Thai Builds Words Like Sentences
Last lesson you saw นัก- and ช่าง- make people-words. Thai builds THING-words the same way: put two words together, head first, modifier after.
| compound | parts | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ห้องเรียน | room + study | classroom |
| ห้องน้ำ | room + water | bathroom |
| ร้านอาหาร | shop + food | restaurant |
| การบ้าน | work + house | homework |
You have been using compounds all along — now you can READ them. The head comes first: ห้องเรียน is a kind of ห้อง, not a kind of เรียน.
| Our classroom is on the second floor. (female speaker) | ห้องเรียน ของ เรา อยู่ ชั้น สอง ค่ะ |
Collectives
Some compounds bundle a pair of near-synonyms into a collective: เสื้อผ้า (shirt + cloth) is clothes in general. ถุงเท้า (bag + foot) — socks — shows how literal Thai can be.
| I wash clothes every day. (female speaker) | ฉัน ซัก เสื้อผ้า ทุกวัน ค่ะ |
