Compounding Grievances: -dIğI yetmiyormuş gibi

When dealing with a disaster—like a renovation gone wrong—one problem often leads to another. To express "as if it weren't enough that [X happened], [Y also happened]," Turkish uses the phrase yetmiyormuş gibi (literally "like it wasn't sufficing").

To build this structure, attach the familiar participle -dık and a possessive suffix to the verb stem, followed by yetmiyormuş gibi. As usual, adding a vowel-starting possessive suffix causes consonant mutation, softening the k to a ğ.

      • -i -> geçiştirdiği (his/her glossing over)
  • sür-
    • -dük
      • -ü -> sürdüğü (its lasting)
  • yap-
    • -tık
      • -ları -> yaptıkları (their doing)
As if it weren't enough that he glossed over the broken beam, our ordeal continues.
Kırılan kirişi geçiştirdiği yetmiyormuş gibi, çilemiz devam ediyor.
As if it weren't enough that this plaster job took a very long time, we spent a lot of money.
Bu sıva işinin çok uzun sürdüğü yetmiyormuş gibi, çok para harcadık.
As if it weren't enough that they did the whitewash superficially, they slacked off on the other jobs too.
Badanayı üstünkörü yaptıkları yetmiyormuş gibi, diğer işleri de savsakladılar.

Negative Actions

You can easily use this structure to complain about things that didn't happen. Just insert the negative suffix -ma / -me right after the verb stem, before the participle.

  • temizle- (clean) + -me (not) + -dik
    • -leri (their) -> temizlemedikleri
As if it weren't enough that they did not clean up the rubble, this ordeal lasted exactly three months.
