Counting Slices and Portions
To count pieces, fragments, slices, and portions of food (such as pastries, cookies, and pizza), Thai uses the classifier ชิ้น.
Following the standard counting pattern, the structure is Noun + Number + Classifier.
When a baked good has a specific flavor or filling, such as butter (เนย) or cheese (ชีส), the flavor acts as a modifier. Place it directly after the main noun, before the number: Noun + Flavor + Number + Classifier.
Describing and Pointing Out Pieces
Adjectives describing the food, such as soft (นิ่ม), also follow the noun and come before the number and classifier.
When pointing out specific pieces with demonstratives like "this" or "these", remember that the demonstrative goes at the very end of the entire phrase: Noun + Number + Classifier + Demonstrative.
Asking "How Many"
To ask how many pieces or slices there are, replace the number with the question word กี่. The structure becomes Noun + กี่ + Classifier.
