Questions & Answers about Bankadan para çektim.
Why is there a -dan ending on bankadan?
The -dan (or -den) suffix means "from". Since you are taking money from the bank, you add it to banka to get bankadan.
Why is para just para and not parayı?
Because it is a general, indefinite object. You are saying "I withdrew money", not "I withdrew the money". If you wanted to say "I withdrew the money", you would use the specific direct object ending (the accusative case) and say parayı çektim. General objects placed right before the verb do not take any ending.
I thought çekmek meant "to pull". Why is it translated as "withdrew"?
You are right! The core meaning of çekmek is "to pull". Turkish uses this verb for many actions where you are extracting something or bringing it toward yourself. "Pulling money" (para çekmek) is the standard Turkish phrase for withdrawing money from an ATM or bank.
Why does çektim use -ti- instead of -di- for the past tense?
