Why do we use เป็น for 'am' instead of another word?
In Thai, there are a few ways to say 'to be'. เป็น is the specific word used to link a person to a category they belong to, such as their profession, nationality, or family role. You will always use เป็น when stating someone's job.
Why is there no word for 'a' before doctor?
Unlike English, Thai does not have articles like 'a', 'an', or 'the'. You just link the pronoun directly to the noun. So 'I am a doctor' is literally 'I be doctor'.
Can a man use this exact sentence?
A man would need to change two words. The pronoun ฉัน (I) is mostly used by women in everyday speech, and the polite ending particle ค่ะ is strictly for women. A man would say ผมเป็นหมอครับ instead.
How would I change this to say 'I am not a doctor'?
This is a tricky rule! You might guess you should put the 'not' word ไม่ before เป็น, but you cannot say ไม่เป็น to mean 'am not a...'. When denying a noun like a profession, you must replace เป็น with ไม่ใช่ (is not). The negative sentence becomes ฉันไม่ใช่หมอค่ะ.
