place? This is neither choice: use بـ + full place noun in the Beirut baseline.
Bare في introduces existence or availability
Existential في tells the listener that an entity, situation, or resource exists in the relevant scene. The following noun is often new and indefinite. Word for word, Lebanese says “there is a pharmacy nearby,” not “a pharmacy is nearby.”
في صيدلية فاتحة حد الفندق.
fī ṣaydaliyye fētḥa ḥadd el-fondoʾ.
There's an open pharmacy next to the hotel. (neutral; new entity)
في كرسي فاضي حد الشباك.
fī kirse fāḍe ḥadd esh-shobbēk.
There's an empty chair by the window. (neutral; availability)
في مشكلة زغيرة بالحجز.
fī mishkle zghīre bil-ḥazhez.
There's a small problem with the reservation. (neutral; situation introduced)
في قهوة بالمطبخ إذا بدك.
fī ʾahwe bil-maṭbakh iza baddak.
There's coffee in the kitchen if you want some. (informal; available resource)
The last example does not say who owns the coffee. It makes coffee available within a scene. Its ordinary negative is ما في:
ما في بنزين كفاية نوصل عالضيعة.
ma fī benzīn kfēye nōṣal ʿaḍ-ḍayʿa.
There isn't enough gas for us to reach the village. (informal; existential negation)
See existential sentences and ما في for word order and negation.
عند anchors the noun to a possessor
Lebanese has no ordinary present-tense verb corresponding exactly to English have. عند literally places a noun “at” a person, but grammatically it creates a possessive domain. It covers ownership, temporary possession, appointments, resources, and experienced conditions.
عندي نسخة زيادة من المفتاح.
ʿinde noskha zyēde min el-miftēḥ.
I have an extra copy of the key. (neutral; possession)
عند رشا موعد مع الدكتور عالتلاتة.
ʿind Rasha mawʿed maʿ ed-doktōr ʿat-tlēte.
Rasha has a doctor's appointment at three. (neutral; scheduled relation)
عندكن وقت نشرب شي قبل الفيلم؟
ʿindkon waʾet nishrab she ʾabl el-fīlem?
Do you all have time to drink something before the movie? (informal; available time)
ما عندي خبرة بهالبرنامج، بس بتعلم بسرعة.
ma ʿinde khibra b-hal-barnēmazh, bass bitʿallam b-sorʿa.
I don't have experience with this program, but I learn quickly. (neutral; possessed competence)
Possession here is broader than legal ownership. English likewise says “I have a headache” and “I have a meeting” without claiming ownership. The عند possession page gives the full suffix paradigm.
Three minimal pairs that change the viewpoint
Existence versus possession
في لابتوب فاضي بغرفة الاجتماعات.
fī lābtōb fāḍe b-ghorfet el-izhtimēʿāt.
There's an available laptop in the meeting room. (neutral; the resource exists)
عندي لابتوب فاضي فيك تستعمله.
ʿinde lābtōb fāḍe fīk tistaʿmlo.
I have an available laptop you can use. (informal; resource in my domain)
General availability versus personal availability
في وقت نمرق عالسوبرماركت قبل العشا.
fī waʾet nimroʾ ʿas-sūbarmārket ʾabl el-ʿasha.
There's time to stop by the supermarket before dinner. (informal; schedule permits it)
عندي وقت مرق معك بعد الشغل.
ʿinde waʾet mroʾ maʿak baʿd esh-shoghol.
I have time to stop by with you after work. (informal; my availability)
A thing in the scene versus a thing associated with a person
في سيارة سودة ناطرة برا.
fī sayyāra sawde nāṭra barra.
There's a black car waiting outside. (neutral; scene-setting)
عند الجيران سيارة سودة جديدة.
ʿind el-zhīrān sayyāra sawde zhdīde.
The neighbors have a new black car. (neutral; possessor viewpoint)
The difference is discourse structure, not merely definite versus indefinite. في opens a slot in the scene; عند opens a possessor's domain.
Known object first: custody is not ownership
When the listener already knows the object, place it first and use عند to say who currently has it. This often describes custody, not permanent ownership.
مفتاح السيارة عند ميرا لهلق.
miftēḥ es-sayyāra ʿind Mīra la-hallaʾ.
Mira still has the car key. (informal; current custody)
الملف عند المحاسبة، مش عند المدير.
el-malaf ʿind el-muḥāsabe, mish ʿind el-mdīr.
The file is with accounting, not with the manager. (neutral; current location/custody)
Compare explicit ownership:
الكاميرا تبع ربيع، بس هلق عند أخته.
el-kāmīra tabaʿ Rabīʿ, bass hallaʾ ʿind okhto.
The camera belongs to Rabih, but his sister has it now. (informal; owner versus custodian)
English has can leave this distinction vague. Lebanese تبع identifies belonging, while عند identifies the current possessive or locative domain.
Suffixed فيـ plus an action means personal ability
When فيـ bears a pronoun suffix and is followed by a bare imperfect verb, it means that the person can perform the action. The verb after it lacks the ordinary indicative b-prefix.
فيني ابعتلك الصور الليلة.
fīne ibʿatlak eṣ-ṣowar el-lēle.
I can send you the photos tonight. (informal; personal ability)
فيكن تقعدوا هون لحتى يوصل الباص.
fīkon tiʾʿodo hūn la-ḥatta yōṣal el-bāṣ.
You all can sit here until the bus arrives. (informal; permission/practical possibility)
ما فيها تسوق لأنو إيدها موجوعة.
ma fiyya tsūʾ laʾanno īda mawzhūʿa.
She can't drive because her hand hurts. (informal; inability)
This differs from bare existential في سيارة “there is a car” and locative suffixed فيها بنزين “there is gas in it.” The next complement tells you which construction you have: a bare action points to ability. See فيـ ‘can’.
Location is a separate question
Do not choose في merely because English says in. With a full place noun, this course's Beirut production baseline uses attached بـ. عند is appropriate when the location is a person's place or domain.
رنا بالمكتبة، والكتاب اللي بدك ياه عندها.
Rana bil-maktabe, wil-ktēb ille baddak yē ʿinda.
Rana is at the library, and she has the book you want. (neutral; place versus custody)
منلتقي عند سمر ولا بالمقهى؟
mniltʾe ʿind Samar walla bil-maʾha?
Are we meeting at Samar's place or at the café? (informal; person's place versus ordinary venue)
Context-resolved ambiguity with عند
عند ليلى قهوة can mean that Leila has coffee available or, in a location-focused exchange, that there is coffee at Leila's place. That is not a flaw: the “possessor's domain” includes both control and personal location. Make the intended continuation explicit.
عند ليلى قهوة طيبة؛ هي جابتها من كولومبيا.
ʿind Layla ʾahwe ṭayybe; hiyye zhēbita min Kolombye.
Leila has good coffee; she brought it from Colombia. (informal; possession/source)
عند ليلى قهوة جاهزة، يلا نمرق لعندها.
ʿind Layla ʾahwe zhēhze, yalla nimroʾ la-ʿinda.
There's coffee ready at Leila's place, so let's stop by. (informal; location/domain reading)
Register and regional scope
These patterns are ordinary (informal/neutral spoken Lebanese) and broadly Levantine, though forms and preferred alternatives vary across cities. Formal Arabic uses other existential and possessive resources and may use في before full noun phrases as the locative preposition “in.” Do not import that formal full-NP pattern into the Beirut production baseline. Also keep existential في, locative فيـ + suffix, and modal فيـ + suffix separate even though they share a written shape.
Common Mistakes
Using في when a possessor matters
❌ فيي موعد مع السفارة بكرا.
Incorrect for ‘I have an appointment’ — فيي cues ability or a locative suffix, not possession of an appointment.
✅ عندي موعد مع السفارة بكرا الصبح.
ʿinde mawʿed maʿ es-sifāra bokra ṣ-ṣobeḥ.
I have an appointment with the embassy tomorrow morning.
Using عند for impersonal scene-setting
❌ عند حدا عالباب.
Incorrect for neutral ‘there's someone at the door’ because no possessor is being established.
✅ في حدا عالباب عم بيدق.
fī ḥada ʿal-bēb ʿam byidoʾʾ.
There's someone at the door knocking.
Putting a b-imperfect after modal فيـ
❌ فيني بروح معكن.
Incorrect in the ability construction — the dependent verb is bare, without the indicative b-prefix.
✅ فيني روح معكن إذا بعد في محل.
fīne rūḥ maʿkon iza baʿd fī maḥall.
I can go with you if there's still room.
Confusing custody with ownership
❌ المظلة عندي يعني هي إلي.
Faulty inference — عندي can describe temporary custody, not necessarily ownership.
✅ المظلة تبع نور، بس هي عندي لهلق.
el-miẓalle tabaʿ Nūr, bass hiyye ʿinde la-hallaʾ.
The umbrella belongs to Nour, but I still have it.
Key Takeaways
Use bare في + noun to introduce existence or availability. Use عند + possessor + noun when a person's or institution's domain matters, and object-first عند for current custody. Use فيـ + suffix + bare imperfect for ability. For the ordinary location of a known thing at a full place noun, leave this contrast and use Beirut بـ.
