Questions & Answers about Müşteri soğuk çorbadan şikâyet etti.
Why does the sentence use the ablative ending in çorbadan when the English translation says 'about the cold soup'?
Just like the verbs nefret etmek (to hate) and korkmak (to fear), the verb şikâyet etmek (to complain) always takes the ablative case. While English speakers complain about something, Turkish speakers literally complain 'from' something. Therefore, çorba (soup) takes the -dan suffix.
Why is şikâyet etti written as two separate words?
This is a compound verb. Turkish often creates verbs by pairing a noun with a helper verb like etmek (to do or to make). Here, şikâyet means complaint, so the customer literally 'made a complaint'. Since the noun doesn't drop or change any letters when paired with the helper verb, they are written as two separate words.
What does the circumflex (the little hat symbol) on the 'a' in şikâyet do?
It softens the 'k' right before it, making it sound a bit like a 'ky' sound, and lengthens the 'a' slightly. You will often see this symbol on loanwords from Arabic or Persian to show a pronunciation that breaks standard Turkish phonetic rules.
Why does the adjective soğuk come before çorbadan without taking any suffixes itself?
In Turkish, adjectives like soğuk (cold) always go directly before the noun they describe. When the noun gets a case ending like the ablative -dan, the adjective stays completely unchanged.
