More colours (สีเขียว, สีม่วง)

Building Colour Words

You know สี (colour), แดง, ขาว and ดำ. Thai names a colour by putting สี in front of the colour word — สีแดง red, สีเขียว green — and drops สี when the colour acts as a plain stative verb: เสื้อตัวนี้เขียว this shirt is green.

Two Blues

Thai splits English blue in two: น้ำเงิน is the deep blue of ink and uniforms. The light blue of the daytime sky is สีฟ้า — literally sky colour — and you will meet ฟ้า (sky) itself a little later in the course.

Where the Names Come From

Several colour names are everyday nouns doing double duty: น้ำเงิน is น้ำ + เงิน (silver water), ชมพู is the rose-apple fruit. Thai speakers hear these as plain colour names, exactly like English orange.
