Questions & Answers about Eşim doktor.
How do we get eşim from eş?
The root word is eş, meaning spouse. To make it 'my spouse', we add the first-person singular possessive suffix. Since eş ends in a consonant and its vowel is 'e', vowel harmony rules tell us to add -im, creating eşim.
Do I need to say benim eşim (my spouse)?
No, you usually don't need the word benim (my). The possessive suffix -im on the end of eşim already tells the listener whose spouse it is. You would only add benim if you wanted to emphasize 'MY spouse' in contrast to someone else's.
Where is the verb 'is' in Eşim doktor?
Turkish doesn't use a separate word for 'is'. For 'he', 'she', 'it', or a third-person subject like 'my spouse', the 'is' is simply implied by putting the subject and the description together. So Eşim doktor perfectly translates to 'My spouse is a doctor'.
Shouldn't there be a bir (a) before doktor?
In English, we say 'a doctor', but Turkish usually leaves out bir (a/an) when stating someone's profession, nationality, or role. You just state the noun directly.
