By This Time: ป่านนี้... คง...
When you want to guess what has likely happened by a certain point in time, use the deductive frame ป่านนี้... (by this time... [subject] must have... / by now... [subject] probably...).
Place ป่านนี้ at the start of the sentence, and คง immediately before the verb or adjective. Because you are usually deducing that an action has already finished or a state has already changed by this time, it is very common to complete the sentence with แล้ว (already).
| By this time, the child must have accidentally fallen asleep in the living room. |
| By this time, the side dish on the table must have spoiled. |
| By this time, she must have already put the duvet in the wardrobe. |
Ongoing Expectations
If you expect that a daily routine or action is currently in progress at this very moment, pair the ป่านนี้... คง... frame with the continuous markers กำลัง (in the process of) and/or อยู่ (currently).
| By this time, the washing machine must be washing the clothes. |
| He went into the bathroom a long time ago; by this time, he must be taking a shower. |
Setting the Context
Often, you will state an observation first—such as noticing the weather, the time of day, or how quiet the house is—before drawing your conclusion.
To do this, simply state the fact or context first, followed directly by your ป่านนี้... คง... deduction in the second clause:
| It is evening, by this time the market must be completely closed. |
| The sun is very strong today, by this time the clothes must have completely dried. |
| The house is very quiet; by this time, the children must have all fallen asleep. |
