Classifying Categories, Kinds, and Styles
When counting or specifying nouns in Thai, you use the standard classifier structure: [Noun] + [Number] + [Classifier].
When discussing broad concepts like automotive technologies, fuel, or engine specifications, you will frequently use classifiers that group things by their category, kind, or design. The three most common are:
- ประเภท (category or broad classification)
- ชนิด (kind or specific functional type)
- แบบ (style, model, or design)
Here is how you use ประเภท to count broad categories of innovations and vehicles:
| We have two categories of innovations. | เรา มี นวัตกรรม สอง ประเภท ค่ะ |
| Our company produces two types of cars, namely electric and hybrid. | บริษัท ของ เรา ผลิต รถยนต์ สอง ประเภท คือ ไฟฟ้า และ ไฮบริด ครับ |
Kinds and Models: ชนิด and แบบ
ชนิด is often used to classify specific functional kinds of materials or systems, such as fuel.
| The engine of this car uses two kinds of fuel. | เครื่องยนต์ ของ รถยนต์ คัน นี้ ใช้ เชื้อเพลิง สอง ชนิด ค่ะ |
แบบ refers more to the design, style, or specific model of a product or system.
| He wants to buy one model of hybrid car. | เขา ต้องการ ซื้อ รถยนต์ ไฮบริด หนึ่ง แบบ ครับ |
| Electric cars have two models of starting systems. | รถยนต์ ไฟฟ้า มี ระบบ สตาร์ท สอง แบบ ครับ |
Specifying Categories with Demonstratives
Just like with standard object classifiers, you can combine category classifiers with demonstrative words like นี้ (this/these) or นั้น (that/those).
To specify exactly which categories you mean, add the demonstrative at the very end of the phrase. The structure becomes: [Noun] + [Number] + [Classifier] + นี้/นั้น.
| These three kinds of engines reduce pollution and increase efficiency. | เครื่องยนต์ สาม ชนิด นี้ ลด มลพิษ และ เพิ่ม ประสิทธิภาพ ค่ะ |
