Training and Endurance
When discussing athletics and physical training, you will often describe an athlete's stamina and drive. Use words like อึด (enduring) and เร่ง (to accelerate) to describe pushing physical limits.
| He has great stamina, so he speeds up. | เขา อึด มาก ก็เลย เร่ง ครับ |
The ultimate goal for a แชมป์ (champion) is often to ทะลุ (break through) their limits in order to คว้า (grab) a prize or medal.
| The champion wants to break through the limit and grab the gold medal. | แชมป์ อยาก ทะลุ ขีดจำกัด และ คว้า เหรียญ ทอง ค่ะ |
Clearing Obstacles
To express successfully getting completely past a physical boundary, obstacle, or marker, use the resultative serial verb พ้น (to clear / to get past). Place it directly after the main action verb or its object.
| The champion jumps clear of the fence. | แชมป์ กระโดด พ้น รั้ว ครับ |
You can also use this structure to describe moving objects past a boundary.
| I have already dragged the treadmill past the door. | ผม ลาก ลู่วิ่ง พ้น ประตู แล้ว ครับ |
Just as it applies to physical barriers, พ้น can be used to express getting completely clear of a hazard or threat.
| They have already escaped the danger. | พวกเขา หนี พ้น อันตราย แล้ว ค่ะ |
The Finish Line
In racing events, the ultimate boundary is the เส้นชัย (finish line). Failing to clear obstacles along the way means a competitor might get ตกรอบ (eliminated).
| I have already run past the marathon finish line. | ฉัน วิ่ง พ้น เส้นชัย มาราธอน แล้ว ค่ะ |
| He must jump clear of the fence, or else he will get eliminated. | เขา ต้อง กระโดด พ้น รั้ว หรือไม่ก็ ตกรอบ ครับ |
