Turning Actions into Places with ที่
Transform an action verb into a location noun by adding the prefix ที่ ("the place for" or "the place of") directly in front of it:
- จอดรถ (to park a car) becomes ที่จอดรถ (parking lot)
- พัก (to stay/rest) becomes ที่พัก (accommodation)
| My car is at the parking lot. | รถ ของ ผม อยู่ ที่จอดรถ ครับ |
| He is still at the accommodation. | เขา ยัง อยู่ ที่พัก ครับ |
Everyday Locations
This pattern forms many everyday location nouns, ranging from physical furniture to concepts like your home address:
- นั่ง (to sit) creates ที่นั่ง (seat)
- ทำงาน (to work) creates ที่ทำงาน (workplace)
- อยู่ (to live/stay) creates ที่อยู่ (address)
| There are no seats in the restaurant. | ใน ร้านอาหาร ไม่ มี ที่นั่ง ค่ะ |
| My workplace is very far. | ที่ทำงาน ของ ฉัน อยู่ ไกล มาก ค่ะ |
| Do you know his address? | คุณ รู้ ที่อยู่ ของ เขา ไหม ครับ |
Public Facilities and Designated Areas
You can also attach ที่ to longer verb phrases (a verb followed by its object) to describe designated public areas and facilities:
- สูบบุหรี่ (to smoke a cigarette) becomes ที่สูบบุหรี่ (smoking area)
- ทิ้งขยะ (to throw away trash) becomes ที่ทิ้งขยะ (trash area)
- ประชุม (to meet) becomes ที่ประชุม (meeting place)
| Where is the smoking area? | ที่สูบบุหรี่ อยู่ ที่ไหน คะ |
| Please throw the garbage in the trash area. | ทิ้ง ขยะ ใน ที่ทิ้งขยะ นะ คะ |
| The meeting place is on the second floor. | ที่ประชุม อยู่ บน ชั้น สอง ครับ |
