### The Structure of Situational Compulsion

Sometimes external pressures or unavoidable circumstances force your hand. To express that you are obliged or forced to do something, Turkish pairs the adjective **mecbur** (obliged, forced) with the helper verbs **kalmak** (to remain/end up) or **olmak** (to be).

Using **mecbur kalmak** is especially common when describing a *situational* compulsion—ending up with no other choice as a last resort.

To state the action you are forced to do:
- Add the short verbal noun suffix **-ma** or **-me** to your verb stem.
- *(Optional)* Add a possessive suffix if the logical subject needs to be specified.
- Add the dative case suffix **-(y)a** or **-(y)e**.
- Follow with your conjugated form of **mecbur kalmak** or **mecbur olmak**.

### Negation and Tense

Because the compulsion itself is expressed by **kalmak** or **olmak**, conjugate the helper verb to change the tense or negate the sentence. 

When you negate the helper verb (e.g., *mecbur kalmayacağız*), you are saying "we will not be forced to." The verbal noun taking the dative case stays positive, since you are negating the *pressure*, not the action itself.

### Specifying Causes and Asking Questions

When discussing last resorts, you will frequently state the external circumstance that caused the pressure. This is often done using phrases with **yüzünden** (because of / due to).

To ask if someone was or will be forced into a situation, conjugate the helper verb as a question.
