Noun and adjective reduplication (ๆ)

The Reduplication Symbol (ๆ)

The symbol ๆ (mai yamok) is used to duplicate the word directly preceding it. It serves two main functions in everyday Thai:

  • Pluralizing people: Repeating a noun that refers to a person or group makes it plural. For example, สาว (young woman) becomes สาว ๆ, and เด็ก (child) becomes เด็ก ๆ.
  • Softening or pluralizing descriptions: Repeating an adjective can soften its meaning (like adding "-ish" in English) or emphasize that there is a variety of multiple items fitting that description (e.g., สวย ๆ for "pretty things" or ใหม่ ๆ for "new things").

Necklaces and Belts

When talking about jewelry (เครื่องประดับ) and accessories, you will need specific classifiers to count them. Long, string-like items such as a necklace (สร้อยคอ) or a belt (เข็มขัด) use the classifier เส้น.

To specify a material like pearl (มุก) or to emphasize that an item is genuine (แท้), place these descriptive words immediately after the noun.

When a sentence uses a classifier, the duplicated adjective can optionally follow the classifier rather than the noun itself.

Earrings, Bracelets, and Rings

Because earrings (ต่างหู) are worn in pairs, they typically use the classifier คู่ (pair). If you are describing pieces made of diamond, use the word เพชร.

Circular jewelry worn on the limbs or fingers, such as a bracelet (กำไล) or a ring (แหวน), uses the classifier วง.
