When discussing cinema, literature, or debates in Thai, you will need to count and specify the films or topics you are talking about. To do this, Thai uses the abstract noun classifier เรื่อง.
Counting Movies and Issues
In Thai, classifiers are required whenever you count a noun. For movies (หนัง or the more formal ภาพยนตร์), stories, and abstract topics like issues (ประเด็น), use the classifier เรื่อง.
Pattern: [Noun] + [Number] + เรื่อง
| I watched two action films. | ผม ดู หนัง แอ็กชัน สอง เรื่อง ครับ |
| I have five action films to recommend. | ผม มี หนัง แอ็กชัน ห้า เรื่อง มา แนะนำ ครับ |
Specifying "This", "That", and "Some"
To point out a specific movie or refer to a general group of them, you will use เรื่อง alongside demonstratives or quantifiers.
For "this" or "that", the classifier goes before the demonstrative word: Pattern: [Noun] + เรื่อง + นี้ / นั้น
For "some", the word บาง is placed immediately before the classifier: Pattern: [Noun] + บาง + เรื่อง
| Some animation films are very boring. | หนัง แอนิเมชัน บาง เรื่อง น่าเบื่อ มาก ค่ะ |
Notice how the next example uses เรื่อง twice—first to specify "this drama film", and again to count "three issues":
| This drama film has three interesting issues. | หนัง ดราม่า เรื่อง นี้ มี ประเด็น น่าสนใจ สาม เรื่อง ครับ |
Critiquing the Plot
Once you have established which movie you are talking about, you can debate its merits. Use vocabulary like พล็อต (plot) and หักมุม (plot twist) to discuss the storyline. You can then express whether the writing was สมเหตุสมผล (logical) or น่าเบื่อ (boring).
| The plot of this movie is not logical at all. | พล็อต ของ หนัง เรื่อง นี้ ไม่ สมเหตุสมผล เลย ครับ |
| This animation film has a very logical plot twist. | ภาพยนตร์ แอนิเมชัน เรื่อง นี้ มี พล็อต หักมุม ที่ สมเหตุสมผล มาก ครับ |
| The plot twist of this movie is an important issue. | พล็อต หักมุม ของ หนัง เรื่อง นี้ เป็น ประเด็น สำคัญ ค่ะ |
