Questions & Answers about İyi peri çocuğa yardım etmiş.
Why is the verb etmiş used here instead of the regular past tense etti?
The ending -miş is the inferential or reported past tense. It is used for things we didn't see happen ourselves, like rumors or things we learn from others. Crucially for this sentence, Turkish fairy tales and stories are traditionally told using this -miş tense. Since the sentence is about a good fairy (iyi peri), it belongs in a storybook!
Why does the word for child (çocuk) change to çocuğa?
Two things are happening here. First, the verb yardım etmek (to help) requires the dative case ending -a or -e (meaning 'to' or 'towards'). In Turkish, you literally say you give help 'to' someone. Second, when we add the vowel -a to çocuk, the hard k at the end softens into a soft g (ğ) to make pronunciation smoother.
Why is the verb written as two separate words (yardım etmiş)?
Many Turkish verbs are made by combining a noun with a helper verb like etmek (to do/make). Yardım is the noun for 'help' or 'assistance', so yardım etmek literally means 'to do help'. When we add tense endings, only the helper verb changes, which is why the -miş suffix is attached to etmek, giving us yardım etmiş.
