เล่น After a Verb
เล่น on its own means to play. Placed AFTER another verb, it turns the action into something done lightly — for fun, not for real:
| verb | + เล่น | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| เดิน walk | เดินเล่น | to stroll, walk for pleasure |
| พูด speak | พูดเล่น | to joke, say something not seriously |
| กิน eat | กินเล่น | to snack, eat for fun (not a real meal) |
| Don't be angry — I was just joking. (male speaker) | อย่า โกรธ นะ ครับ ผม แค่ พูดเล่น |
พูดเล่น — not serious
The most useful one. If a friend looks upset at what you said, rescue it with พูดเล่น: I was only joking. The opposite is พูดจริง — meaning it.
กินเล่น — eating outside meals
Thai snack culture runs on กินเล่น: things you eat for pleasure between real meals. ขนม are the classic ของกินเล่น.
| I bought snacks to nibble on at home. (female speaker) | ฉัน ซื้อ ขนม มา กินเล่น ที่ บ้าน ค่ะ |
You already know เดินเล่น from the previous lesson — same pattern, and Thai keeps it productive: you will meet more V + เล่น pairs as you read and listen.
