The Prefix นัก- (The Practitioner)
In Thai, you can turn a regular verb or noun into a specialized profession or type of person by adding a prefix.
The prefix นัก- is used for intellectual, artistic, or general professions, as well as people known for a specific habit. Place นัก- directly in front of the base verb or noun. For example, adding it to the verb เขียน (to write) creates the word for "writer." Adding it to the noun ธุรกิจ (business) gives you "businessperson."
You will also see this prefix used for people who engage in a specific activity, such as adding it to ท่องเที่ยว (to tour/travel) to mean "tourist."
The Prefix ช่าง- (The Artisan and Mechanic)
For skilled manual trades, technicians, and artisans, Thai uses the prefix ช่าง-.
This prefix is typically attached to the noun representing the material, tool, or system the person works with. For instance, placing ช่าง- before ไม้ (wood) gives you "carpenter," and placing it before ไฟ (electricity) creates "electrician."
It can also combine with nouns related to the end product of the craft, such as ภาพ (picture/image) to mean "photographer."
