From เต็ม to เต็มไปด้วย
เต็ม says something is full: แก้วเต็ม — the glass is full. To say what it is full OF, Thai uses the fixed chunk เต็มไปด้วย:
A เต็มไปด้วย B — A is full of B
| The market is full of people. | ตลาด เต็มไปด้วย ผู้คน |
Literal and figurative
It works for real spaces and for abstract ones alike:
| literal | figurative |
|---|---|
| ชายหาด เต็มไปด้วย นักท่องเที่ยว — a beach full of tourists | ชีวิต เต็มไปด้วย ปัญหา — a life full of problems |
| สวน เต็มไปด้วย ดอกไม้ — a garden full of flowers | ใจ เต็มไปด้วย ความสุข — a heart full of happiness |
| His life is full of problems. | ชีวิต ของ เขา เต็มไปด้วย ปัญหา |
Treat it as one word — Thai writes and says it as a unit, and it never splits. In written Thai you will meet it constantly; in speech it adds a slightly vivid, storytelling tone.
