Trying Out an Action
When you want to express testing or experimenting with an action—like auditioning for a play or trying out a new role—Thai uses a clever "try and see" structure. You place the verb ลอง (try) before the action and the verb ดู (see) after it.
ลอง + Action + ดู
| Try memorizing the leading man's script. | ลอง ท่อง บท พระเอก ดู ครับ |
If the action involves an object or extra details, keep ลอง at the very beginning of the phrase and place ดู at the end, right before any polite particles or time words.
| Try auditioning the leading actress of the play. | ลอง คัดเลือก นางเอก ละคร ดู ครับ |
| Try memorizing the leading actress's script first. | ลอง ท่อง บท นางเอก ดู ก่อน ครับ |
Expressing the Desire to Try
To say you "want to try" doing something, simply add the helper verb อยาก (want) right before ลอง. The closing verb ดู still anchors the end of the action phrase.
อยาก + ลอง + Action + ดู
| I want to try acting in a sad scene. | ฉัน อยาก ลอง แสดง ฉาก เศร้า ดู ค่ะ |
| I want to try rehearsing this sad scene. | ฉัน อยาก ลอง ซ้อม ฉาก เศร้า นี้ ดู ค่ะ |
You can easily build full sentences by adding a subject, like a director or an actor, at the beginning.
| The director wants to try rehearsing the play. | ผู้กำกับ อยาก ลอง ซ้อม ละคร ดู ครับ |
