พวก เขา เก่ง ค่ะ

Questions & Answers about พวก เขา เก่ง ค่ะ

Why is there no word for 'are' in this sentence?
In Thai, words like เก่ง (skillful) act as both an adjective and a verb at the same time. These are called stative verbs. Because the 'is/are' meaning is already built in, you do not use a separate word for 'are' before them.
I learned that เขา means 'he' or 'she'. Why does it mean 'they' here?
The word พวก is a plural marker used for groups of people. When you add พวก in front of the singular pronoun เขา (he/she), it turns it into the plural pronoun พวกเขา (they).
If I want to say 'They are very skillful,' where exactly does the word มาก (very) go?
It goes right after the stative verb! You would say พวกเขาเก่งมากค่ะ. In Thai, degree modifiers like มาก always follow the adjective or stative verb they are describing.
Since the sentence ends with ค่ะ, does that mean the group of skillful people are women?
Not necessarily! The polite particle ค่ะ only shows that the person saying the sentence is female. The group of people (พวกเขา) could be men, women, or a mixed group.
