Big Amounts, Small Amounts
You already know แค่ for amounts that feel small: แค่สิบบาท — only ten baht. Thai has a mirror word for amounts that feel surprisingly BIG: ตั้ง.
| feels small | feels big |
|---|---|
| แค่ สิบ บาท — only 10 baht | ตั้ง พัน บาท — a whole 1,000 baht |
| แค่ ห้า นาที — just 5 minutes | ตั้ง สอง ชั่วโมง — as long as 2 hours |
| I waited for the doctor for as long as two hours. (female speaker) | ฉัน รอ หมอ ตั้ง สอง ชั่วโมง ค่ะ |
How to use it
Put ตั้ง right before the number or amount. The facts don't change — your feeling about them does. รอสองชั่วโมง is neutral; รอตั้งสองชั่วโมง means you can't believe how long that was.
| This shirt costs as much as a thousand baht. (male speaker) | เสื้อ ตัว นี้ ราคา ตั้ง พัน บาท ครับ |
You will often hear it with a surprised or complaining tone — it belongs to everyday spoken Thai. In one sentence you can even use both sides: he has a thousand baht, I only have twenty.
