Questions & Answers about Bilgisayarın şifresi ne?
Why does bilgisayar have the suffix -ın?
The -ın suffix means "of" or "'s". It is the genitive suffix that forms the first part of a definite noun compound, showing that the computer owns something specific.
Why is it şifresi and not just şifrei?
The base word is şifre (password). To show it belongs to the computer, we add the 3rd-person possessive suffix -i (meaning "its"). Because şifre ends in a vowel, we insert the buffer letter s to prevent two vowels from touching, making it -si.
In English we just say "the computer's password", so why do we need both -ın and -si in Turkish?
Turkish definite noun compounds require marking both words. The owner gets the genitive suffix (bilgisayarın meaning "the computer's") and the owned object gets the possessive suffix (şifresi meaning "its password").
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
In Turkish present tense sentences, the "to be" verb is often left out entirely, especially with question words like ne (what). The literal structure is just "The computer's its-password what?".
