Breakdown of Säkerhetsvakten gick beslutsamt mot nödutgången omedelbart.

Questions & Answers about Säkerhetsvakten gick beslutsamt mot nödutgången omedelbart.

Why are the adverbs and phrases ordered as beslutsamt mot nödutgången omedelbart?

This perfectly demonstrates the Swedish Sätt-Rum-Tid (Manner-Place-Time) rule for the end of a sentence. First comes how the action was done (Manner: beslutsamt), then where or in what direction (Place: mot nödutgången), and finally when (Time: omedelbart).

Why does beslutsamt have a -t at the end?

To turn the adjective beslutsam (resolute) into an adverb of manner (resolutely), you add a -t. This makes it look exactly like the neuter form (the ett-word form) of the adjective, which is the standard way to build manner adverbs in Swedish.

Could I put omedelbart at the start of the sentence to emphasize the urgency?

Yes, but you must remember the V2 rule where the verb must be in the second position. If you start with Omedelbart, the verb gick must come immediately after it: Omedelbart gick säkerhetsvakten beslutsamt mot nödutgången. The manner and place phrases keep their relative order at the end.

What is the -s- doing in the middle of Säkerhetsvakten?

It is a linking letter joining säkerhet (security) and vakten (the guard). In Swedish, when the first word of a compound noun ends in certain suffixes like -het, an -s- is almost always added to connect it smoothly to the next word.
