Nationalities and Origins
In Thai, you can form nouns describing specific demographic groups by attaching the prefix ชาว (people of / residents of) to a noun. When combined with a country or origin, it refers to the citizens or people of that place.
For people from other countries in general, attach the prefix to ต่างชาติ (foreign nation) to form ชาวต่างชาติ (foreigners).
Communities and Domains
You can also attach this prefix to specific types of settlements or even abstract domains. For instance, combining it with บ้าน (house/village) creates ชาวบ้าน (villagers or everyday locals).
In modern contexts, combining it with the internet (เน็ต) gives us ชาวเน็ต (netizens)—the people of the online world.
Geographical Dwellers
When added to geographical features, ชาว describes the people who inhabit those environments. This includes ชาวเขา (hill tribe people, from เขา meaning mountain), ชาวเมือง (city dwellers, from เมือง meaning city), and ชาวเกาะ (islanders, from เกาะ meaning island).
On a planetary scale, referring to the Earth (โลก) creates ชาวโลก (people of the world, or earthlings).
Agricultural Occupations
Because life in Thailand has historically been deeply tied to agriculture, ชาว is also used to form essential occupational titles based on the type of land a person works. A rice field (นา) gives us ชาวนา (rice farmers).
Meanwhile, those who cultivate orchards or plantations (สวน) are called ชาวสวน (orchard farmers).
