Questions & Answers about Selam, görüşürüz!
How does görüşürüz mean "see you" if there is no word for "you" in it?
In Turkish, görüşürüz actually translates closer to "we see each other." It comes from the root verb görmek (to see). The -ş- changes the meaning to seeing each other, and the -üz at the very end is the ending for "we."
What does the -ür- part in the middle of görüşürüz do?
That is the marker for the aorist tense, which is a "broad time" tense in Turkish used for habits or general truths. Even though you mean "I will see you later," Turkish uses this general tense for standard polite promises and farewells rather than the strict future tense.
Can I use selam in formal situations?
No, selam is very informal and friendly, much like saying "hi" or "hey" in English. You should use it with friends, family, and peers. In formal situations or with people you don't know well, it is better to use merhaba (hello).
