The Locative Verb อยู่
Unlike English, Thai uses a specific verb to express that a person or object is located somewhere: อยู่.
Asking "Where?"
To ask where something is, place ที่ไหน (where) directly after the verb อยู่. The structure is simply Subject + อยู่ + ที่ไหน.
| Where is the table? | โต๊ะ อยู่ ที่ไหน ครับ |
| Where is the bathroom? | ห้องน้ำ อยู่ ที่ไหน ครับ |
Prepositions of Placement
To state exactly where an object is, use prepositions like บน (on), ใต้ (under), ใน (in), or ใกล้ (near) immediately before the location noun. The structure becomes Subject + อยู่ + Preposition + Location.
| The book is on the table. | หนังสือ อยู่ บน โต๊ะ ค่ะ |
| The chair is under the table. | เก้าอี้ อยู่ ใต้ โต๊ะ ครับ |
Combining Possession and Location
To specify who owns an object before saying where it is, add ของ (of / belonging to) after the noun.
| My bed is in the bedroom. | เตียง ของ ฉัน อยู่ ใน ห้องนอน ค่ะ |
| My dog is under the sofa. | หมา ของ ผม อยู่ ใต้ โซฟา ครับ |
Negating Location
To say someone or something is not in a certain place, add the negation word ไม่ directly before the verb อยู่.
| I am not at home tomorrow. | พรุ่งนี้ ผม ไม่ อยู่ บ้าน ครับ |
